There`s one moral highground we lost when bush invaded Iraq, killing or getting killed tens of thousands(that`s the low-ball figure)of non-combatents and innocent women and children.

That one was the highground that we didn`t do shit like that.

That`s history now.

Thanks fucking neo-cons.

It'll be news to the Japanese that you ever had that highground in the first place, I'm afraid. The only country in history to ever carry out a nuclear attack on another nation 'doesn't do shit like that"? Pull the other one, it's got bells on.

Brain, a LOT of people don't want it there. Fuck the right wing Christians!
And how will they get insurance after it goes up the first two or three times? (And it will!)
You just superglue the hydrants in the area. And the standpipe that goes into the building!
And they have stuff that's a lot stronger than superglue too.
Can you imagine the Firefighters?
"Fire Alarm, fire at the mosque!"
"Hey Mike, I have to take a dump, I'll be with you in a couple of minutes!"
"Take your time Charlie, I'll make a pot of coffee!"
"Damn, can you believe this shit, someone "stole the keys" to the fire truck!"
Would you want to be the insurance agent who writes a policy on that building?
Just looking at that picture I can see about five differant ways to attack that building.

"Firefighters had extreme difficulty getting water onto the fire from non-functioning hydrants and had to lay supply lines from six blocks away."

You post this yet complain elsewhere about being called a bigot. Do you ever wonder why people call you that ?

I think they're professionals and they will do their jobs and secondly if they don't do their jobs they risk being fired.

David Paterson has offered State land if they move the mosque, which is disapproved by NYers at nearly a 2:1 margin, further away from ground zero. We'll see how serious Rauf is about it being a gesture of tolerance. The greatest tolerance he could show is to not provoke the families and friends of those who died there.

Meanwhile Gary Bernsten, who condemned Bush for failing to capture/kill UBL at Tora Bora, believes the mosque is the fulfillment of UBL's desire for a trojan horse to be built in the area. Even its name is provocative.

I dont think it matters. They will have a lot of difficulty finding enough money to attract workers to cross the picket lines of the unions what will refuse to work on the building. (Just try and bypass the NY trades!)

And if it does manage to get built, I think Greg Gutfeld has a great idea to help demonstrate Rauf's tolerance....the building of an Islam friendly gay bar next to the mosque. Since alcohol is prohibited in Islam, the bar would only serve virgin drinks ...72 of them to be preciese. Several names have been proposed...my favorites...Ram-a-man and Suspicious Packages.

Carpet bombing Cambodia kinda sealed that one a while back. Etc etc.

The only moral high ground ever held was erroneously self granted.

I found the last part to be incredibly humorous to read.

That being said, there's a certain callousness in building a Mosque so close to the site of a crime supposedly committed in the name of Islam. MANY groups have come out in a public outcry against this building, not just the crazy Christian right wingers (who may just be the most vocal because they're likely the most well funded). The majority of the local community doesn't want the Mosque there. To turn down this offer of public land and essentially spit in the face of the local community isn't gonna gain any popularity points and the longer this drags out, the less respect the Mosque and it's owners are gonna get and more disrespectful they look.

boi...not really feeling good with agreeing with willbur right now.

Yeah, that cuts too wide a swath to be given berth.

Now, apparently the thought amongst American Islamists is that mosques are a house of worship,  just as a Catholic Cathedral or Jewish Synogogue or a Lutheran kaffeklatch.  They may think of it as a 911 holocaust memorial, to ponder what their religion is all about and what went wrong.

Because I gotta tell ya, Jen, I don't think in any wise that because Aileen Warnous (or however you spell it) was a penis murdering lesbian, that you need to have a stake driven thru your heart, and lesbians in whatever faction need to suck my dick in penance for the days they have left on this earth. (Even though they should).

And the same sort of idea in personal ways to the other of youse.

I'm not suggesting that we kill them.

I just think this is rather similar to any radical suggestion of erecting of Harry Truman tribute or U.S. military memorial at Hiroshima in 1955 (ten years after dropping "Little Boy" ). We'd have been called all kinds of names for it and it would never have happened.

How is this any different?

It`s religious bigotry no matter how well intentioned the protesters are.

Just how do we change the 1st Amendment to to cover a situation like this?

There`s freedom of religion if a majority approves of it?

Shortly after the Pentagon was attacked, they(under bush) built a Mosque right inside the Pentagon.

Where`s the moral outrage over this?

Is our military a bunch of Islam loving peace-nicks?

I don`t think so.

So how far away from ground zero is acceptable to the moral high-grounders? 4 city blocks? 6? Anywhere above Canal Street?

"That being said, there's a certain callousness in building a Mosque so close to the site of a crime supposedly committed in the name of Islam."

This is another way of saying that all Muslims are responsible and are to be punished for the acts of a few nutty Muslim death cultists.

We are bigger that that.

Would it have been ok for us to build a Harry Truman tribute in Hiroshima?

Women and children were killed there as well. An impact was left so large that the country will never forget it. How is this different?

Harry Truman dropped the bomb, (and the Japanese, even those who were in the military at the time, did build shrines on those spots, without regard to their religion).   Americans of the Islamist faith did not drop the towers... (fill in the ellipsis, yanno)  because that's the situation.

Different as apples and oranges, in my estimation.

Same same to me. I think they have every right to build the Mosque there. I just don't think it's right for them to do it. I wouldn't dare infringe upon that right. The community isn't infringing upon those rights. They're simply stating that the Mosque would not be welcomed. American's of all faiths get to exercise their right to expression, that includes telling (not acting otherwise) a group of individuals or an establishment that they are not welcomed in that community. The right to expression is limited in that slurs should not be used to express that unhappiness.

Make sense?

ETA I believe they built shrines to the dead, not to Harry Truman or the US. I could be mistaken in that. If so could you please direct me to where you got that particular information? I'd find it an interesting read.

no, to the dead, we agree, and I don't think they think of the mosque as a shrine to the towers either, if you catch my drift.

yeah, the rabid and base aspects of the mob mentality is not something I would be swayed with, and I hope more americans ignore it.

And I definitely got no dogs in a fight that advances religious dogmas.

Odin, the one-eyed god of confusion and war.
