We have a lot of Nurses in here and others in Healthcare. What do you people think of this article?
Have you been groped or attacked while on the job?

History itself proves that during hard economic times, people get stressed out and start doing a lot of fucked up shit. This is just a reflection of this basic truth.

I've been a nurse for 30 years. Been bit in the boob, hit, slapped, punched, kicked, spit at, peed on and had poop thrown at me more times than I can count. It comes with the territory and you learn quickly how to increase your reaction time and how to intercept a punch. I suspect Holly and the other nurses here have had similar experiences.

I have no problems with a dementia patient, a nuerolicaly impaired or brain metastisis patient acting out. They don't have control of themselves. It's the patient who has full knowledge of what they are doing that I take issue with. I have my own non violent ways of getting them back tho. They generally come around to my way of thinking.

                           mbmbn

ETA : I'm not so sure I believe it is increasing any more than it has always been. I was a nursing assistant before I was a nurse and it was prevalent then too. I think the old timers like myself just found ways around it and never thought about it as assault. Which, of course it is.

I dont think I could put it better any other way than Maybemaybenot did..
Its not new, Its not gonna go away, and not a problem just in the US.
The numbers are way to high, the severity is horrendous, but the reality is, its been seen going back decades.
My grandmother lost a fingertip to a drunk patient in an ER in 1958

The clinic here in town that handles most of the low income and indigent patients now has an on-site security officer. A few weeks ago a patient tried to stab one of the doctors. And this is a smaller, safer city than the major metro areas. In high crime areas it is normal for clinics to have bullet proof glass in the waiting rooms. Several people I know who work in health care have been threatened and attacked by patients. The really high risk health care jobs are at Emergency Rooms, women's clinics because of anti-abortion violence, pain clinics, mental health facilities and of course any jail or prison.

Are you suggessting that repeated slaps(at least as often as necessary ?)upside the head fosters civility in children?
This actually explains a fair amount of your anger and at least some of your deepseated issues.

I don't think it has become worse than it was. It is just getting more press. I have been hit, punched, kicked, strangled, bit, spit on, and threatened with knives. My speciality is psych/addictions so I have always considered it part of the job, like hazardous duty. When I worked med/surg I encountered the same things though so I think unless the patient is out cold it happens in almost all areas of health care.

I can completely understand that. I could never work in the ER. People want their paper cuts and sore throats to be treated immediately, I'd bitch slap someone for certain.

Fair discipline fosters civility in children.

My uncle had a rather unique approach to discipline. He did things kids, at least in my day, loved to do. Camping, fishing, hunting - hunting that rarely produced a kill I might add. It was mostly wandering around in the woods, talking, learning to track, and hunt with a notion at the end of something like, you know, we really don't need to eat that one.

He was always taking us, brother, myself, and a couple of cousins out to do something, maybe watch a meteor shower, maybe to the coast to hang out on some barrier island and fish for a few days. His form of discipline? Give him shit, you stayed home. There was no discussion on that matter.

This has NOTHING to do with Health Care Act (passed earlier this year), nor the industry. Every industry, like energy, transportation, customer service, financial....even the PORN industry has people getting groped/attacked. This has everything to do with people's behaviors and manners....or lack there of. Yes, it is a well known fact, that good looking, young adults, get fondled and groped. Or have you never been in a club or bar, in the past 30 years, popeye1250? It is also a well known fact, that people do and say things with little common sense or consideration for others.

So again, how does this apply to Health Care (meaning the law, not the industry)?

I'm not being a smart ass, but did you read the correct link ? The entire article is about nurses being assaulted.

I'm trying to figure out where you are seeng this in any way related or a commentary on the Health Care Act.

I have to say the same thing was true for My ex mother-in-law.  She had been in a different department and then transferred to ER due to personnel shortages.  I swear it changed her.

(This post is not meant to knock My ex mother-in-law in any way.  Before that, she had been a wonderful person.  It literally was her experiences in ER that I am basing My statements on.)

My sister was an ER nurse here in the UK, and she was attacked at least once a week. Several times over the years she had to take time off to recover from injuries. Now she works in the critical care unit and she is still attacked - this time by relatives rather than patients.

But then again, I'm a teacher. This year alone I have been assaulted four times by students - three of those time I got bumps and bruises, the last time I had a broken arm.

Violence is all around us, and sadly it's those of us with a vocation who choose to try to help who are the ones who are hurt.
