Great post Jen,

I remember when the plants started closing in the 80s.
I don't live in Detroit, but I just could not believe that people didn't fully realize what was happening to them.
People protested a little, but not enough was done then.
I remember thinking as they started closing down plant after plant, "Where are all those people going to work?"

It was like watching something tragic happen, and no one see's it until years later.
People all over the US should have rose up and raised hell back THEN.
We all sat back and let this shit happen, like the dummies we were.

Now, here we are, lol, 25 years later, shaking our heads and trying to figure out how to get the jobs back.

Now, we have little pockets sprinkled all over the US, that are very similar to Detroit, and we are still sitting around "watching it go down".

What killed Detroit, was big business/corporations pulling out: that is what can bring it back.

I am not even sure what to say any more, at some point people that don't raise up and take it to the streets big time, deserve what happens to them.

The only thing sadder than Detroit, is the fact America didn't even learn from it.
Flash forward to NOW.
People that don't learn from the past, are doomed to keep repeating it.
....................................America 2010..................................................

Where or where have all the jobs gone? {Sing this to the tune "Where have all the flowers gone?"}

http://www.opednews.com/sherry022404_jobs.htm

What killed Detroit is that no one was willing to buy their product any longer.

Thank God Detroit bit the dust or else we would still be driving pieces of shit that would rust out and fall apart around you.

Detroit killed Detroit. America killed Detroit. Capitalism killed Detroit.

By the way. Detroit owes me $430.00 for a fishing rod and reel that is now laying at the bottom of Lake St Clair. It was dropped by a drunk engineer that works at Chrysler.

I will never buy another American car till Detroit compensates me for my loss.

But but but the stimulus package saved the auto industry, including Ford that got no stimulus money. I know its true, Obama said so this morning.

Wilbur, please provide the quote where Obama said that Ford was saved by the stimulus money.

I know it's false, because you typed it out.

You have been caught spreading falsehoods and I imagine that this instance is no different. Your posts make you out to be a liar.

You are rarely honest or correct.

Please quote this as wilbur has me on block...wilbur hates to be confronted with his own lies.

This is what Obama said this morning while speaking at a Ford plant in Chicago commenting on the fact that Ford did not need a bailout:

"That was a testament to your hard work and choices the company made," the president told the workers. "If your competitors had gone down, the suppliers you use here would've gone down, too. And the brand of American autos would've diminished."

and this:

"Some thought we should just have walked away from the American auto industry. But that's not how you build a better future and a better America," Obama said. "You don't quit, you compete... I put my money on the American worker; I place my bets on the American worker any day of the week. Because of your work and your sacrifice, the industry growing. Each of you is proving naysayers wrong."

Willbe, last week a Democratic Congressman (can't recall who) misspoke and said Ford took bailout money. It wasn't Obama who said so.

The auto industry has had nothing to do with Detroit in decades. Any fool who's been paying attention should know that. Please cite your source.

Oil prices will someday go so high it won’t matter how cheap the cost of labor is in China and then manufacturing cities like Detroit will bounce back.

Well if DG could read he would have seen that I said Ford that GOT NO STIMULUS MONEY. He's not worth the time to respond to, but you usually read a little more closely brainiac.

And the claim about suppliers simply isnt true. The strong suppliers would do just fine supplying Ford and the foreign manufacturers that buy here IMPROVING the quality of all cars, but especially the American brand.

Its an interesting contrast, while the first Black President didnt give a fuck about destroying the defense industry and hurting those suppliers (many of whom are also auto suppliers). Their survival is testimony to how FOS Obama's speech was today.

LT, I've never been like that, in my younger days if I needed something I'd save my money until I got enough.
Now, I buy "New Balance" sneakers at Sears for $20 or $30 and say CHARGE just so I can pay the credit card off.

But Pops, you moved from Mass to NH ,,,,why? Lower prices.....

LOL, DYB, I moved from Mass. to N.H. for lower *Taxes*, less crime, cheaper insurance rates, Freedom and better laws.
Massachusetts is a paradise for crooked politicians! State legislators make I think in excess of $100 k per year, in N.H. they used to make $100 per year. Also in N.H. they have "Town Meeting" style govt. If you want something changed you simply show up at your local Town or City hall and have your say and they vote on it. Very Norman Rockwell-esque.
Mass always seems to have new Taxes of some kind or now as they're trying to call them, "fees."
In New Hampshire you get better roads for less money! No sales Taxes, no income Taxes.
And in Massachusetts they've managed to make some extremely restrictive firearms "regulations." Consequently the rate of home burgleries is I think 20 times the rate of N.H.'s rate! It takes an "act of congress" to get a concealed weapons permit in Mass. In N.H. you go down to the town hall or police station if they have one and fill out a form and give them $20 and in two weeks if you have a clean record you go down and pick up your permit.
In Mass. to get a job as a toll taker on the Mass Pike at $80k per year you have to "know" someone. Lot's of "relatives" on that job!
Every time I drive on that road I'd always ask them; "Who's brother-in-law are you?" "Somebody's!" was their stock answer.

What really pisses me off is that Haiti has an earthquake and in days it has billions of dollars to rebuild.

We go into an unwarranted war in Iraq and spend billions of dollars to help them rebuild in the last 9 years.

Neither of these countries contribute or have contributed directly to the success of the U.S. as a nation or economic entity.

But...

Detroit, the largest contributor of manpower and manufacturing during World War II suffers huge losses and begins to deteriorate in the 60's and nothing is done in almost 50 years to save it.

THAT'S FUCKED UP!

boi

Well said BoiJen!
Our govt. has all kinds of ways of funneling our Tax Dollars to foreign countries other than through "foreign aid."
They help everyone but our own people it seems! Hopefully a lot of the congressmen and senators who believe in "globalism" will be LEAVING in November!
I'd like to see some kind of "symposium" or whatever in D.C. about what our country can do to "Help Detroit!"
It REALLY pissed me off when during the campaign John McCain said to the people of Michigan; "Those jobs aren't comming back!"
Hopefully HE's not "comming back" after November! How many "free-trade" deals did that pos vote for?

Please try again....Show me the source that you utilized in determining that the President said the following....

...the stimulus package saved the auto industry, including Ford that got no stimulus money. I know its true, Obama said so this morning.

Please find the source where Obama said ..."the stimulus package saved the auto industry, including Ford that got no stimulus money."

Your posts continually make you out to be a liar. I am pretty sure since you won't or can't find the source that you are lying once again.

please find the source of your post. And put it up so we all can see if you were once again lying to promote your twisted ideology.

We are no longer allowed to make personal attacks. I wish there was a way to do away with posters like yourself that seem incapable of understanding the difference between being accurate and spreading outright lies.

What would you call a person that continually posts in a dishonest manner?

I know what I would call them.

I'm all for diverting foreign aid from countries that provide no strategic advantage to us and rebuilding American cities and industries instead of theirs.

Ah, an allusion to the nation building that I talked of in my OP.

willbe, while I don't disagree with you (here at least), the question is, how will the spent money get RESULTS?  We rebuilt Japan with a vengeance, but I haven't seen or heard of any other cases where US nation building actually worked.  The American Indians have figured out how to capitalize on their own resources - minerals and gambling - rather than rebuild with the US' help.  Vietnam is rebuilding without our help.  So how do we rebuild Detroit?

Detroit's problems cannot be solved with only a checkbook, although it could be a place to start.
