If you're bored and have more time than money you can buy the crappiest $2 vodka you can find and pour it through a britta filter 4 or 5 times and most people would say it was Grey Goose. The difference between good vodka and bad vodka is how many times it is filtered.

I like Cosmopolitans which is one of the better vodka drinks for parties IMO because you can make it by the pitcher. And no, it is not just vodka & cranberry juice.

The recipe is 2:1:1:1 Vodka:Triple Sec*:Lime Juice**:Cranberry Juice***

If you are going to make a pitcher, start with cold liquor and fill the pitcher 1/4 full with ice.
If individual drinks, shaking over ice will add enough water to finish the recipe.

And if you REALLY want to get fancy, get some cherry Torani syrup and put it around the rim of the Cosmo glasses (think margarita) and then dust with fine grain sugar (not powdered sugar).

*Cointreau or Grand Marnier are upscale substitutions
**not Rose's lime juice, real lime juice preferably fresh squeezed.
***not cranberry juice cocktail, but plain cranberry juice.

It won't be quite the same but you can make a cosmo with lemon juice or with limoncello

Any anjeo tequila. People may argue brands, but I have never been disappointed in an anjeo.

If you use vodka for mix drinks, the quality of the vodka doesn't matter all that much because the juice or soda people use will overpower the taste, think about it this way, if you use a high quality red wine or a cheaper red wine for a spritzer with lemonade, you'll have a hard time telling the grapes or the vintage.
Personally I always throw a bit of a fit if I offer some self appointed whisky connoisseur one of the fine vintage single malts (I do have a thing for peaty Islay's) and they attempt to put freaking ice cubes and coke in it, if they want that they can have some yucky Jack Daniels where coke can only improve the taste...

Finally a thread where I am an expert.   I  was a bartender in college for three years and then managed a Wine & Spirits store for about 4 years of grad school.   To an extent  quality of the vodka does not matter that much on mixed drinks.  The real low shelf stuff will taste bad no matter what you put in it.  The real high end is kind of a waste unless you are having traditional martinis.  I would stick to mid shelf like Smirnoff ( or Svedka if they have it where you are,  same price point but better).  That way it will taste ok in most drinks, be good enough if people get pretty drunk and move on to shots, and not kill your wallet.  Rum is another one you can get away with not breaking the bank.  On tequila, whiskey, and gin you get what you pay for mostly because they have to be aged to not taste like paint thinner.

I've seen people lose a hell lot of money for trying to tell what brand of drink was used in mixed drinks or cocktails, unless you go really cheap and nasty it doesn't matter all that much and is more a snob thing to do, most professional bar tenders will have 2 sets of bottles, one for the people who drink it neat (or with a drop of something in it) and one for the mixers/cocktails.

I'm not into tequila but with gin and tonic, you can only tell to an extend what it is when it is mixed and a decent single malt should NEVER be mixed, the only thing that should go in it is a few drops of spring water, if you want to mess around with a single malt for mixed drinks, you simply have not got enough taste or culture to even deserve a prime single malt because you're a damned barbarian without taste buds!

wpf0027 -> RE: Drink Help! (8/4/2010 8:27:41 AM)

I agree on the single malt part of your post.  I only drink scotch neat.  I think what I said about vodka is almost the same as what you just did.  Don't pick the real cheap and nasty stuff.  Barton,  Popov,  McCormicks, etc...  The bottom shelf stuff is cheap and nasty.  I can taste bottom shelf no matter what it is mixed with.  I am not a snob just refuse to drink just for the drunk.

wpf0027 -> RE: Drink Help! (8/4/2010 8:43:30 AM)

Oh also a good place to find all kinds of drink recipes is  webtender.com

LadyConstanze -> RE: Drink Help! (8/4/2010 8:44:50 AM)

Oh I didn't mean it as an attack, but I was at a party where a guy wanted to have the most expensive vodka for a mixed drink and the bar tender refused, they did a blind test with 5 different vodkas, unfortunately none of them the one the guy wanted but yet he claimed he could taste the difference, made me giggle... Especially since he lost the next 2 tests too... Unfortunately the bar tender was fired for arguing with a guest, but another company snapped him right up...

wpf0027 -> RE: Drink Help! (8/4/2010 8:51:02 AM)

Hey no problem.  I am not trying to argue either. It take that back I do want to argue one part.  I am from TN the birth place of Jack. It is not yucky. lol  The single barrel is quite good.  People that want top shelf in an apple martini are full of it.  But I can tell the difference of well vodka vs mid shelf.  It is the aftertaste.  I honestly think most of the top shelf vodkas are over kill even if you aren't mixing.

Beer is a very personal subject...:)

I'd rather be caught fucking a goat than drinking bud lite.

As a rule I prefer a hoppy bear over a malty beer. I have yet to find a more peerfectly ballanced beer than Bells Two Hearted Ale.

I have not given up looking however.

frazzle -> RE: Drink Help! (8/4/2010 10:58:08 AM)

Unless you plan to drink genuine russian vodka = 2 glasses and you dont know your name.

All commercial vodkas are identical other than price, mix with cola of which ever brand and after 2 who cares. they taste the same, and if they dont you wouldnt notice.[:D]

In his best Homer Simpson impression:
MMMMMMMMMM BEEEERRRRR!

Any way I am a beer aficionado, you could have Yeungling which is a "regional" brew from Pottsville Pa.   I am not really up on the "micro-brew" scene in Maryland, but I am sure that there are more than a few.
There is a New Hampshire micro-brew called "Blue Moon" and they make some excellent beer.  Sam Adams and their "varietals" are always a good choice.  From Out west there is a San Francisco beer "Anchor Steam", or the Sierra Nevada brand and their various brews.  travelling back east there are several I know off the top of my head there is Stoudts, from Adams Town PA, and you get the knowledge that Stoudts is owned and operated by a woman.   From Delaware there Is "Dog Fish Head" which makes several varieties of India Pale Ale (IPA) and finally from my home state of NJ there is a microbrewery named "Flying Fish" whch makes several different types of beer.

Before I overwhelm you with all the choices, if you would like I'll do the research for you on  Maryland microbreweries and send the results in an e-mail.

I second that emotion!  I'm going to start looking at your beer suggestions, though.  I love wheat beers, but I'd like to find more beers to try.  See, I was so abused as a child, my dad gave me a sip of Schlitz Malt Liquor Beer and I HATED it!

I never tasted beer again until I was in my 40s and someone convinced me to just try a Blue Moon.  I loved it!  Yummy, yummy, yummy!  I've been hot to try new beers ever since!  I LOVE beer!  All those years I could have been developing a sophisticated taste for fine beers completely wasted!  I was even in Deutschland, Home of BEER and I wouldn't have any of it.  What a fabulous opportunity wasted because I was SO BLIND!  I'm making up for lost time with it, now, though!

Jeffff -> RE: Drink Help! (8/4/2010 11:25:27 AM)

Blue Moon is made by Coors and Sam Adams is a Big ass brewery.

Dogfish Head makes some nice beers, the 90 min. IIPA is a good one.

I prefer micro brews to larger brewerys. While not all excellent many of them are making the finest beer ever.

A short list would be.

The New Belgium Brewery .
Stone Brewing.
Bells Brewery
Three Floyds.
Lagunitas.
Dogfish head.

Awesome!  I know what I'm having for dinner tonight!

There's this little place on the square called Wine2and they serve all kinds of cool beers like above, but they also have French beers and Belgium beers and any place else that makes beer.  I also really like Negro Modelo Old Sea Dog Ale, Black Dog Ale, and Red Fox.

Really Jeff,  I did not know Coors owns Blue Moon, and I knew Sam Adams has grown to a major brewer, but they still make a superior product.  Yeungling still makes an excellent brew, albeit a little more on the "malty" side.  Miss A I forgot to mention a micro brew from Downingtown PA. Victory  brewery, they make a variety call "Hop Devil Ale" which has a very high hops content.

heartcream -> RE: Drink Help! (8/4/2010 11:44:29 AM)

Canada has some cute beers. Actually I ought to say Toronto because those are the local brews I know.

Lots of places dont sell Sam Adams and folks here do like their Sam.

I prefer little micro breweries to drink from.
