I'm curious to know what people think of multiple profiles held by the same person.  I'm allowing multiple selection of the poll.

Personally, I don't think any person should be permitted to use more than one screen name.  The way the site is set up, there really isn't a reason for it.  (One of the reasons I was against 'flags' for pros.)  To Me, it's deceptive if you have more than one or create sock puppets for the forums.  If someone has been banned for bad behavior, I don't think they should be able to access the forums or repeat their behavior just by creating a new name.

Lately, it's been very easy to spot those who intentionally have created more than one profile to be deceptive.  I was wondering what other people think of a singular person having the ability to have multiple profiles?

In the end I have to go with as many as they like. An obvious sock puppet is pretty easy to see.

People with many profiles kinda out themselves as someone you can't really trust.

I've got a couple of old profiles knocking around-a sub one from way back when, and one where I was looking for a very specific thing that I didn't want mixed up with my regular profile. They're all hidden now, I think-I don't post on the forums with them.

Informedconsent has a rule that if you have multiple profiles you are obliged to link them to each other at the top. It seems to work pretty well as a system.

If that were the rule here I would happily comply with it, but it isn't, so I haven't.

I don't think that they actually can just make another profile under the rules if they have been banned.

I don't think they should have multiple profiles for the forums, other than just joking around. Using a second account to bolster your arguments is just idiotic and juvenile in my opinion.

I do however think that on "the other side" multiple profiles may serve a purpose for some people and I don't see a problem with that as long as they are honest about it with people they are getting to know.

There are legitimate reasons. As you stated, a switch could have one Dom and one sub profile. If each one referenced the other, it's cool.

I could also see a couple looking for a third maintaining a couples profile but keeping individual profiles for posting in the forums.

It's not my thing but if the site allows, I am kinda like........whatever.

If it is done for obvious humour......I get it.

But the rest, those that are having some sort of identity crisis or trying to be sneaky, I don't think very highly of them.

I have the profile numbersix, because I want it.

I have MrWannamaker (for obvious reasons, because I want it)

same with some others and everybody gonna know who the fuck I am the minute I type my first word.

I find the above post to have serious racial overtones.

I don't have time to be sneaky. I have a hidden profile on the other side, it says "Hib in disguise" in the sig line in case I post.

I was boggled at the whole thing of using your sock to drive a discussion--how insecure can someone be? Ditto with folks who leave with great drama then don't just say who they are when they come back. Like it's a secret?

I don't care how many names someone wants to use. If I had a sensitive question that I felt more comfortable asking in a sock puppet name, i would.

Also, sometimes people have relationships and those relationships fail. They might want a new name because they were known as "LordJerkOffsSlave", so they make a new identity to start over

Okay now I am trying to figure out just who is the sock for whom on that other thread? It's not like admin can't TELL, after all, so they will pull someone banned who is trying to post under another name. Hmph. It's all so much rhubarb.

I agree that name changes are fine, sometimes a person might want a new persona. Nice to have a heads up on who they were, though.

I agree with this. When someone told me that s/he did this on the more "serious" sections of the boards, I lost all respect for that person. It was used to manipulate replies to questions that were not getting the desired responses when posted under the other name. It made me sick to see people replying to the alleged new person when the poster was actually a regular who wasn't brave enough to be honest under the known screen name, and lied to people who were supposed to be friends with the OP. It was not my place to "out" the liar, but it took a lot of restraint.

*typo*
