You missed the big one in New England: King Richard's Faire.
Jousting upon horses aplenty and no motor bikes.
This will be it's 28th year and is held on 80 acres.

It doesn't bother me that you based your opinion upon an experience that was obviously a "flawed study".

However, within the critique of your experience, you make all sorts of disparaging remarks about other people in your 'bit of wit'. Those remarks are slanted in a way that makes you out to be "better than".

Really, in my opinion, there is no other word to describe that but sad.

Please go resume your munching on tinfoil as is your wont.

Status: offline 		Sneering at nerds is so high school.  And a lot of those high school nerds you picked on and called "losers" are laughing all the way to the bank now, as they are smarter and more successful than you as adults.

The last time you pulled this in Ask A Mistress, it didn't go over well.  It's not going over well here either, and not just with people who enjoy medieval recreation as a hobby and also have multiple degrees and good jobs.  Speaking of poor social skills, how well is it working for you to keep posting this sort of thing?  Are you getting lambasted and your error of stereotyping pointed out every time?  I thought so. 

You can find the bottom of the barrel dysfunctional and obsessed people with no life in just about any crowd.   If those are the friends you're picking or the only people you gravitate towards, then I'd say you should be looking in a mirror for the source of the problem rather than stereotyping an entire subculture.

My neighbors just got back from one yesterday. She was so hoarse you could barely hear her. I'm told they had a blast. Normally he does the revolutionary war reenactment thing but I guess this was a bit different. From what I hear she was heckling saber throwers. In short they had a blast.

An alternate reality ? Yup, I woud have to agree. No house, internet, leave the phone in the car nd just have a good time. I think this was her first time because they met not too long ago, but she seemed so enthusiastic about it I am thinking of inviting myself to the next one. We'll see how that goes.

I'll read this whole thing later, but my time on the internet is a bit limited because my router went south. So now we kinda have a schedule. Not to worry things could be worse. But really I am thinking of going at least once.

Status: offline 		One thing, perhaps the most important thing I learned with those that were attracted to the times gone by, was the fact that people did not have to be the austere trades that they are in real life. People are what they are before the trades society seems to make people become proficient at, as if it is not people society is interested in but what they can do for others and that at cheapest price.

The Renn faire/SCA/battle re-enactment scene is where people are forced to be people, people first and thereafter what they may be in scene or out. One thing that came across to me strongly in an age where everything is paid with promissory notes was the situation of trade, two people agreeing what they do was worth what, and with that a comfortable agreement based upon need and supply, what we can do for each other, something I believe has been lost with the introduction of the promissory note, which government released bonds are and somewhere in that where they make upon an agreement between two people.

Now for me trade is a thing worth pursuing, as I sit here eating my latest  cupboard raid concotion, rice and curried prunes all in, I would gladly trade my skills for a normal meal to eat. My problem is I don't eat regularly, so when I do, it is what can be done with whatever I have available. A few tankards of real ale stimulates an appetite and it is surprising what one may eat when the beer is in.

I don't understand why *anyone* would want to "celebrate" the Dark Ages! People lived like animals in mud hovels and lived a short, brutish life! Many times they starved to death. They'd have thanked God for a fried dough and hot dog stand!
Fourty years of age was an "old" man or woman in those days!
"Kings" and "Knights" wearn't your "friends" they could kill you just for looking at them wrong!
Oh sure, if I had a time machine I'd want to go back to the dark fucking ages so I could eat mud pies and die at 26 of some stupid disease that we have anti-biotics for now!

Do you realize that you are giving arguments that can be used against anyone that enjoys BDSM?  

Do you scene?  Do you attend play parties?  Do you enjoy yourself?   Whats the difference?  Your play acting, maybe for a crowd of two, instead of 100, but still...it's a charade.  

When you make comments such as your previous post, basically saying anyone who enjoys recreating a time of life that had it's pitfalls....is one taco short of a full plate...you are also throwing stones at those who dress in attire during a scene, handcuffed in cuffs with an escape option, pretending to be animals, begging to be caged..etc.  

Just as you paint a picture about people who enjoy faires, claiming we don't understand the reality of the time we are recreating....you do understand that when people were locked in a cell, it wasn't a scene, it was reality?  When prisoners were beaten, starved and tortured, there were no safe words.  

You don't like faires, I get it.  Not everyone does, my husband being one of those against men in skirts, no matter how many times I say it's a kilt. 
Before you insinuate that anyone who attempts to recreate a period where life was harsh and short lived is off their rocker, remember...there could be someone who is looking in your window and thinking the same thing :)

No, my observation was that you made rude and derogatory comments about the people in attendance and seemed to enjoy doing that and that your tone was that of superiority.

Aside from the people, your other complaints were that there were no horses, nor metal swords at the faire you went to...to which I offered you a place where you could view that if you so desired.

Status: offline 		I never dress up to go to ren fairs, and a lot of people have interacted with me and been quite friendly, So I am sorry to hear people in your camps, or who ever was making that statement was so unfriendly as to not speak to someone just cause they were not dressed in ren fair garb.

The Dark Ages? Ok, obviously history is not your strong suit.
That explains quite a bit.
Your comments are roughly the equivalent of eating at Dennys, then using the experience to declare that the Four Seasons sucks without having ever been there. I've worked many different Ren events, from hastily thrown together single weekends run by those without a clue (although I have yet to see a hot dog stand, and the only place I have seen motorcycle 'jousting' was in the cult classic movie "Knightriders") to professionally run major events that go for 8 weekends a season every year and have done so for nearly 30 years.

Personally, I couldn't give a shit less if you have no interest in such things. I'm quite sure that you have interests that many here would think are a complete waste of time as well. Coming to this thread to slam both the events and the people that attend/ work them is another matter, especially when your thoughts are posted in such an ignorant and superior manner, and are coming from little to no experience.

That said, I am happy provide a couple of links to video of the jousters I used to work with. Please note that the horses are in no way mechanical, the hits are real, the swords are metal and the lances used are solid, uncut closet rods which give one hell of an impact when the horses are going at a full run.

And to ciaphascain: I worked the western faire circuit for 12 years, starting with the year I graduated high school. During those years, I also- held my first full time job while carrying a full load at a community college, transferred to a 4 year uni and earned my Bachelor's degree, ran a small business for a number of years, and got married (still working full time). Fellow 'Rennies' included folks from just about every profession you can imagine. It is a bit disconcerting to walk backstage and find 2 guys dressed as 15th century German mercenaries discussing the legal implications of a recent Supreme Court decision, but it happened more than once.

Finally, to the OP: There are few places where one can walk their nearly naked slave, in chains, through a crowd of 100,000 people (or even 'auction' their slave in public) with little reaction beyond, "Wow, that's cool!"... or openly wear floggers, cuffs, or other toys without notice. Those who have worked a major faire know that what goes on after hours is one huge party, where it takes a lot to shock anyone. What's not to love about that?

This is how rumours get started.   I never said we couldn't interact with people not dressed in garb at faires....it was at SCA.  Two different animals :)

Ren faire is ALL about interaction and performance.   Though I will say I may have painted an untrue picture of SCA.  Some of the best tent hopping and drum circles were enjoyed at SCA events after the sun went down!  

Hope that clears up your concerns :)
