I'm looking for a good source for bird toys. Our newest Cockatoo can turn one of those big $30 wood toys into mulch in less than an hour. We are going to go broke trying to keep him busy. Sir is making some toys for him but I'd love to find a source that is reasonable too.

Well, I just give my chinchillas branches from the back yard.

But LadyHibiscus has a parrot.

Thank you Steven. I tried to call her before I posted this but I must have transferred her number into my new cell phone wrong. I sent her an email though.

I am a former owner.

mirrors- bells and rocks and sticks from the yard.  You can also place the cage near a window.

Whatever you do- do NOT have the cage near a TV set.

The parrot will ALWAYS be the loudest thing in the house.

Also watch perfumes and smoke- they do not like it.

Also-  never yell at the parrot.

To them that is fun.  when they are bad COVER the cage.   once they quiet down then remove the cover.

also- parrots get very nervous per your hands.   when you go near the cage keep your hands to yourself-  almost behind your back.

They come to you on their own time.

I was bit 3x- and lemme say it is ALWAYS the owners fault- PERIOD.

Yay! You've got a shredder. Aren't they fun? ;)

Making toys out of wood, rope, sisal, rawhide, or other natural things is probably going to be the least expensive thing for you. The cost of ready made toys is kind of outrageous, given what they're made from, and it appears you new friend will be doing his or her best at getting you to spend money.

I've got two destructo-keets that are currently involved in a shredding project on all of their perches. I'm making book on which one of the perches will fail first and, if I'm lucky, I'll be around to see if they fall like Wile E Coyote did in the Road Runner cartoons.

My parrot passed away this past winter.

I miss him at times.

I donated him to a taxidermist to have stuffed.     He would have wanted that.

Check freecyle-- ebay- and thrift stores.

There is no reason to buy new stuff.    Not for toys. (for birds)

First, I'm sorry to hear about your feathered friend PA. It's not easy losing a member of the family, even if they may have been a bit too mischievous at times.

I would be leery about picking up used bird toys second-hand. If they were overstock items still in their unopened packages, that's one thing. But, with previously used stuff, there's just no way to know if they were ever properly cleaned or sterilized to prevent the spread of birdie bugs. I wouldn't risk it.

(imho)

I agree with this. Way too big of a risk for me.

I'm not new to birds, in fact I have had birds all of my life. We also have another Cockatoo...a Goffins. This is my first BIG Too though and I am just amazed at the speed he can destroy these toys. I've never had another bird who can do it so fast. It really is literally less than an hour from start to finish.

Some birds are lovers, some are singers. Others just make you laugh your ass off with their antics. Then there are those... possessed, if you will... that seemingly take great joy in showing off how fast they can tear through stuff.

Right now the keets are squawking because I took out a rawhide tree this morning. They were literally tearing it apart much more quickly than I thought they should. So, the toy is sitting behind a glass door in a cabinet next to their perches, right where they can see it but cannot get to it.

Call it sappa's revenge but I'm enjoying this. >:-)

Thank you Sap.

A parrot is a special kind of bird.    They each have their own personality.  mine would get all excited when I counted silver.  he knew the difference between silver and regular coins!  lol.

I dont miss cleaning the cage.   A large bird needs a whole room- and they enjoy watching their owner.  I found it best to have him in view of a few different rooms.

One day- I would like another parrot.  But I am thinking- I would prefer to be moved into the next house- that could be many years away tho.

i can always pick the parts of a song where the bird would pipe up.

Mine loved to chew wood.

Of course they want to be on the highest perch.

I also would change his stuff around to give him something to do.

I have a cat now- which I inherited.   so she is my world these days.

Oh, since he likes to shred stuff - have you given him popped popcorn?

Is he masturbating yet?  If not,  get with hunky on what you can do to encourage it.

Erin did you get my other email?

Hugh was a birdsitter (oh, H was my psycho ex) for a hyacinth macaw... he went to the salvation army, got some cheap chairs, and busted them up for her to beak. Of course a hyacinth can break brazil nuts no problem, so you can imagine...

Start cruising garage sales for stuff! What kind of too is this and DANG!!

LOL.

I have a nice hole in one of my stairs from the parrot.

I had to stop letting him out when he started to refuse to go back in the cage.  He flew into the tv which was off- as he thought he could just fly thru it.

So I decided the stress was too much on him.
