Edited to add: This wasn't in response to MstrssPassion, i hit the wrong button, it's more a response to the board at large.
Also, i am Jewish and don't truly see a correlation between this form of numbering, tattooing  and the atrocities of  the death camps.

It's labeling someone with a random number that doesn't mean anything to them or the dominant in question asides from that it's a "slave number".

Edited to add: I'm playing Devil's advocate to an extent. I'm not sure how I feel on the issue but my dominant is firm in his decision that I will never be numbered in this manner because he does feel it's too close to the practice of numbering by the Nazis.

Voltare -> RE: Slave registry (12/18/2006 10:56:02 AM)

Actually, I gave the site a more thorough once over.  It seems that the slave 'number' is a gimmick to attact BDSMers and the Alt lifestyle curious.  Subs/slaves sign up, are assigned a 'number' and from there, are permitted to browse profiles, write, etc - standard matcmaking fodder.  The trick here seems to be to attract internet couples who are already involved, who then stick around after the inevitable cyber-breakup.  The banner ads pay the bills.

I did notice that you can't post on their forums until a seven day waiting period has passed.  I wasn't impressed.

*chuckles* I'm really not surprised. I had a feeling the thing was a silly gimmick. I would rather be tattooed with the date we got together or the date he collars me (I'm hopeful! [:)]) then some random number.

Basically, 'It never happens' isn't a wise phrase to make use of here, and that's really what stirs such a fuss.  After the past few hours of browsing, I am convinced that people are capable of the most bizzare, twisted, and evil acts that would make a cold blooded serial killer squirm with discomfort.

Excellent commentary Voltare.

That is the opiate of the internet... where anything becomes possible, even if it is utterly improbable beyond the pale.

SlaveAkasha -> RE: Slave registry (12/18/2006 3:29:14 PM)

It is a random number, I don't think anyone can deny that.  I do think that it does have meaning if the two people give it that meaning.  I am sure most couples have rituals or things that others think are just plain silly, but it still means the same to them.

I have a tag that Master got me, it has my name, my SLRN, and the date I was collared to him.  I love it even though to some it seems pointless.  I wouldn't get them tattooed though, I agree that's too close to Nazi camps for me, but I will get a very nice one next year.

I just wish I could figure out why people are always putting down the things that others do around here.  If it's not your cup of tea, that is fine, but for goodness sake, let the ones that enjoy it keep doing so without feeling like they are players, wannabe's, childish, etc... or put down by others all the time.

Petruchio -> RE: Slave registry (12/18/2006 7:45:06 PM)

Wouldn't it be funny if EVERY registered 'slave' had been given a certificate with the SAME NUMBER!

Yeah, that would be just about as funny as every Dom on this site choosing "Petruchio" as their name.  HooBoy!  A laugh a minute!

The reason for the 7 day waiting period is an attempt to stop people setting up fake profiles in order to post flaming or annoying posts and then disappearing. If you are serious about joining you will wait the 7 days is the idea.

Joining a forum isn't exactly like buying a gun... Flamers flame. It happens. You deal with it and expect it from the internet.

Why on earth should we expect or accept it. The site in question set up this rule to ensure that people who wish to post to their site are serious about their wish to do so. It stops to a certain extent HNG's finding a site they have no interest in, setting up a profile, posting abuse and then disappearing. It works for that and its sister site informedconsent.

Because there are certain things in life that you just have to expect. One of those things is that people will use the internet to be jerks because they think they won't get caught. You don't have to accept it, you can call them on it every time, but if you aren't expecting it... well, then you are deluding yourself about the nature of the beast that is internet forums. Every forum has at least one troll, particularly when it comes to these sorts.

This site happens to have not accepted it. They have set the rule in place to discourage those "jerks". Of course it does not stop all of them but if it stops the hit and run ones then it makes it a far nicer place for those that are serious about posting there. I really can't see the issue with this. The site has a large number of members and those that join are happy to abide by the 7 day rule.

Voltare -> RE: Slave registry (12/19/2006 2:25:53 AM)

Nah, I don't buy it.  I totally understand the reasons folks desire a more closed community, and that's great if it floats there boat.  But if you have effective moderators and relatively intelligent guests, the flamers (baiters, spammers, trolls, HNGs, etc etc etc) will be quickly identified for what they are.  As I write this (it's not even 8pm EST) there's over a hundred people reading this site.  I haven't noticed any rash of dozens of cyber geeks posting idiotic things.

The more effort a webmaster puts into restricting their members, the more they're going to go somewhere else.  Considering that the SRN site is hardly a non-profit organization, taking a more customer service oriented approach would be the wise thing to do.  I could buy a 12 hour or 24 hour 'approval' period.

Another method that works well is to require a rather extensive profile.  People get bored of clicking checkboxes and filling out forms, but if it takes twenty minutes to fill a profile out, most spammers and trolls get bored and move on to easier prey.

But hey, it's their sandbox.

Actually I was really talking about their sister site Informedconsent which is probably the UKs largest BDSM community site. Many who have profiles here also use that site as it is more UK based. Membership is increasing so I guess people are happy to have that kind of restriction as a pay off for a web board and logs without the hit and run posters.

I agree with you. my Master has also talked about getting me a tag with my name & my SLRN. i love the idea of it.

LovingKitten -> RE: Slave registry (12/22/2006 7:41:29 AM)

I have never heard of it....

TopinPa -> RE: Slave registry (12/22/2006 6:36:38 PM)

I understand what would make a slave or master want to register a slave but for me, I've always been skeptical about who might stumble across the registry site and how that information could be used in a negative way.
That and I wonder how something like that might come up on a Google search.
I didn't mean to throw negative thoughts on an otherwise interesting thread but it just crossed my mind.

In all fairness, Shadowhawk; Quote: Leonidas" a registration number tatooed on the slave has ominous echos of Aushwitz about it"

That was exactly what i was referring to in my first post, but did not want to detract from my question.

i am Jewish, and although i understand the difference between consensual slavery and death camps; the symbolism of tatooed numbers on human flesh will always have a profound effect on me.

i am more curious about what the registration itself means to both the Mistress/Master and slave; it's purpose; etc, etc.

Shadowhwk, if i may ask, how many slaves have You registered? And how long were You with Your current slave before You registered her?

~rain~

I understand that it's just a way for people to declare they are in a relationship with each other but as a Jew, I'm not capable of dealing with a tattooed number on me nor any body modifications. It just brings up feelings of Dr. Mengele to me.

So, i was chatting with someone who informed me of this Slave registry thing. i checked it out, and the mere idea that exists makes me nervous, (for what i'm hoping are obvious reasons).

What i'd like to know is: have any Master/Mistresses used this registry? What exactly is the purpose? -Is it supposed to be the equivilant of a marriage license? Or is this more of a "business" agreement.

Also, what happens if One's slave runs away, and/or disappears? Does this mean that the Mistress/Master would send out a search party to find, capture, and return "their" slave?

Are there any safeguards for the slave included in the registry?

BTW, i checked out the website, but it didn't give me the answers i was looking for.

Any info about this would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

~rain~
If anyone in authority wanted to hunt down  lifestylers... they sure have a nice list to begin with.

FancySeatCover -> RE: Slave registry (12/26/2006 11:00:49 AM)

I am a owned slave that is on the slave registry for over 4 years now. It's a nice rememberance to look at my registry certificate in the scrap book.
