I am skeptical of any group that claims to know the future.

Whether that group is the church or the Nostradamus fan club.

I still have my canned food storage from Y2K.

Seriously, have people stopped to think that maybe the world won't end, just humans? Considering there would be no more Jerry Springer would it really be that horrible?

Ok-  I expect the force of gravity to be effected.   So think of it as a major full moon.

Beyond that- I doubt it is the end.

Uhhh.........weren't you spouting this theory a few short months ago?

Or did Alex change his mind, and of course yours as well.

I love that show!  And I've used that quote several times, but no one ever knows what I'm talking about.  I was so happy to find the video so I could post that from now on!  That show is hilarious, though!

Wow, Mister Rodgers is talking about doomsday. I saw this coming years ago!!!

Yeah alright, now that that is out of my system...

quote:

There is legitimate research being done with some of the best technical hypothesis being considered and finally shown on Science channel...I think.

... [stuff skipped] ...

One technical prediction is that earthlings at some time may well be able to see a spot on the sun...called Venus. This it is said will offer the best view of Venus from earth in all of these 1000's of years.

.. [more stuff skipped] ...

So it is according to present science, very unlikely anything globally or even on a continental basis will change with the most likely exception being a possible small shift in weather patterns, a small change in sunlight patterns, flooding, winds drought etc.

So where is all this stuff coming from? As I haven't been following the science relating to the potential end of the world coming I'm a bit lost. How about some references?

I'm actually kinda curious, I love science porn.

For all the snark on this page, the OP is not making this up. That doesn't necessarily mean that I believe that the world will end, nor a 'new age' for mankind, but here's a decent jumping-in point if you want to know more. I also watched a documentary a few months back, but I don't recall the name off the top of my head.

Effects will be world-wide but quite mild in many places. The effects of the planetary alignment will likely effect gravitational pulls of the planets...each having some and thus our magnetic field. The overall effects of which though, being attenuated by the great distances between the planets.

That may change the forces and structure of our very important and protective magnetic field. That may mean that we may lose some of it protection from the sun's influence on weather and because the suns energy has electronic potential, could effect communications, satellites etc....so they are at risk. That may be about all there is.

Here's a serious answer.

(This is usually where I rant about the poor science education in the US).

The force Venus would exert on us is about 1.13x10^18 N.  The sun exerts a force of about 3.3x10^22 N.  That's a difference of 4 magnitudes (a factor of 10,000).  Venus is gonna have a wee tiny bit of effect on earth compared to the sun.

Venus does not effect our space weather.  Sunspots, solar flares, and coronal hole hi-speed streams do, however.  There's a lot of info about that at www.sec.noaa.gov.

I swear, there are a lot of people in America (less so in Europe) that have to have some apocalyptic scheme hanging around.  This particular myth also occurred around 2000.

...fixed typos...

Engineer ? I am curious in what field. It is not important either that it offers what should be a healthy and real curiosity. Apparently it has not. But all seriousness aside...here are the competing positions kinkroids. The only mythology here is the ability to grasp concepts from the written word and numbers. This has been predicted by the Romans, the Chinese and the Mayan's.

What happens ?  It has been said a complete alingment of the planets...some say no there will not be such an alignment and most of that alignment occurs regularly and the rest is bunk.

First, Venus is a side note...and the view we should get is only a bonus.

However, the gravity you describe is as measured under non-aligned conditions. We'll get a much more powerful chance on 12/21/12...so we are told.

So at least according to many astronomers and mathematicians...this is the case.

Some are saying there will be no changes at all...I hope they are right.

We are told...that's all, that the planets in our solar system will be at some point on 12/21/12, vertically, horizontally, geometrically aligned on the same plane and axis.

This we know from using that rudimentary methodology otherwise known as mathematics. The same methodology we use for all of those other astronomical 'mythology' like years and orbits and eclipses...ya know, mythology like that. So who do you believe ? To what end does any interested observer want to suggest such a celestial phenomenon is not going to occur and if so...what does the math really show for 12/21/12 ?

What will happen ? Science tells us...we don't know. Hence these two previous sentences:

Ok, nothing about how the world is going to end. Not only is the world not going to 'end' but it won't matter that you were right.

Otherwise, let's get a few important things in first. According to the science, it is not very likely at all that there will be anything like a world-wide, natural apocalypse.

We ok now ? Good.

What science that we do know presents a number of possibilities about which we can only truly speculate. From what we do know that is present in all of our solar buddies is a set of universal forces otherwise known as gravity and magnetism.

The resulting interaction of these forces subject to the aforementioned attenuation offered by the distances involved yields a limitation on our speculation. That limitation is as yet not entirely known because science...doesn't know.

For example, when the planets are aligned there may be effects on the gravity and the magnetic fields of both immediate bodies meaning for us Mars, earth and Venus all aligned may cause changes to all 3. Then just for fun, let's add a 4th & 5th...Mercury and Jupiter. Now our current measurements become potentially much less conclusive.

More science tells us that any distortion might result in the effects I described. The scientists believe that the threat is plausible enough to suggest communications and satellites should be taken offline for a day.

That's it.

World-wide weather problems ? Maybe ? Shift of our axis ? Most doubt it. Changes in subduction ? Maybe. If all true ? Lottsa problems...if, IF there is going to be that complete system alignment.

That's why the title Doomsday coming (?)

No, that's at the closest distance, which would have the most effect.

The same thing happened in the '80s, and my astronomer boyfriend just about died laughing when he heard that such an alignment would have any effect on earth.  The force goes down by the inverse square law; think how far away the other planets are!  They will have no significant effect on us.  The sun and moon has the most effect on us.

I'd really like to see who's stating that 1) this conjunction will occur, and 2) what proof they have of all these cultures saying the same thing.  Nothing special happens the day after 12/12/12; the long count simply starts over again.  BTW, there are a lot of current-day Mayans who are totally pissed about this foolishness.

The idea that science doesn't know what will happen is incorrect.  Orbital mechanics tells you where the planets will be at a given point in time.  The gravitational forces can be calculated (and they are insignificant).  I sure as hell don't know where the scientists are that say they can't predict those factors.  It's especially bogus that satellites will be affected.  I mean, bat shit crazy bogus.

The first two are bogus, and the moon has a far greater influence on subduction events.

As to my major, I have a BSEE, and a MSEngineering.  The concepts above were covered in my high school physics class, and then repeated in the standard college-level physics classes that scientists and engineers take.

As I understand it, the alignment of Venus with the sun is due to happen around the summer solstice, not December.

The alignment of Earth, the sun, and galactic center on a single plane, happens on 12/21/12, at 11:11.

Also, there will be a full solar eclipse (Nov, 13).

Personally, I’m awaiting the return of the ‘city of gold’ I saw back in March of ‘08’. I’m not picky about when it happens.

I think we past that already, didn't we?  According to this chart sourced to the World Bank, we past that number in 2008.
