If I remember right, when this couple first came into the spotlight on t.v. they WERE on government handouts. They received medicaid and foodstamps. Now I understand that sometimes you just need a handup, not a handout and using the system in place is a good thing. But come on....20 children? The only reason they aren't on all that now is BECAUSE of the show. (correct me if I'm wrong by all means).

Personally, I would never have any more children. I have 3 and they are 3 plenty. It's hard enough to raise one in this day and age, I cannot imagine how they do it. And comparing this to our grandparents day isn't even in the same ballpark. The cost of living was much lower, education was cheaper and large families weren't uncommon back in the day when you lived on a farm and were pretty self sufficient.

I just shake my head when religion is used as an excuse to do whatever you want without thought of how it affects anybody else.

I can't stop anybody from procreating (though in some cases boy howdy does that gene pool need to dry up), so my thoughts and opinions are strictly my own. I wouldn't put my ideas off anybody else either. I don't believe abortion to be a viable method of birth control, and I think it's insane to refuse to use birth control because of religious reasons. If you want to procreate until your uterus falls out, that's on you. Personally I think it's bug shit crazy. If your god didn't want you to use it, why would he have given someone the knowledge to make it?

If they could afford to pay the hospital for the medical care of the last one - in hospital for a month? - then more power to them to pop out a few more. I can't imagine what the bill for the little girl was?   If they can't afford the bill, then they shouldn't have any more.

Easy - if you can't afford the kids, you don't have them!
There are a few more women that should ascribe to this tenent - like everyone on welfare that is there for children they can't afford.

No, you are not.

So we're up in arms about the 19 and counting bunch. Yay. Where is the outrage about the millions on welfare and other forms of government support who just keep creating more mouths to feed? We've created this entitlement culture in our country where the "gummint" will take care of the millions of people who continue to bear children they cannot support and that's okay but the 19 and counting bunch is a travesty.

Your memory might be faulty, perhaps before making such accusations you should back them up with real information.[8|]

They have rental units that they make money from. They buy things used, including the items for building their kitchen..diswasher, stove, cabinets, counters. They pay cash for everything and owe no money.

gungadin09 -> RE: they want ANOTHER baby? (8/15/2010 9:42:13 AM)

i have a few aunts and uncles on my dad's side that all have, like 13, 14 kids. And i thought that was bad. But, seriously, i've never even met most of my first cousins. When i was little, that's the life i thought i was headed for, basically spitting out kids. So glad i was wrong.

Having said that, i still think that couple has the right to have 20 kids if they want to. There are a lot of weird families out there. Mine was just as weird, without having so many siblings. And i don't think my cousins would complain about their upbringing, as unusual as it was.

But, yeah. That's a little bit screwy.

They all look clothed, fed and happy. And at this point at least one or two of the children must be legally adults by now, and a couple more of them must be a year or two away from the age of adulthood.

I have no idea how they feed that many kids....hell....2 large loaves of bread for lunch every day. Six chickens in the oven for dinner? Sure sounds a bit insane, but as long as they're not popping out kids and looking for gov't handouts, I say go for it.

Would I ever do it? No way. One was the perfect number for me, but some people enjoy large families. And who is to say what the "cut off" number should be? 8, 10, 12 kids? Like I said, by the time you're on kid number 20, several of the others are already adults, or soon-to-be adults anyway. Christ, at that rate, there's gotta be at least one kid per year reaching the age of adulthood, so techinically it's not really like they're actually raising 20 kids all at the same time. They're all just living as one big happy family, and every year or two, another one of them turns 18, learns to drive, goes to work and/or starts college.

As far as being high-risk in her 40's. Plenty of women take that risk for what they believe in and what they hope for or what they want. Doesn't matter if it's kid number one or kid number 20, it's a very personal, and I'm sure (difficult) decision that many women make. What if she dies and leaves one motherless, 3 motherless or 20 motherless? At least they would still have their father, and their adult siblings to help carry the load.

You fail to acknowledge the problem of overpopulation.  What about the other inhabitants of this planet?  Is it ok to just populate the earth with my species at the expense of other creatures?  Never mind the fact that the environment depends on all the creatures that are here in order to function and be a life supporting planet.

We also put others in danger, danger of famine, disease, and warfare, when we choose to overpopulate without regard for the other creatures here.

For those that want large families, guess what?  We already have a large family, the family that resides on this planet and we need to learn to live together, because we really can't live without each other.  And I'm referring to all species, not just one.

Best. Answer. On. This. Thread.
I am long since unconcerned with having a popular opinion that folks will agree with, however much I like and respect all of you. However idealist it is of me to say so, unless humanity starts thinking of itself as a collective race on the Earth and not just these little nuclear units, we're pretty much up shit creek.
Go ahead and tell us it's none of our business how many kids anyone has. Go right ahead and be self-righteous on behalf of the Duggars. Bless their hearts and yours. By the time each of their kids marries and has a big family (which they almost certainly will), and THOSE kids each marries and has a big family.. it won't be YOUR problem by then, now will it? Of course, I won't be here either, so it won't be mine.
But it'll be someone's.. theirs.
Have fun envisioning how these people are going to find work, peace, sustenance, in a world that is already having very serious trouble providing for those who are already here.
I maintain: just because you CAN do something, doesn't necessarily mean that you SHOULD.
Excuse me while I go enjoy the peace and quiet in my house here in my time, now that all but one of my children is grown and gone, and the fact that I'm only Michelle's age and have my health, my muscle tone and half my life left.. *thinks about a trip to the beach*

you are entitled to your opinion, of course...but don't forget one of  the reasons they can afford that brood is because they put their family on TV and therefore subject themselves to the comments of others.

The parents have sort of made their family the "freaking business" of everyone that watches their reality show or reads the articles that have their participation.

Actually, most of the West is down to zero population growth, or even negative population growth, and I seriously doubt one horny out of control couple is going to change that.... it is best to know what you speak of before posting on the topic....

For example, my mom was one of 11, she had 4 kids, out of those 4 kids only 2 of us has children. My brother and I only had one each... this is the trend throughout most of America. In Italy a few years ago they were PAYING people to have kids because their population pyramid was screwed up... too many old people and not enough to replace them...

Now, we could always become like China, and have a one child policy... perhaps you would like that better

I find this sorta thing to be totally selfish .    I don't see this as much different than some subs on here -  "it's all about what I want "  !

Nor do I see this couple as much different than those repulsive puppy mills.    There's thousands of children - already here - that ache every day to have a permanent home of their own.   So not only are these folks adding disproportionately to the population ,  as supposed lovers of children , they're doing nothing to alleviate the homeless child problem .

That 'ole  "just because you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD"  argument.    That boy oughta be neutered !    And I'd be happy to do the job !         [;)]

You are comparing a women who has every intention of raising her children and has already shown that it can be done to a puppy mill? Do you even know what a puppy mill is?

I agree.. I think this family is freaky. I would not do this. Most people I know would not do this. They are way beyond the "norm".....I have no problem with people thinking they are freaks, even not approving of the choice...BUT when we start saying they "shouldn't" have this many kids because of global population, or they "shouldn't" because someone without any sort of proof claims they are on public assistance, or they "Shouldn't" because the mother could die. Or they shouldn't because in large families the kids are expected to be more responsible, as if expecting kids to be responsible is some form of child abuse... well I don't think that is appropriate...

I also do not think it is appropriate to attempt to limit family size by governmental decree, or compare a woman having kids to a puppy mill

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: they want ANOTHER baby? (8/15/2010 12:14:06 PM)

And that policy has gotten China some very serious problems, like not enough women for the men to marry, and people are actually stealing women  and stuff. It was not a good well thought out  policy. And if I remember right some kids were being aborted if it was a girl and they wanted a boy. And people still had more than one kid, they just hid them and made them second class citizens in their own homes, if they were the second one.

However I know you were just being sarcastic w/ith the suggestion.
