Well I am believe in God and I lean to the right. But I think politics and religion should be kept seperate. Does that answer your question?

Yes it does...try not to take offense then, when someone says "religious right" they don't mean someone who is both religious and right leaning, but rather the voting bloc and group of legislators who see the Bible as inspiration for secular law.

This was a bit disheartening:

Fast reply, so this might have been covered...

Seriously? We're worried about a "mosque" masquerading as a "community center" two damn blocks from "Ground Zero"????

First, "Ground Zero" is a stupid, stupid, stupid term. Did I say it was stupid?

Secondly, all religion is bullshit, and the sooner it gets out of public life, the better.

Oh fuck LL now you gone and done it, I said the same in a couple different threads, even made sure to remind folks it was only my opinion, and boy, did I get lambasted.  Funny thing is I don't give a shit what any one else believes and I do not try to force any one to my point of view.  Yet I was the "bad guy" for stating I believe all religion to be bullshit.

No way! You insulted people's deepest beliefs, and they took it badly?! What a shock.

Sarcasm noted, but seriously the right of people to "freedom of religion", also inversely implies I have the right to be FREE FROM RELIGION.  No where did I ever attempt to "proselytize" my point of view.  I never once said anyone has to believe as I do.  If you believe in religion & god and it gives you comfort and strength, well good for you, I just don't believe the same.

Some people can not comprehend there might just be NOTHINGNESS after we shuffle off this mortal coil.  Some people need the "old book of Jewish fairy-tales" to live by.  I went through a pretty hard core "born again" period in my early teens, and when we were told to go hand out "tracts" in a Jewish "community / retirement" center I really began to rethink the whole Christianity gig.  Didn't take too long to conclude maybe Thomas Paine was right "my own church, is my own mind" and embrace intellectualism afterward.

My very best buddy is a hard core Irish Catholic, he and I have some very interesting discussions about religion.  The best part is we know before hand neither one of us will ever convert the other so the ensuing talks are as honest as can be.  Our mutual 'tude is one of, well either we will be worm food or we won't, neither one will know for certain until we are dead.

In order for the GOP and conservatives to win elections they have to have something to claim you should be afraid of, that is the cause for all your problems, and that is planning on destroying your way of life.

As long as a political party and its base can build on hate and intolerance this country will never get past racism and religious intolerance.

The right wing conspiracy theorists are just building on what the conservative and republican main stream speakers and politicians are preaching.

this says it all about the right

I tend to think that for any party to win elections, all they have to do is let the other side govern for a while.

Works that way cause the freaks on the ends are what drives the parties. They bitch the loudest, cry the most, moan incessantly until dumb shit politicians think the country is behind them.

Of course, 18 months into the debacle, they learn the country isn't behind them. The whining freaks are.

The simple lesson that neither Democrat nor Republican can seem to learn is that while the extremists are the most vocal, they're also painful around election time.

And oh, folks hanging off the left aren't getting much traction with the religious intolerance whine for the simple reason they've practiced it way too long.

Even dolts can see the hypocrisy. Kind of points out where freaks stand on the intellectual ladder when they can't see something dolts can.

That's ridiculous causal logic. Why not assume anything I don't compliment I oppose? It's just as silly.

The reason, Butch, is that I don't try to run the universe from my laptop. Many voices, many discussions, many posters, I'm one of them here and there from time to time. I have an actual life where I prefer to sink the majority of my time.

I didn't "single you out" at all--you came at me with a personal attack. That kinda made you stand out from the crowd.

Yes, I agree. It was nice to see that the facebook group set up to oppose them has almost twice as many members as they do. It was also nice to see the National Association of Evangelicals speak out against them, but I doubt they will listen.

I have no problem with them building their Mosque.  I hope that those building and worshipping in it have no problem when a gay bar catering to Muslim men is opened that serves pork.

Both establishments have the right to exist according to our laws.

Why would that make you happy? Do you think any of these ventures have any chance at being successful?

Americans love to hate their fellow Americans.

I know of many more people that have been hurt by Catholic Americans than Muslim Americans. I would not suggest putting up a treatment center for pedophiles next to a Catholic church.

Maybe that is something you might want to explore.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

He won't ever come out against it, because of the first ten words of that amendment, but you apparently think he will, or is even allowed to.  You  would be incorrect.  Despite the wording it applies to the executive branch as well as the legislative, and judicial branches.   To make any comment as a representative of the people is also a no-no, as then you get into the thorny issue of government sanctioning a religion.

I did not take the following oath on 22 December 1976, to go on "delayed enlistment" for shits and giggles:

I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

At this point there are many here on these message forums showing themselves to be "domestic enemies" of the United States.  It is a situation I do not take lightly.

Constitutionally,

Don't forget Article 6, clause 3: "The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."

I've seen a variety of politicians state that only Christians are fit for public office.

Not because they believe that. But because they are courting the "religious" vote.

As each year goes by, that vote keeps getting smaller and smaller.
