On the other side of the Home Depot mess is the customers. I was talking to a friend who works in paint there. He had a lady calling asking for a "manual paint sprayer" (as in hand pumped) I told him to tell her they were with the left handed screw drivers.

Big curmudgeonly "Humph"... Yep, I happen to own a manual paint sprayer that belonged to my grandfather. Before there were spray cans you had manual pump paint sprayers for doing fine small projects. Think of a hand pump unit that worked similar to an airbrush. I think the pump painter actually belonged to his father who made side money in carved toys back during the depression. Now, where can I find a wood plane without paying antique prices for it? Do you know what a carbide lamp is? Or, what to use to fuel a blowtorch? How about a draw knife? Do you know what the difference in marine grade, finish grade, and sheathing plywood are? If your friend had true hardware expertise he could have directed the customer to the airless airbrush units sold via Home Desperate's website. Yep, ignorance is rampant. OMG: Went to my favourite store to buy some fauncy soap: both of their tills were frozen with a computer glitch; tech support had been called, so we're lined up watching both clerks doing nothing. I grab a bar which is eezackly $10 and say, '14% sales tax, that makes it $11.40, here's $12.' She HAD TO GO TO A CALCULATOR to calculate 14% of $10, and to add $1.40 to $10.00: ouch. Here's the kicker; she COULDN"T FIGURE OUT THE CHANGE EITHER and I had to tell her what 12.00-11.40 was. Ay chihuahua. Don't do drugs, kids!

Marine plywood, I havent seen since I lived in miami and knew a couple of boat builders. They just dont tend to sell the stuff in small towns this far inland.. Draw knives, I have used as well as their lil cousin the spoke shave. If I had a carbide lamp, I could get nice $ at an antique store. Same with an authentic blowtorch. MAP and propane have put em out of business. Safer too.

Some years ago I called a new pizza place to have a pizza delivered for my husband. The guy taking the order asked what size pizza I wanted. I asked what the difference was size-wise between small and medium. I expected him to say something along the lines of 'a small is 10 inches, the medium is 14" Instead he replied, "The medium is a little larger than the small."... Oooookayyy. So I explained that it was just for one person and didn't want to have a lot left over. His answer: (wait for it... it's a good one....) "Oh, it's just for one person? I can cut it into 4 pieces instead of 8." I simply hung up the phone.

I had to hop up and grab the chair and bend the bars on it to get him out. Instead of a "thank you" I get a dirty look like I should have minded my own business.

I was the host (flunky) for a visiting doctor who was flying in from the UK. He was reading his itinerary to me over the phone and we were both a bit nervous because he was giving a lecture scheduled for 11am. I told him it was a half hour drive from the airport to the lecture hall. He asked me to recheck the drive time because the itinerary was printed in the UK where they use the metric system. He later told me he was nearly too embarrassed to get off the plane.

At wal-mart this afternoon. This is one of those ones I am starting to forgive because it is getting rediculous how many questions the Debit/Credit Slider things asks. Waited for 15 minutes because neither the checker or the Person using the card could figure out how to make it do credit. After 15 Minutes I asked... do you want to do Credit or Debit? She said Credit. I Slid the card, it asked for the Pin, and she went to get upset again. I showed her the big red button that said Cancel/Credit button. The card ran thorugh and then the checker asked me to show her what I did. So I ran my things through on Credit and she was amazed apparently they don't teach that to new checkers. QSM

Years ago I worked for a national cable company. Large power outage occurs in Ottawa, where our offices are, but backup generators kicked in and the phone's still worked. Me: You have called xyz cable my name is Chantal how can I help you today? Silly customer: My cable isn't working, everything's black. Me: Sir, there's a power outage affecting Ottawa, there's no power. Silly Customer: Well, how can that be, I can still see inside my apartment. Me: Sir, it's still daylight, that doesn't affect the power outage, the power is OUT. Silly Customer: So when are you going to turn the cable back on? Me: bang head softly on desk. Me: Hello. blah blah 2nd silly customer: why isn't the young and the restless on? It's the president Me: Ma'am we have nothing to do with the programming, they obviously cut in for an announcement 2nd silly: But you're the cable company, I pay for my cable every month, i want my soap opera Me: Ma'am again, we can't help what the stations do, we just provide the cable service 2nd silly: Well, that's just ridiculous, I want a credit for missing my show Me: (After softly banging head on desk) Yes Ma'am, I've calculated the credit for you, it comes to 05 cents. 2nd silly: Well, that's not what I pay every month, I want a credit for a month. Me: Ma'am, when the President is done, the regular programming will come back on, I can't do more than credit you for an hour. 2nd silly: Ridiculous, what good are you if you can't show my soap? I want to talk to a manager who can call the President and tell him to get off my show. Me: Yes, Ma'am, but there's no supervisor or manager available, they'll call you back within 24-48 hrs 2nd silly: Aaah, forget it, my show's back on. Me: hang up phone and once again start talking to myself....a regular occurence that used to have the other staff in stitches....i had quite the running commentaries to make when I hung up... patience of a saint required for any call center. They also insisted I use a headset as I used to bang the receiver down and management was worried I'd break a phone. [:)]
