Have you ever looked out into the night sky and seen the Milky Way Galaxy? Did you notice the obvious tilt? It is at a steep angle to the straight line of the horizon. Why?
It turns out that our solar system appears to belong to another galaxy that is colliding with the Milky Way. This was recently discovered when scientists were trying to figure (mathematical) sources for "dark matter" that would account for forces we can measure but not see visibly. Using near-infrared (wavelengths of light outside human eye and optical telescopes) a huge sister galaxy circling the Milky Way was discovered. It's called the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (SGR for short).

No, the Sun is not and never was part of another galaxay. The Sag DEG (the real abbreviation) (means Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy) is on the far side of the Milky Way from here and is still around 100,000,000 years away from colliding with the Milky Way.

BTW the Sag DEG is not a huige galaxy. its actually very small as these things go (that explains why it is so close but only confirmed in 1994). Astronomers are not in the habit of calling things dwarf galaxies because they are huge.

Pretty much everything else you wrote is wrong as well.

If they are wrong, I am happy but two things.

Wiki:
The Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy (SagDEG) is an elliptical loop-shaped satellite galaxy of the Milky Way galaxy. The main cluster which, in 1994, was the first to be discovered, is roughly 10,000 light years in diameter, and is currently about 70,000 light-years from Earth and traveling in a polar orbit at a distance of about 50,000 light-years from the core of the Milky Way.

Our solar system is almost the equivalent of a planet satellite as we are on the very edge of the Milky Way. Seems our orbits could come together and present something. But I am now beginning to think all of these distances are just far too great for anything to really make a difference. That's what I hadn't researched until now.

I am wondering now if any of these calenders predict dates beyond 12/2012.

The Sun is about 25k light years out from the center of the Milky Way on the inner side of the Orion arm. This places us about half way to the edge of galaxy (the milky way is about 100k light years across). We are not on the edge of the galaxy by any reasonable meaning of the word edge.

Now consider the Sag DEG. It's 70k light year away from us but orbits the center of the milky way by only 50k ly. The only way that is possible is if it is on the far side of the Milky way from us. Which is what I told you above.

A couple of things that have popped out at me are these: Everyone is talking about things like a polar shift. Well, yes and no. The Magnetic Poles shift on occassion. This isn't expected to happen for like another 400,000 years.

Another thing is this alignment of planets. I've heard the planets are going to align with the sun and the sun is going to align with the center of the galaxy. Well, as an amature astronomer, I can say with a good deal of certainty that the planets align fairly often. As to the sun aligning with the center of the galaxy, that's called the Winter Solstice.

quote:

The Maya calendar doesn't end in 2012, as some have said, and the ancients never viewed that year as the time of the end of the world, archaeologists say.

Some sky-watchers believe 2012 will close with a "galactic alignment," which will occur for the first time in 26,000 years (for example, see the Web site Alignment 2012).

In this scenario, the path of the sun in the sky would appear to cross through what, from Earth, looks to be the midpoint of our galaxy, the Milky Way, which in good viewing conditions appears as a cloudy stripe across the night sky.

Some fear that the lineup will somehow expose Earth to powerful unknown galactic forces that will hasten its doom—perhaps through a "pole shift" (see above) or the stirring of the supermassive black hole at our galaxy's heart.

Others see the purported event in a positive light, as heralding the dawn of a new era in human consciousness.

NASA's Morrison has a different view.

"There is no 'galactic alignment' in 2012," he said, "or at least nothing out of the ordinary."

He explained that a type of "alignment" occurs during every winter solstice, when the sun, as seen from Earth, appears in the sky near what looks to be the midpoint of the Milky Way.

Many scholars who've pored over the scattered evidence on Maya monuments say the empire didn't leave a clear record predicting that anything specific would happen in 2012...

Aveni, the archaeoastronomer, said the scenario is not meant to be read literally—but as a lesson about human behavior.

He likens the cycles to our own New Year period, when the closing of an era is accompanied by frenetic activities and stress, followed by a rebirth period, when many people take stock and resolve to begin living better.

In fact, Aveni says, the Maya weren't much for predictions.

And the biggest thing that bothers me is this, I've seen several shows on the subject and has anyone else noticed that during these "Documentaries" the only people doing the talking are people with books out on the subject? I've not seen ONE scientist on a program.

I have a couple of differnt links for articles that I quoted from:

Next clue - the current 11 year Sun Spot Cycle has passed the minimum (sun spot activity should have begun over a year ago and has not for the first time ever).

Actually this is not entirely accurate. During the period from 1645 to 1715, the Sun entered a period of low activity now known as the Maunder Minimum, when through several 11- year periods the Sun displayed few if any sunspots. Of particular interest is that this period of inactivity corresponds closely to one of the coldest periods of the so-called "Little Ice Age" in Europe, a time of long, cold winters.
