Toppingfrmbottom -> Can you make a version of tang drink mix at home but with out all the dyes? (8/24/2010 8:13:20 AM)

I basically like the semi tart orange taste, but man, I don't want all the dyes and additives an what not polluting my drink.

My health food store has an organic substitute. I don't know how you could make it on your own.

tropicalhoney, what's the name of the stuff your organic store sells?

I suppose you could take orange juice an put it in some kind of sparkling water if all you want is the orange flavor an the slight bite, with none of the dyes an stuff.

just chew on some vitamin c tablets!

When I lived in Mexico they had fizzy orange vita-C tabs you drop in water to make a drink.  Tasted a lot like tang with bubbles.  They were good.   I havent seen them in the US but they were made by US company.  I am sure they are around somewhere.

Winsome, or drop them into your water bottle.

topping, I don't remember the name, but the next time I go, I'll look for it. If I find it, I'll drop you a line. It's a funky store and they don't always have the same stuff, so I don't know if it will be there again or not.

What about dropping the vitamin C tablet in orange juice?

Tang is not carbonated.  What is wrong with experimenting with an orange juice and a lot of sugar like tang is?  However, I don't believe tang has real orange juice in it.

Orange flavor and lots of sugar.

DarkSteven -> RE: Can you make a version of tang drink mix at home but with out all the dyes? (8/25/2010 6:37:55 AM)

Yep.  Tang is basically sugar with fruit flavoring.  If you want to stave off diabetes, getting rid of Tang would be a good first step.

how about a glass of citric acid?

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Can you make a version of tang drink mix at home but with out all the dyes? (8/25/2010 9:25:22 AM)

I have thought about this, because I think about questions like this one... and since drinks like Tang, Wylers, etc are mainy sugar, citric acid, and flavoring, you are better off buying the commercial thing just because it is CHEAPER. The stuff is finely milled to dissolve and stay dissolved, chemists worked to keep the balance right, why mess with it?

If your objective is to flavor the water, I would go with extracts, like you find in the spice/baking section. NOT oils, those are different, and the concentrations will be hinky when you try to flavor waters.

sub4hire, no, it's not carbonated, but who knows you may like it carbonated, so there for seltzers and carbonated bases may prove a good base, even if it's not a traditional one.

Nothing wrong with that experimentation at all. I was actually planning to try some recipes I had found online for things like home made soda, and putting things like a bit of juice into water and stuff. It'd be harmless to put a bit of OJ into the water an see how it goes.

Yeah, I don't drink it very often, in fact before this week it had been litterally 5-10 years since I have had the stuff. But I do so love the orange bite and flavor of it, and  it'd be lovely to get that with out tons of sugar.  Perhaps I'd like the Vita C tabs someone else mentioned, and have good luck putting those in my water for that lovely orange flavor kick, with out the tons of sugar.

Make orangeade the same way you make fresh lemonade, only use oranges? Slice them, pitcher, water, ice cubes, sugar/sugar substitute, and try different amounts of each till you get the taste you want. You could probably get some orange extract they use for flavoring candy (in the grocery store with the other extracts like vanilla) and add a drop or two of that to get the orangey taste.

Oh, and I just remembered, orange-flavored Crystal Lite tastes a lot like Tang, I think. But you still get the artificial stuff in it.

winchymes Thank you:)

Yes, orange sunrise Crystal light was what sparked the renewed interest in Tang. A big thing of Tang one uses off of as needed, would be infinitely cheaper far as how far it goes, at only  a little under 2 dollars, than a box of individual serve sizes of Crystal light. Crystal light is a little over 2 bucks here, and if you want the bigger sizes for making a quart or gallon of the stuff, it's 5 dollars.

I'll try making orangeade, it sounds yummy!

edited because I typed bit, not big

Why not unsweetened orange kool-aid and some nutrasweet or stevia mixed in?  I make a lot of the jar gifts through out the year to compliment the real gifts.  Last winter I had a recipe for an orange tea.  It was made with orange kool-aid and fake tea crystals.

People loved it.

You're still getting all the dyes and shit I wanted to get away from, and why I'm not just using Tang.

I really thought I posted this, but now I think I may have posted it somewhere else, and of course it will make no sense.  So here I go again.

Orange juice, Squeeze (mmmm) a lemon, and then pineapple juice.  I hope this works for you.  I agree with you on all the dyes and things.
