People are not the only ones who do stupid crap. How about businesses! Ever read the warning labels on some products?

"Do not use orally." -- On a toilet bowl cleaning brush.
"Remember, objects in the mirror are actually behind you." -- On a motorcycle helmet-mounted rear-view mirror.
"Beware! To touch these wires is instant death. Anyone found doing so will be prosecuted." -- On a sign at a railroad station.
"Do not attempt to stop the blade with your hand." -- In the manual for a Swedish chainsaw.
"Warning: Misuse may cause injury or death." -- Stamped on the metal barrel of a .22 calibre rifle.

and my favorite..

patience of a saint required for any call center.  They also insisted I use a headset as I used to bang the receiver down and management was worried I'd break a phone.  [:)]

It's not just call centers (although I've worked in them, too). One Monday morning, my work partner took a call from a customer who had an order going out that day. After about 30 seconds, I knew it was a nutter. When my partner got off the phone, cursing me for making him take the call, he relayed the conversation. It went like this, although the real thing was quite a bit longer:
quote:

Partner: Hello, blah blah, can I help you?
Customer: Yes, my order is late and I want a refund on the shipping.
Partner: Can I get your order number or last name?
Customer: *gives name*
*partner checks the order database*
Partner: Sir, your order was placed on Saturday evening.
Customer: That's right. I paid for overnight shipping. It should have been here on Sunday.
Partner: Sir, as noted on our website, we are closed on weekends.
Customer: I know that. Where is my order?
Partner: Your order is shipping today, Sir.
Customer: It should have been here yesterday.
Partner: Sir, we are closed on weekends. Also, Fedex does not pick up on Saturdays, and they do not deliver on Sundays.
Customer: *getting angry* I understand that, but I paid for OVERNIGHT shipping, so it should have been here yesterday, today at the latest.
*partner starts making gun to the head motions*
Partner: Sir, our business hours and shipping schedule are clearly posted on our website. We are closed on weekends, and Fedex is closed on weekends (*not totally true, but close enough*). Your order was placed on Saturday evening, and is shipping today for delivery tomorrow.
Customer: I understand all that. So, when will I get my shipping cost refunded?

I work for a dealership that is fairly large and had many departments. A lady called and asked me if she could talk to somebody that knew about trucks

A semi-famous director was in town to do a movie. Walking home one night I ran into him and his AD, both looking lost, and although I don't dig his work, being the ambassadress I am I helped him out with the kind of directions I like: this street 'x' runs north/south, you want to go two blocks west that way and turn north onto 'y' street. He looked at me agape, then burst out laughing and said 'I've never had those kind of directions from a WOMAN.` I told him he obviously dated too many blondes, turned on my heel and stalked off to the delighted hoots of his AD.

I just remembered a conversation I had in college. (a LONG damn time ago).  We were talking about the best brand of hot dogs and I mentioned that Hebrew Nationals were the best.  A guy looked at me and said in all seriousness "I didnt know you were Jewish"

All I could do was shake my head.

MercTech -> RE: How stupid have people gotten (8/23/2010 10:00:07 AM)

My classic dumbshit clerk memory happened in Norfolk, Virginia at a Captain D's.

I had just finished washing and vacuuming the car when I got a call. An old friend has pulled in (Navy town, ya know) and wondered what I was doing.

We met up at Capt. D's. I'd already had lunch so I just ordered a large iced tea.

"That will be 87 cents."
I quickly count out 87 cents from the nickels, dimes, and pennies I'd gleaned from the car seats.
The girl just gets this wide eyed stare.
I scoop the change off the counter and place it in her hand.

She grabs another young lady and asks, holding out her hand full of change, "How much dis?"

That was when I noticed her name tag had "manager" underneath the name.

______________________

My ex ran a bookstore in the Tidewater area.
My ex had a test for potential employees.
She disabled the "change" display on the cash register.
She had the interviewee ring up some test sales.

No change countback = no job.
Wrong change countback = no job.

I always thought counting change and knowing how to make change was a third grade skillset.

This topic feeds into what I have been dealing with lately with recruiters, headhunters.

I am looking to leave my current job so a ton have been calling.

I get all bitchy on them when they ask me if I ever sold advertising. I have done so for 22 years.

I say, did you not read the resume? They say, well yes, but some people lie about experience.

Lie about 23 years of experience??? Yeah, ok, sparky.

The best are when they don't speak English very well and are discussing MY communication skills.

AQuietSimpleMan -> RE: How stupid have people gotten (8/23/2010 11:25:11 AM)

Curious......

How do you have 23 years experience when you have only been doing it 22 years.

I mean is that the kind of sill questions you get asked?

LMAO

Oh, fuck, sue me for hitting the incorrect numerical key.

OF course you missed the point, but hey, carry on dude.

I don't know what to say about the Boeing one ... but most of them are only there because people have tried them. Check out notalwaysright.com some time. There is one that deals specifically with that:

Preempting Stupidity
Tree Nursery | New York, NY, USA
Manager: “When laying down the sod, make sure the green side goes up.”

Customer: “Are you serious? You have to tell me that the green side of the grass goes side up?”

Manager: “I wouldn’t have to say it if someone didn’t make the mistake.”

SBJames1 -> RE: How stupid have people gotten (8/29/2010 10:47:47 AM)

What really cracks me up is reading a rant by someone who can't spell or use simple grammar correctly, and who is talking about how stupid people are. There are several of you here.

We all do stupid things somewhere, in some situation. All of us.

The stupidest people are the ones who think that only other people do stupid things. The most ignorant people are the ones who think they're above that.

Many of the things described here could be caused by things like head injury, illness, or trauma of other sorts.

I know, because I have experienced illness and other challenges that have at times made me do the seemingly stupidest things, like when I had insomnia so bad for so long that I didn't know my name or my age anymore, nevermind being able to do something like make change.

Don't we have better things to write about here?

I have always said that the world would be a much better place if people were simply more observant. And secondly, if they showed a little more patience.

But here's a good one. I'm at work one night and a guy walks up to me and asks, "have you seen a car come through here?" I say, as politely as possible, "dude, it's a parking garage..."

Having been re-instated on a certain brand of canned corn:

Open. Heat. Serve.

The reason? Too many customers complained that the serving instructions had been deleted from the label. [8|]

As for my own stupidity, this morning, not having replaced my ashtray last night and put the butt in a can of pop, don't I take a sip of warm pop complete with ash and cigarette butt. Not enough sleep anyone?? [:'(]

My favorite recruiter story: I got a call from one for a mechanical engineering design job.  I have a degree in mechanical engineering but have done quality engineering and reliability engineering since, not design.  Also, I have no experience with AutoCad, which is necessary for design.  I politely asked her what in my resume made her think of me as a suitable candidate for a design position, and she said, "Oh, I don't go so much by degrees and experience as much as aptitude."  Yeah, right, lady - try to sell a candidate to a company on the basis that he really wants to have the job.

There's a company in Broomfield that has been advertising that they want a reliability engineer.  They're been advertising that for fifteen years!  I interviewed for it once ten years ago and was told "We'd love to hire you for this position, but it's for a reliability engineer with an engineering degree and five years of experience.  You have an engineering degree and only four and a half years of experience."  The guy who said that had written the req and could have hired whomever he wanted.

The position is still open.  I get calls for the position from recruiters every year or so.

daddysliloneds -> RE: How stupid have people gotten (9/5/2010 7:30:56 AM)

i'd love it when they put people on cash registers that can actually add and subtract and count back change...

my order was $11.27; i gave her $21.27...

the manager was called to the register by the clerk because she accidentally entered into the register that i had given her a $20 and had no idea how to give me back my change; i explained to her that she owed me $10 and why...

she sat there and argued with me that she had to get the manager to clear the 'over-ring' and re-ring me up. everyone in line sat there and shook their heads in dis-belief.

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: How stupid have people gotten (9/5/2010 8:24:48 AM)

I have to agree with you on that one lil, I don't know how many times I've had to let cashiers know that the amount they rang in as the amount given has absolutely NOTHING to do with the price or purple flying orangutangs slinging fiery neon poop.

I order Chinese food for myself and a friend of mine. As a drink we ask for orange soda. When the order gets to the door, there is two oranges in the bag along with two straws. Where is my orange soda?!

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: How stupid have people gotten (9/5/2010 5:03:06 PM)

Another one from my retail days, this was before debit cards and we still accepted personal cheques.  I worked the customer service desk and was put in charge of the chqs returned NSF.  I'd give them 2 chances to come in then call in the police and charge them with fraud.

I had one idiot who bounced 5 cheques and never came in but I knew exactly who he was.  So he has the nerve to come in one day to make a pymt on his store credit card with an unemployment chq, bringing his 4 yr old daughter no less.  I knew something was off, the chq wasn't even in his name.  Took 6 months for the chq to make it's way back to me, but it was a stolen chq.  When the police arrived they were surprised that I could give them such an accurate description of said dingdong down to what his daughter was wearing.  Caught, charged with fraud and finally imprisoned, never even got the chance to testify.  Once his lawyer saw everyone had showed up in court, he just pled him  out guilty.
