MissAsylum -> Drink Help! (8/3/2010 5:54:09 PM)

so i am turning 21 (FINALLY) on the 28th this month. i plan on entertaining from home since i have tons of space. one liquor i intend on having is vodka. since i am a wine drinker, having it with most meals for the last year or so, i haven't the foggiest idea about any other drink. the only think i really know is don't serve vodka at room-tempurature. since i will have quite a few people there who drink like fishes(but know nothing about alcohol...go figure), is there a certain vodka that tastes pretty good but isn't super expensive so that i can buy in bulk so to speak? also if there are some fairly easy and simple mixed drinks? it doesnt have to include vodka, but if it doesn't, can you recommend a brand?

I can't relate to the cost of vodka these days as I haven't been in the market but back in the day, I liked the flavored vodkas, such as Absolut. They added just a bit more flavor to some of the cocktails my bartender friends were always trying out.

Jello shots! I think you just replace the water content with vodka. Let me look that up real quick..

Elisabella -> RE: Drink Help! (8/3/2010 5:56:56 PM)

Grey Goose.

This is one of my favorite drinks. When they say 'lime juice' they mean Rose's sweet lime juice if you're making them at home, not just regular lime juice.

Jello Shots
[image]http://www.drinkstreet.com/pics/page/crnr.gif[/image]

   6 ounces Jello (large package)
   16 ounces Water (boiling)
   6 ounces Water (cold)
   10 ounces Vodka

Mix the jello mix with the boiling water until the powder is fully dissolved and add the cold water and alcohol. Pour the cooling mixture into either shot glasses or paper cups. Shot glasses are more attractive, but drinker can turn the paper cups inside-out to more easily eat the alcoholic jello.

I did not know they had a drinking age over there.

Ketel One

there's been tons of taste tests done for vodka which comes to the conclusion that pretty much all vodka tastes the same. It's basically tasteless and can be added to pretty much anything. The cheapest vodka is Smirnoffs I think and the easiest drink is probably just vodka and cranberry juice.

I'm not a huge fan of vodka so I usually prefer to drink Appleton rum and diet pepsi.

kallisto -> RE: Drink Help! (8/3/2010 6:03:40 PM)

I have to admit when I drink vodka, I drink the good stuff .. Grey Goose (from the freezer). But you can mix vodka with just about anything .. cranberry and a squeeze of lime juice, orange juice, grapefruit juice, tonic with a squeeze of lime. Friends of my young adult kids drink it with sprite and Red Bull. When I think of vodka, I think of drinks that aren't "heavy". I had a "grape" martini not too long ago .. vodka, white grape juice, frozen grapes for ice .. I think there was something else in it, but I can't tell you what it was. [8D]

As a bartender *part time* for 16 years, the cheapest vodka is not Smirnoff, at least not here, it is Popov or 5 o'clock, both repulsive. Smirnoff is pretty good for a mid range vodka, but for something smooth and easy, Ketel One, Grey Goose, Level or Ciroc (made with grapes) are all awesome. Also Belvedere is pretty good as well.

I like Stolichnaya. I keep it in the freezer, and drink it straight. It pours slightly syrupy, and it's very smooth.

DomKen -> RE: Drink Help! (8/3/2010 6:21:02 PM)

I prefer Grey Goose when I drink vodka but Smirnoff's is fine for mixing.

Mixed drinks can be easy
equal parts Vodka and OJ over ice(screwdriver) is a good easy one.
rum and pineapple juice is one that has become popular with some ladies I know (don't ask me why)

For a good cocktail I always recommend a martini (a real martini not some of the weird crap being called martini's)
Chill a cocktail glass (stem ware)
pour some ice into a shaker
pour a half ounce of dry vermouth over the ice
swirl the shaker for a few seconds
strain off any vermouth that will pour out (don't try and get all of it)
add 2 1/2 ounces of good gin (real martinis are always made with gin)
stir a few times (shaking a martini chills it too cold to taste the gin properly)
put a green olive into the glass
strain the contents of the shaker into the glass

It being summer if you prefer wine over hard liquor sangria is easy to make and is very tasty even with reasonably cheap wine.

oh god. i just want my white wine now *sucks thumb*. but anyways, i'm liking what i'm hearing so far- except the jello shots. i got drunk off my ass last year from those alone(no idea there was vodka in them) 20 something shots in 20 minutes=havoc and mayhem.
