Intelligent discourse = a discussion with someone clever.

poise -> RE: intellectal discourse (8/5/2010 11:10:49 AM)

Intelligent discourse = the new kink! (and it only hurts a little bit)

Or at least enough stupid people to make a grand total of a decent conversation.

The issue with intellectual discourse is that the subject being spoken about is so subjective (double use really not intended). For instance I could probably speak about weighty things such as politics, religion, economics, quantum physics, etc., with someone else and maybe not even have to lie in order for neither of us to become bored, but that might not be everyone's definition of 'intellectual'.

For others, a lengthier-than-you-imagined discussion of a film might qualify to the dicussors involved as 'intellectual'.

There are a lot of situations, and even relationships, where big thinking and talking is really not required. Best someone bring a gag just in case.

Jeff

Intellectual discourse - both their meaning and those who deliberately communicate in such a tiresomely elitist manner amounts to discussions by people of intelligence who aren't terribly smart or worldly with it.

Think the Crane brothers of tv's "Frasier" - the award winning show and dialogue actually exploits such pompous waffle exquisitly. Not naming names but we have a few posters here who can't help themselves, either.... It just proves that you don't need intelligence to communicate affectively and coherently; that for some ego-brainiacs, the opposite is more likely.

Focus.

Greetings Simone:

Intellectual:

1. relating to thought process: relating to or involving the mental processes of abstract thinking and reasoning rather than the emotions
2. intelligent and knowledgeable: having a highly developed ability to think, reason, and understand, especially in combination with wide knowledge
3. for intelligent people: intended for, appealing to, or done by intelligent people with intellectual pursuits

Discourse:

1. serious speech or piece of writing: a serious and lengthy speech or piece of writing about a topic
2. serious conversation: serious discussion about something between people or groups
3. linguistics language: language, especially the type of language used in a particular context or subject or political discourse
4. linguistics major unit of language: a unit of language, especially spoken language, that is longer than the sentence.

The term (Intellectual Discourse) is also used by linguists when investigating features of language that extend beyond sentences.

Take care!

IntellectUal Discourse.

Ahhhh the irony.

Focus50 -> RE: intellectal discourse (8/6/2010 3:09:13 AM)

I left out the fun bit....

For those who are observant enough to notice such things (ahem), when you rub someone prone to "intellectual discourse" the wrong way, you'll need to keep your dictionary handy as their default defensive mechanism is to unleash a spectacular vocabularic maelstrom that'd leave Sir Humphrey Appleby (Yes Minister / Yes Prime Minister) dumbfounded.

Not that the superior ever get so defensive as to lash out (nor so predictable as to their preferred method).... [:-]

Focus.

It's mostly about Thinkurbation.

The needless expenditure of thought solely for personal gratification.

Are you new to this site, or to the English language? These terms mean here what they mean elsewhere

It's a handy way to alleviate needless diatribe in one's inbox from people you have nothing in common with.
