Let me get this straight- the seniors are angry at the Medicare cuts of Obamacare, so they are going to vote for the party that wants to cut and privatize Medicare entirely?

Yeah I really have to question the logic of anyone who thinks the GOP is going to win in '12 because of the "cut off your nose to spite your face" voting bloc.

Yup.

The over 55 crowd has been known to read too. And understand what they read.

Not at all. They are hacked off at having 500 million cut from medicare to fund Obama care.

Let me get this straight- the seniors are angry at the Medicare cuts of Obamacare, so they are going to vote for the party that wants to cut and privatize Medicare entirely?

Bullshit. Here is the GOP platform from 2008:

Medicare and Medicaid
Revive Medicare by rewarding quality care, promoting competition, eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse, and giving patients and providers control over treatment options. Give Medicaid recipients more health care options: "We envision a new Medicaid partnership with the states, improving public health through flexibility and innovation."

Give Medicaid recipients more health care options: "We envision a new Medicaid partnership with the states, improving public health through flexibility and innovation."

That was then, this is now:

On Social Security Ryan would reduce initial benefits for retirees by changing the benefit formula. Private accounts would be established immediately for those under age 55 that would be partially funded by payroll taxes.

Ryan would also raise the age to qualify for Medicare from 65 to 69 years and 6 months for people born in the year 2022. After the year 2021, the Medicare program as we know it would cease to exist. Instead of receiving health benefits through Medicare, those over age 65 would instead receive government vouchers worth $5,900. These vouchers would be adjusted for age and health status, which would put the average voucher at $11,000. Medicare beneficiaries would buy private health insurance with the vouchers.

These amounts are considerably less than estimated Medicare spending per enrollee in 2022, so there is a sharp cut in spending right off the bat. Furthermore, these amounts would only be indexed to half the historical rate of price inflation for medical care. This means that the real, inflation-adjusted voucher amount would fall continuously. To cover the shortfall, Medicare beneficiaries would either have to pay out of their own pockets for medical care or buy private insurance over and above what could be purchased with the Medicare vouchers.

Workers would also likely see a sharp reduction in their health benefits as well because Ryan would abolish the tax exclusion for health insurance. In other words, workers would have to treat whatever their employer pays for health insurance as if it were cash income. Workers would instead receive a new tax credit not to exceed $5,700 per family. It is not clear whether the credit amount would be indexed to inflation. This provision would constitute a significant tax increase for many workers.

In short, the core of Ryan's proposal is to implement George W. Bush's plan to privatize Social Security, which got virtually no public support even when the stock market was booming, and essentially abolish Medicare altogether while raising taxes on the health benefits of most workers. He basically assumes that the market for health insurance would somehow adjust to prevent a significant cut in the quality of health care.

Now to be sure- Paul Ryan is only one Republican, but THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS A SERIOUS BUDGET PROPOSAL- all the others are filled with the bland platitudes and empty posturing of the party platform you quoted.

So it is completely fair and accurate to say that the only Republican ideas about Medicare and Social Security are to cut them.

Yay Granny! Clip those cat food coupons now!

The party in power always loses a few seats in the midterms. Big deal. If anyone can come up with a plan for the republican's policies please be sure to pass them on the the public. All I hear is how they want to stop wasteful spending and shrink the government. Two things they absolutely do not do when in power. Anyone who thinks otherwise is naive.
All democratic voters want to see are sources and facts, not Fox Lies and tin-foil hat conspiracy theories.
If the Bush tax cuts are going to save jobs, how the hell did we lose them in the first place? Republican governance and deregulation is to blame for the stock market crash and my retirement money going out the window, not to mention pensions from major companies like United Airlines.
Spare me the "stop wasteful spending" speech until you stop sending me and my son to Iraq.

What a disgusting and uninformed response. Most likely someone who never served his country.
Signing up in the military isn't volunteering to go fight an unjust war over a lie. Hardly something to volunteer for.
I can see why you are so disliked here.

There are thousands of good reasons to join the military, including:

Answering the call to serve your country
Taking a stand against terrorism
Educational and monetary benefits that can last a lifetime
Personal satisfaction and pride
Family tradition
Honor
Devotion to duty
Learning useful new skills
Full-time employment
Job security
Personal improvement

Using us to attack a sovereign nation for the purpose of financial gain shouldn't be one, but you non-serving republicans wouldn't see that.

I must agree with Wilbeurdaddy here-

signing up for the military IS IN FACT VOLUNTEERING TO FIGHT AN UNJUST WAR OVER A LIE.

Apologies to all the mothers holding folded flags.

It won't really matter. If the republicans were to gain control of the House, Obama will veto every bill sent his way.

Nonsense. He will do the same thing Clinton had to do...move toward the center. The difference is that so much of Obama's support will be alienated by a move to the center that it still cant save him for 2012.

Yea Clinton moved to the right by raising taxes and closing down the govt. in putting down a house putsch from Gingrich with his 'contract on America.'

Clinton got both parties to become much more fiscally conservative. Even George Will wrote at the time that it took a liberal dem to work with a rep senate to enact an agenda from the right that neither Bush I or Reagan managed to get done.

All of these surveys are premature and mean almost nothing with 4 mos. to go.

That premise being that he,like you, does not know what he is talking about and only opens his mouth to change feet.
