BrooklynGrl28 -> Obvious scams (8/17/2010 8:14:06 AM)

I keep getting contacted by people who are obviously running a scam: just send me money for a plane ticket and ... A quick look at their profile and its obvious these people are a scam. For every 1 that contacts me there is maybe 10 more I see when looking through other people's profiles. These people are SOOO obvious. They must be getting money from some people or they wouldn't keep coming back to CM. Can't CM do something about this kind of stuff? Its like somebody asking me to just help them collect their millions of winnings from the nigerian lottery!!

They already did....right above every single message when you open an email here.

But it is a little bit like telling people to LOOK before they cross a street, some simply won't do it and then they complain if they have an accident.

Personally I think that the more obvious the scam the better, less people will fall for it!

Can't they do something about the tons of people that don't follow the rules when they come over here to whine about it as well? Oh wait.....they do....about both.

Yes, thankfully they are obvious because there seems to be more than a few naive people around here who fall for poorly worded/written emails and profiles advertising model-like photos all for the taking...if the price is right.
Maybe the problem isn't so much that of an over abundance of scammers but instead a large amount of everyday people who want to believe what these people post enough to let their common sense take a backseat to fantasy and instant gradification in the form of a "pre-trained slave" or some other nonsense.

They must be getting money from some people or they wouldn't keep coming back to CM.

There's a sucker born every minute...and someone willing to show their appreciation for that birth.

Perhaps you didn't notice a few things on the other side. There are these wonderful "block", "delete" and "hide" buttons which might make your time spent gazing at the "10 or more" profiles you say you scan through easier to handle. Also, CM makes themselves quite clear about NOT sending money to anyone. If people choose to disregard this advice...whose fault is that?

This sort of reaction depresses me. I've roughly the same thing before and I'll say it again, it is not that big a job to moderate the other side. It would not cost anything. Especially considering the scammers would give up when they were foiled. The 'like it or lump it' attitude doesn't do the site any good at all.

stef -> RE: Obvious scams (8/17/2010 1:08:20 PM)

Expecting adults to exercise even the tiniest amount of common sense is clearly asking too much.

Actually, there was a problem with one of the trucks, but if you paypal me another $500 I can have her to you by a week from friday and I will even throw in her twin sister at no additional cost.

Ya realise that vague condescending comment works equally well (or badly) on both sides of the argument.

I wouldn't say lump it or leave it. I'd say, find some common sense or stay off the internet.

They tell you right off the bat, don't send money to anyone for any reason. How hard is that to understand?

DCWoody -> RE: Obvious scams (8/17/2010 1:28:41 PM)

It's not. No-one is saying that it's impossible/difficult to step over the metaphorical dogshit, but that doesn't mean we're happy with there being turds all over the place.

It's not condescending at all.  I just find it mind-boggling that adults need to be told that sending money to complete strangers is not necessarily a good idea.

Mistletoe -> RE: Obvious scams (8/17/2010 1:31:02 PM)

Any site you go to has scammers. Common sense is required when you do anything anywhere on line. Geeesh!

DCWoody -> RE: Obvious scams (8/17/2010 1:34:37 PM)

Sorry, didn't mean ta assume your intent, just get annoyed that the general community response to these sort of (IMO perfectly reasonable) threads is to take the piss.

Yet, you're still here.

There must be something about this place, scammers notwithstanding, that keeps you coming back. Interesting.

Me too! Though it has been at least a week since the last one.

The best solution to this problem, I think, is to not read any CM-mails one receives.
