By personalities,I meant CM members.

Politicians are fair game.

Nothing wrong with being partisan, either, as long as one is using facts and history and isn`t making shit up.

Conservatives who can do that always get my respect whether we agree or not.

What irritates me more than partisans? Moderates. People who claim to be moderate in an attempt to appear above partisanship irk me. It just looks wishy washy... Running to the middle based upon where the media tells us the middle is today, it seems rather the nonthinking person's way out. I think "man up, take a stand, stop fence sitting and get your own opinion"

Interesting view, but I don't base my opinions on what the media defines as anything, let alone the middle.  I'm the same as Butch, got conservative views on some things and liberal on others.  I registered as independent only once, since we have no open primaries.

Butch,

Ever looked at the Libertarian Party?   I'm not conservative, nor am I liberal; I found my own views consistent with the Libertarians.

Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth

I understand the necessity of political parties and I don't begrudge anyone for belonging to one...but personally I fight labels ..always have...I may be a libertarian in thinking or not but even if I were I would not call myself one. I just want to be independent and beyond political party influence.

I have less power as an independent because I don’t vote a particular party line and often voting a straight party line gives your vote more weight…but I feel more true to myself and what I think is right. I wish more politicians would vote their conscience and what they think is right rather than party line…but I understand they feel they must toe the line for support and money .

Hi Butch,

I see what you mean, I tend not to vote party lines, attempt instead to look at each candidate/issue on its own merit, or lack thereof. ;)    Since we still basically have a two party system, usually I sway more to the conservatives, but could never by a long shot agree with all their platforms.  I did cheer when Rand Paul from KY won the primary.

But the USA, it's almost hollywoodesque political process, all that razamatazz, maybe it is you are just caught up in the celebration of it all and there draw your sides, as if the whole spectacle was nothing more than a fairground amusement that mattered for the moment.

I don't think there is anything in the US that compares to the clips I've seen of British parliament going at it.

Then there are the royals. Plllllllllleeeeeeezzzzzz...........

I think that whatever is 'normal' to us, just seems well...normal! And what is different than our 'normal' seems freakish and wild. Seriously, if I saw a guy in a wig and robe, I would think it was a British play going on. But it is more 'normal' to a Brit.

As for the OP, I agree with the idea that the extreme partisan crap that is going on in the US is the main reason the government cannot get a damned thing done. I would like to think that, at some point, calmer, more mature and rational heads will prevail......but I am not holding my breath. Even the mighty Rome fell. If things continue as they are now, the US will fall also.

Oh yes, I quite agree what happens in the UK parliament is a mess, they way they go at it at each other annoys a lot of Brits also, and the televising of Parliament in action by the BBC is not doing them a lot of favours in my oppinion. But what can one expect by a bunch of public school boys with their common room ribaldry and dirt behind the ears one time working class haranguing their superiors. That with the others sleeping up on the back benches, does not inspire any faith in our political system either. But as the saying goes, empty vessels make most sound, they prove their use in parliament.

But the pomp and ceremony, perhaps it is unecessary, but it is from an ancient country and perhaps does serve to remind the voted in scabby heads what they are there for is real, not some game.

FR

I think the point is pretty well established. So what now ?

Many would conclude that we should start another party, and find candidates willing to die with running mates willing to die who will actually represent the People. Use the political party "wrench" against them as they have used it against us. You're not going to like this much. Elect me President. I will stop all foreign aid. That will get me killed, understand ? As President I can do it via EO, and would. But I think that in our present financial condition it is ridiculous for us to give away money. My money is tight right now and I won't give people a beer. When I have plenty I share, but not right now.

However we have a problem. We can't get together. I started a thread, may have been a poll a while back with the simple premise that senators and congressmen should draw their retirement just like we do, they would get SS. They would get a bit more than most because they make $160,000 a year, but the point is they would have to make sure SS was solvent and can handle it. Even in this forum people did not agree with that point, which is so basic to me that I can't believe that there was not a near revolution over it. We lack the solidarity. Their solidarity is their greed, and it works quite well.

Until and unless We The People can give the powers that be a real challenge we are doomed to wait until they actually destroy themselves, taking many of us down the tubes with them.

Money is the biggest problem, but they are in the process of destroying that anyway. But then there are 300,000,000 of us, and just half of us chipping in ten bucks each would yield a $1.5 billion dollar campaign fund. We just can't get it done. Why ? How did they do it ? It took money, money to get on TV and in the papers. Mainstream media can be bought, and that was a big part of it. Anyone you see on TV is not your friend. I think we could make some progress with a billion and a half though.

I'm starting to think that the biggest problem is that people really do not want to be free.

No, most people don't want to do the work associated with being free. It involves too much personal responsibility.

True that.
