Actually, this isn't a new story. Somebody just dug it up to add fuel to the fire. Here's a piece from a couple of months ago. Note the comments. The third one is a hoot...

A Disgruntled Republican

Personally, I do not favor becoming involved in what I am inclined to view as the functional equivalent of kennel squabbles. They are of no consequence. The Constitution will not be set aside.

With very few exceptions, the "normal" majority you claim exists are staying very very quiet.

Im finding it a bit hypocritical for some to insist that the christian right is setting out to kill and maim, but its only a few se;ect muslims who have done the same.

Fast reply, so this might have been covered...

Seriously? We're worried about a "mosque" masquerading as a "community center" two damn blocks from "Ground Zero"????

First, "Ground Zero" is a stupid, stupid, stupid term. Did I say it was stupid?

Secondly, all religion is bullshit, and the sooner it gets out of public life, the better.

Do you consider yourself part of the "religious right" that likes to fuse politics and religion?

Well I am believe in God and I lean to the right. But I think politics and religion should be kept seperate. Does that answer your question?

Well I know lots and lots of people on the right who do not feel the way you claim they do. Proof enough for me. Now on the other hand you claim that all the people on the right feel this way. Can you show me proof that they do? And will this lack of proof stop you from claiming it? I guess we will have to wait and see. Please understand if I don't put any money on you stopping at this point.

I didnt claim that all of them felt the same way, I said that the so-called "normal" people who are not protesting these Muslim projects are being very very quiet, with very few exceptions.

Considering protests of any kind, pro or con get news coverage, AND considering the conflict that would arise if two opposing groups were protesting at the same site, you would have thought there would be a record of such protests and or conflicts.

In order for the GOP and conservatives to win elections they have to have something to claim you should be afraid of... As long as a political party and its base can build on hate and intolerance this country will never get past racism and religious intolerance... The right wing conspiracy theorists are just building on what the conservative and republican main stream speakers and politicians are preaching.

From eastern Long Island to more rural upstate areas, House Democrats have been opposing the construction of a $100 million Islamic center two blocks from the World Trade Center site.

As usual, Democrats are spineless on this.

The Right raises their wedge issue, throws gasoline on it, and the Dems run to appease voters.

We need third parties. Ones that actually take meaningful stands and propose workable solutions, not the PACs we have now.

All for a Third Party, One that splits the differences though not a party that makes the current liberal Democrats look more centrist, nor a party that makes the current religious right Republicans look more centrist. I want a party that actually is more center, centrist right on fiscal issues and centrist left on most social issues.

BTW I find most of the protests against mosques to be based on ignorance and fear, but that is not limited to the right wingers.
Firebrand preachers in all religions get the press and get the attention and they tend to be the models of what we outsiders believe those people (whoever they are) to be like.

Tough to prove that your mosque is not going to be one of those that creates the next American jihadist group that is going to end up on the evening news for plotting something. Equally tough to prove your church will not be the next one to produce the next abortion clinic bomber.

Trust is built only by exposure, you can't build it without sharing time together, and you can't expect the other will be willing to trust you fully without that time being invested.

I don't think think either party originated the issue, but they're both certainly making use of it.

Agreed. It's where most of the country is, after all.

But it's hard to fire up "flaming moderates," unfortunately. People are going to have to stand up and take responsibility themselves, interacting proactively, vs. waiting to react to whatever the extremes throw at them next.

I agree with both of you. In particular, your last point takes note of the fact that the kinds of displays we are seeing are driven by emotion. Moderates, almost by definition, are not going to be found among such people. Moreover, the attention that these outbursts garner in the news, and the shameful way they are capitalized upon by politicians, promotes the impression that responding emotionally to every damn thing somehow reflects "really caring," when in fact it is mostly self-centered and juvenile. In my view, this is profoundly unfortunate. No good end is likely to come where level heads do not prevail.

Your problem here is the majority of moderates may also feel the center is too soon...hell to be in the minority again huh. You are as radical in your beliefs as any right wing fanatic.

No understanding on your part...it is either your way or everyone who disagrees with you are brown shirt fascists. Why can't you at least understand the feelings on this center? Even many Muslims are questioning the wisdom of the placement of the center at this time.

Yes we all agree they have a right to build but is it a wise choice on their part? The Constitution says they can and they will so why do you insist on rubbing it in everyone’s face with your shallow righteousness.

Huh?

You are reading much more than what is there, and you are attributing positions I don't hold.

Frankly, you seem to be doing so from a preconceived take on all this, shooting at whatever might threaten that take.

I at first thought you had mistakenly responded to the wrong poster. Then I realized you were just plain mistaken.

Perhaps I did come down on you too hard for that I apologise... but you know the thrust of this thread and the reason for it. You allowed without comment extreme views against those against the building of the center... Therefore I can only assume you agree with them.

There have always been disputes about the building of churches in many areas...not just Muslim alone... The only reason for this thread is because of the dispute over the Center in New York. If my commenting about it is off topic then why did you allow others to comment without saying something.

Singling me out is not going to work simply because you don't agree with my stand. BUT I should not have been so smart assed in my reply.

Butch
