Green Acres is the place to be
Farm livin' is the life for me
Land spreadin' out so far and wide
Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside

New York is where I'd rather stay
I get allergic smelling hay
I just adore a penthouse view
Darling I love you but give me Park Avenue

The chores, the stores
Fresh air, Times Square

You are my wife
Good bye city life
Green Acres we are there

We have a big amish community in Wadena where the tornado was, and Hutterites up north, but then they have them all over north of us in canada too, so hard to say if they are going north or coming south.

What drives the amish here and there is land prices.

They have lived around here for many many years.

The really unfortunate thing, to me, is how romanticized they are by the media. I had friends that escaped their Amish families and were considered dead by their parents. Parents that had physically beat them, used them for child labour and would have never sent them to school if they could have avoided it.

Until just recently they were only required to be educated through the 8th grade here in Iowa. Very few children were able to go further. Fortunately Iowa changed that in the last few years.

Another tragic part of the Amish lifestyle is inbreeding and the physical problems that creates.

It is not the sweet and innocent life most people believe it is.

And yeahhhhhh, forget any idea of gender equality!

Well...the same thing or some variant of it can be said of many similar collections of culture-based "groups". There is a small group of Amish near my home here in MA, and they are well regarded in our community. Their kids attended public school and my son befriended a few of them some years ago. They seemed ok to me.... the parents were at graduation and mingled and did all the things parents do at such events.

And I have to say....they do make great furniture.....no...really....stereotypes and Amish Heaters aside....the store they have sells beautifully made furniture. You can stop by after you order the piece you want, and over the time he is building it, you can visit and watch it come together.

The shame of it is that the Amish will never find a place they can be themselves. Where they can live their life as they see fit.

One time out at the farm we went to an Amish family's house because these flowers were opening up, some kind of wierd flowers but it only happens once a year. It's not like they considered it a holiday, but a bit of an event, as friends we were invited. So they invited us. They were among the most friendly people I ever met. For purposes of anonymity the F family had owned the farm for generations, perhaps more than I know. Well there was F road and these Amish either leased or bought some land and built houses, cabins in some cases. This was long ago. I don't know exactly who did it but someone built F road. They got a road named after them !

But that doesn't really matter because the maintainence on a dirt road is very little. There was still irrigation. In this state if you live out in the stix you need to basically build a bridge across the ditch to have a driveway. I am sure it is the same elsewhere.

The Amish are separartists, they want no part of modern society, so now that you bring it up, why aren't they labelled s a hate group like the Odinists ?

They are here in the valley.   They are easy to live near.

Those Amish have some money.

They also keep it in their own community.

They are not separatists.

Look at all the places you can buy Amish-made goods, especially furniture.

Look in your grocery store and you're likely to find Amish cheese and other products.

How often have you seen van loads of Amish carpenters being driven to new home construction sites?

They just have certain beliefs about modern ways.

I've always heard the Amish and Mennonite were very different.

That they have many of the same customs but Mennonites are far more liberal in what they allow.

I agree with this. Incest victims are expected to forgive their abusers if the abuser repents in church, then goes right back at it on Monday.

I think it was Dateline that produced a show I saw on the Amish. They featured a young woman that was shunned for speaking up about her brother. She was told she must not have tried hard enough to get away, in spite of brother dearest taking her bedroom door off the hinges to get at her. She was trying to get custody of a younger sister to take her out of the family home.

They also featured a man who left the Amish. He was beaten as a child and left his community. He won custody of his children in court and was sad for his wife because he knew she would be shunned once he got them.

ETA: I agree the idealized version of the Amish is quite pastoral and lovely, but they don't have any more of an ideal society than anyone else. I believe that the Amish like every other religion on the planet have good and bad apples.
