We used to have the best education system in the world, thats right, we were number 1.

We are now number 12  (and by god it shows out here) education won't do you a bit of good pops, never did, but we gotta have top list teachers and top list unis.

Spend on education for infrastructure.

That is all, and fuck howie carr and his asswipe.

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking. Someone is actually criticizing spending more on teachers?

Sorry but large numbers of undereducated people working service industry jobs does not make for a good economy. For serious.

Neither is throwing more money at incompetent teachers who cant educate or so hamstrung by the educational hierarchy that they are unable to do their jobs. Pay for performance is fine, life preservers for those who cant teach others to swim isnt.

An interesting video to watch, since education is dragged into things...

http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity.html

Hopefully this don't get to far off topic, but interesting to think about.

willbeurdaddy -> RE: This isn't a good sign. (8/10/2010 4:40:09 PM)

btw, the report from the Fed understates where things are headed. Buckle up for another roller coaster ride.

What is interesting is that Oblabla chose not to spend the rest of the stimulus money starting 6 months or so ago, so it would have had some positive albeit shortterm impact before November. I interpret that as saving it for 2012 when he's going to need it to save his own sorry ass, and if it costs a few dozen Dem incumbents' jobs, fuck em if they cant take a joke.

Still it`s good news and better than losing jobs.

The unemployment rate is still high because of government sector jobs being cut.

You mean those temporary census jobs that were used to prop up the prior months' employment figures, of course.

Speaking of the census, they just returned 1.6 billion dollars to the treasury.

Yes, go figure, there's something that talks about an 'accurate census' being done every ten years in the US Contstitution....

I find at alot of these Tea Party rallies, folks, that honestly believe the following equation: The Economy Fails = Obama Fails = Republicans win Congress & Sarah Palin is elected as President (or insert some other Republican personality). That really is the belief. And they are motivated to make sure it happens in anyway possible. Where are the true conservatives these days?

Its good news, to hear jobs being created during a month. The more the better. Not just for the president or Congress, but for America itself! Besides, the amount of suffering that takes place when folks get laid off: marriages go to sh*t, divorces and suicides take place at a higher rate, and people are more open to destructive courses of action to 'get even'. Right now, the only group in this country that is actively trying to get the economy working against are the Democrats. The Republicans just sit on their hands and yell 'no'. The last Democrat in the office of the President, nearly reduced the national debt to zero, and started a surplus. Then we got ANOTHER, Republican in the office, and turned $2 Trillion in debt to $13 trillion in eight years. So, now this Democrat, is trying to fix alot of the problems. Anyone fixing the problem, instead of finding scape goats, gets my vote. Right now, it seems its the Democrats who are fixing problems as best as they can; and Republicans not doing much of anything good for the country (there are some exceptions to both...if rare).

I told one guy running against my representative "Get me a real job, before Nov. If you do, I'll vote for you. If you dont, I'll vote for the other guy". Still haven't gotten a job because of him, so I know the current guy in office gets my vote. I was going to vote for the current person in the seat....but if I got a $80K/year job, hellya, I'll vote for the Republican. The current person representating me, is a good person. Very hard working, to help those in her area. If I'm patient, I believe this representative, will set things in action to improve the economy much further.

.....tsk, tsk Popeye, shame on you!
You are begruding teachers now?
The fact that we are cutting teachers, and many other important support school personnel indicates how seriously bad off the American economy IS.

Even with the bail out money states will be getting, many jobs have been cut, classroom and services are being cut to the bone, class sizes are increases, programs are being cut, and many staff members are being furloughed.

Many public schools were already not in the best of shape, now they will be doing more with less, as they are responsible for educating students and trying to mold and shape the next generation.

These cuts to the school system are nothing but sad.
In the United States all children are entitled to {FAPE} a Free and Appropriate Education, many students may not have the resources to go beyond the 12th grade.

When our free and appropriate educational system is compromised or marginalized, who is it going to hurt the most in the future?

Yes, we are in for a bumpy ride! The 90 day moving averages on some stocks that I follow are absolutely ugly!
Just from the charts it looks like the next 90 days could be very ugly indeed. And one analyist I read said that we'll have a "major long term top" on Sept 3 rd.
And another analyist said to stay away from the market for the next nine months! Risk vs reward just isn't looking good and that's because of lack of growth, specifically in the private sector. Oh sure, the Feds (Obama) are expanding the govt. but that doesn't "produce" anything and it costs money, in taxes. And if Obama lets the capital gains taxes expire on Jan 1 st which he probably will, why bother to be "in the market" anyway!
Yup, a bumpy ride!

domiguy -> RE: This isn't a good sign. (8/11/2010 12:15:14 AM)

And the S&P 500 was just rosy from 2000 - 2008.

2008 -37.22
2007 5.46
2006 15.74
2005 4.79
2004 10.82
2003 28.72
2002 -22.27
2001 -11.98
2000 -9.11

If youve got some gamble in you, buy heavily in the last week of September, watch the markets rally in anticipation of a major GOP victory in the midterms, sell at the end of election week before a lame duck Congress spends its way to killing the rally. Ive been on the short side or sitting out for the last 2+ years. This will be my first long play except on individual stocks in that time.

popeye1250 -> RE: This isn't a good sign. (8/11/2010 1:06:38 AM)

Wilbeur, I don't really "play the market" I tend to buy and sell the same "basket" of stocks most of the time but that is a good idea for an option play on the S&P maybe.
Go look at the charts of NAT, OSG, and FRO since May 1 st and you'll see what I mean.
You can almost draw a straight line down the receding highs.

You would think that bribing the corrupt teachers unions at the expense of food stamps recipients would cost the Dems more points with their base then it earn get them, wouldn't you?

Jeffff -> RE: This isn't a good sign. (8/11/2010 8:45:38 AM)

Born under a bad sign
I been down since I begin to crawl
If it wasn't for bad luck,
I wouldn't have no luck at all

Hard luck and trouble is my only friend
I been on my own ever since I was ten
Born under a bad sign
I been down since I begin to crawl
If it wasn't for bad luck,
I wouldn't have no luck at all

I can't read, haven't learned how to write
My whole life has been one big fight
Born under a bad sign
I been down since I begin to crawl
If it wasn't for bad luck,
I wouldn't have no luck at all

I ain't lyin'
If it wasn't for bad luck
I wouldn't have no kind-a luck
If it wasn't for real bad luck,
I wouldn't have no luck at all

Wine and women is all I crave
A big legged woman is
gonna carry me to my grave
Born under a bad sign
I been down since I begin to crawl
If it wasn't for bad luck,
I wouldn't have no luck at all

Yeah, my bad luck boy
Been havin' bad luck all of my days, yes

Who was it that was complaining about food stamps being used for junk food? Someone on these boards was just recently. 59 dollars a month for a family of four keeps 300,000 non federal employees working. Food stamps is another of of those fraud filled assistant programs that could use some restructuring.

Given the quality of the housing, it should be rent free.
