pahunkboy -> Umm- I have a tough task ahead (8/19/2010 9:38:45 AM)

I most likely need a root canal.

Any advice?

we are doing 2 caps and as it turns out the one root is bad.  I asked if this can wait 6 months she said- not likely.   She gave my a rx for pennicillin and said do not take it unless you need it.

How does one get a good price?

What IS a good price?

for now- I just cant focus on this.   It was 2 hours of drilling today.

A dentist wrote a prescription for antibiotics that you "might" need sometime within the next 6 months. leaving it up to you to determine when you need it? That right there would have me looking for a new dentist.

Rob a bank... a BIG one..In my area the root canal usually is around $650 but the crowns are the real expense.

Ok- it is a Molar- tooth 14.

I called 2 places so far.     $840, and $752.

A cleaning and exam here can run $200!

At this point- $650 would be doable.   Not jump and down happy- but- the price to pay to keep the tooth.

That's not a bad price, here they run $950-$1000.00 each. Sometimes you can find a dental school clinic for less money if you are close to a college.

Too bad you are so far from the Mexican border, we can get it done (with crown) over there for $250-300. One thing you might try is to simply ask for a discount, especially if you will pay it off in cash. Dentists are often happy to accept 80-90% if they know they won't have to bill you.

The bolded part freaks me out-ya sure it wasn't an RX for pain meds?  Penicillin aint zactly a "if you think you need it kind of drug.

That said, dentists are evil, the right hand of satan, sadistic mean persons (said as I run my tongue over the stitches in my gums and recall the lil house of horror I was in yesterday at this time).

I am certain of the med.

She drilled into the tooth and seen it- there is also an xray.

I have had 8 broken bones and 2 knee surgeries. None of them were as painfull as the tooth ache I once had before my root canal. Get it done or you will regret it big time.

Can only agree to it, get tooth problems sorted before they become a real problem. What sometimes people don't realise is that tooth problems can lead to problems in other parts of the body (don't have the time tonight to google it, though but followed once a real interesting debate about it on the radio - a good debate, not a rubbish debate - and also know a guy who avoided to go to the dentist all or most of his life following which it effected his body big time with agony once his teeth could not wait any longer to receive treatment).

Since the wonderful dentist said you "might" need one.  Get some dental insurance.  Easily done.  Search the net.  I've got some links on my pc somewhere.  You can get it for 7-8 dollars a month.  Dump it after you no longer need it.

That is an idea.

I have to phone tomorrow the one that wasnt in.  I think he will have the best price- when I was there- I seen they did take some plan.

thornhappy -> RE: Umm- I have a tough task ahead (8/19/2010 3:55:06 PM)

Sometimes folks will give you antibiotics if they think you may develop an abscess.

Hunk, it's something to be fixed as soon as you can string the money together.  I had a cousin let one go too long and she went through multiple rounds of antibiotics, had a crown and root canal, only to end up with an abscess and having her tooth pulled.  It was a hellacious amount of money.  You can get bone erosion and seriously ill, especially since I think that molar is in your upper jaw.

Got a cheaper alternative.
Fly to AZ...Y_ma.  (by the way my _ key is toast on my comp_ter).  Have passport in hand.  Go to Los Algodones Mexico.  Have my dentist make appointment with root canal specialist.  That will cost approximately $270.  Then go back to his office to have impressions made.  Two days later go back to my dentist.  Have 2 new crowns installed for $360 for both.  Get a vacation and dental work taken care of for less than it will cost with American dentists.  Cost is $630 + airline ticket + cheap motel and food.  Shop online for the best deals in motels and air fare.

Lack of being able to afford American dentists led my teeth to get really bad.  My Mexican dentist over the past 4 years has removed 6 roots with no teeth attached ($40 each).  Have had many cavities filled ($40 each).  I've had 2 root canals ($270 each.  I've had 3 dental implants ($500 each).  I have 5 crowns ($180 each)  I get teeth cleaned for $20.  All the care I have gotten is all great!!

DarlingSavage -> RE: Umm- I have a tough task ahead (8/19/2010 8:28:19 PM)

SafeGuard dental is EXCELLENT!  And it only costs about $100/yr!  But I agree with someone else on here, if that dentist said you MIGHT need the antibiotics, they clearly don't know what they're doing.  You WILL need the antibiotics.
