So people are not allowed to change their minds about something? If someone is against gays and then realizes later in life that they are wrong, they are not allowed to admit it without being labeled a hypocrite? What is the point in trying to educate these idiots if we are going to bash them when they admit they were wrong? Like I said before, you really need to let go of that hate. It's not helping anyone.

I misread the following (unclear) sentence;

"Former RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie and Mehlman's longtime friend called Mehlman's coming-out "significant," but added that he remains opposed to gay marriage."

You still haven't supported your characterization of Mehlman as a 'right-wing gay basher'. Instead you changed the subject, as all good libs do.

I'll answer a couple of your questions in one post. Mehlman says that he will now work to support the right of gay marriage, however, his old friend Gillespie disputes it.
You are taking Gillespie's (friend) word instead of listening to what a person says about himself?

You asked me to show he is (was at least) right wing and a gay basher.

He was Chairman of the RNC. Therefore, he was the King of the Wing

Gay bashing. Anytime someone works to systematically remove a basic human right from a group of people, (There's really cool document that you should read sometime that says "...All men are created equal and are endowed by their creator with basic human rights. Among these are Life, Liberty and THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS...") I call that bashing them because being able to spend your life with a person you love is "pursuit of Happiness".

You call me a liberal because I'm calling out a hypocrite. It's just that the hypoctite happens to be a Republican I thought Conservatives were all about preserving the truth and libs were supposed to be liars and hypocrites?
Maybe you're coming out as a liberal?

I havent changed the subject, you just seem unable to follow it.

I'm quite happily unaware of where/when the right of homosexuals to marry has ever existed, if any where/when, but it certainly wasn't here.
Also, as far as I know, no adult people anywhere in the country are being prevented from spending their lives together. period.

Mr. Mehlman supported the Party and the President. Do you think there has ever been a party chair, a Presidential spokesman, anyone of that ilk who agreed with every policy his job required him to support?

I wish Mr Mehlman well; I'm sure that your bashing of him is the least of his worries.

Well, lets correct that...

In Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Washington, D.C., marriages for same-sex couples are legal and currently performed.

The Coquille Indian Tribe in Oregon also grants same-sex marriage

State which previously granted same-sex marriage licenses:

In California, same-sex marriages were performed between June 16, 2008, and November 4, 2008, after the California Supreme Court held the statutes limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples violated the state constitution; however, the California electorate then approved California Proposition 8, a voter initiative that made the ban part of California's constitution. The California Supreme Court upheld the voter-approved constitutional ban.[1] Proposition 8 was challenged in federal court in Perry v. Schwarzenegger. On August 4, 2010, a federal judge ruled that California's ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional,[2] and stayed his ruling.[3][4] On August 12, 2010, he ruled that marriages could resume on August 18, 2010, but the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit stayed the ruling pending appeal.[5][6]

States which recognize same-sex marriage but have not granted same-sex marriage licenses:

In New York, Rhode Island, and Maryland, same-sex marriages are recognized, but not performed.[7][8][9]

Federal law
The legal issues surrounding same-sex marriage in the United States are complicated by the nation's federal system of government. Traditionally, the federal government did not attempt to establish its own definition of marriage; any marriage recognized by a state was recognized by the federal government, even if that marriage was not recognized by one or more other states (as was the case with interracial marriage before 1967 due to anti-miscegenation laws). With the passage of the Defense of Marriage Act ("DOMA") in 1996, however, a marriage was explicitly defined as a union of one man and one woman for the purposes of federal law. (See 1 U.S.C. § 7.)

DOMA has been under challenge in the federal courts, and on July 8, 2010, Judge Joseph Tauro of the District Court of Massachusetts held that the denial of federal rights and benefits to lawfully married Massachusetts same-sex couples under the DOMA is unconstitutional, under the Tenth Amendment to the US Constitution.[12][13] This ruling is currently under a stay, but would affect residents residing within the federal district that covers Massachusetts if the stay is lifted. If this decision is appealed and affirmed, the ruling could apply elsewhere in the U.S. For now, no act or agency of the federal government—except within the state of Massachusetts if the stay is lifted—may recognize same-sex marriage.

According to the federal government's Government Accountability Office (GAO), more than 1,138 rights and protections are conferred to U.S. citizens upon marriage by the federal government; areas affected include Social Security benefits, veterans' benefits, health insurance, Medicaid, hospital visitation, estate taxes, retirement savings, pensions, family leave, and immigration law.

However, many aspects of marriage law affecting the day to day lives of inhabitants of the United States are determined by the states, not the federal government, and the Defense of Marriage Act does not prevent individual states from defining marriage as they see fit.

The United States Supreme Court in 1972 dismissed Baker v. Nelson, a case originating in Minnesota, "for want of a substantial federal question". The Defense of Marriage Act, as well as marriage laws in 45 states, could be affected by the outcome of Perry v. Schwarzenegger, a case challenging the validity of California's Proposition 8 under the United States Constitution.[14]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage_in_the_United_States

That should bring you up to date.

Did you miss the use of the Present tense in Tazzy's post? I really want to be snarky and tell you that you will cover that in 4th grade, but I'll instead point out that there's nothing wrong with repenting hatred. It's not practicing what one preaches that is so disgustingly hypocritical. You know, like that snake Gingrich going on about "Family Values" while he dumps a wife with cancer, on her deathbed, for some fucking snake trollop Young Republican. Or what that shitbag McCain did to HIS first wife.

I was not responding to one of tazzy's posts, so the tense she used really has nothing to do with my reply. I understand that you don't see anything wrong with hatred, you spew enough of it on here. As to the rest of your post, it's nothing but a lame excuse to bash on a few people from the right. Totally off topic and not worth a response. Now was there a point you were trying to make here, other than the fact that you can't follow a conversation, or are you just trying to get as many snarky comments as you can in one day?

He didnt change his mind, his mind was made up long ago, per his own words. What he changed was his decision to stay hidden about his private life.

"My guest Jeff Sharlet recently traveled to Uganda to meet David Bahati, the Member of Parliament who introduced the draconian anti-homosexuality bill. Bahati is a leader of the Ugandan parliament's branch of The Fellowship, which is connected to the secretive American evangelical group, The Fellowship, that is also known as The Family.

Sharlet is the author of the bestseller "The Family," about this fundamentalist group and the influential senators and congressmen affiliated with it. Sharlet's follow-up book, "C-Street" will be published in September.

He went to Uganda at the invitation of David Bahati. Sharlet's article, "Straight Man's Burden: The American Roots of Uganda's Anti-Gay Persecutions," is published in the September issue of "Harper's." Sharlet is a contributing editor of the magazine. He's also an assistant professor of English at Dartmouth College.

Jeff Sharlet, welcome back to FRESH AIR. Before we talk about your trip to Uganda, just give us a little refresher course on the anti-homosexual bill and where it stands now.

Professor JEFF SHARLET (English, Dartmouth College): Well, the anti-homosexuality bill was introduced in 2009. It's a bill that essentially seeks to eradicate homosexuality from Uganda and become a model for the rest of Africa. Homosexuality is already illegal but it would make the penalties much stiffer, including death penalty for whats described in the bill as Serial Offender, and that can be someone who has gay sex more than once.

That also is aggravated homosexuality, if you're HIV-positive and you have sex, even with another consenting adult and you're aware of things - death penalty. If you have sex with someone who's disabled - again, consenting adult doesnt matter - death penalty. There's also a life sentence for a one time act. There's a seven-year sentence for the promotion of homosexuality, and a three-year sentence for failure to report a known homosexual - whether it's a relative or anything with that - and you have 24 hours to do that."

So, what has this to do with gay-hating Rethugs?

"Every year, right before Uganda's Independence Day, the government holds a National Prayer Breakfast modelled on the Family's event in Washington. Americans, among them Republican Senator Jim Inhofe of Oklahama, former attorney general John Ashcroft - both longtime Family men and outspoken antigay activists - and Pastor Rick Warren, are a frequent attraction at the Ugandan Fellowship's weekly meetings. "He said homosexuality is a sin and that we should fight it," Bahati recalled of Warren's visits.

Inhofe and Warren, like most American fundamentalists, came out in muted opposition to Uganda's gay death penalty, but they didn't dispute the motive behind it: the eradication of homosexuality. The may disagree on the means, favoring a "cure" rather than killing, but not the ends."

From the Christian Science Monitor:

"On whether Bush's call for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage will divide the party:"The president's position - his goal - has not changed. What has changed is the means to accomplish that goal.... When [the Defense of Marriage Act] is called into question because of decisions that say the law is no longer operative, all you can do to keep the principle going forward is the constitutional amendment.""
The right wing of the Republican party has often declared that homosexuals were a threat to society and marriage (which is weird, since I know very few people who were divorced due to homosexuals.)

I would say the ones on the left who shot down prop 8 in CA think it's a threat also, but go ahead and fixate on the ones from the right.

How many (percentage) on the left voted to ban it?  I had the impression out here that it was overwhelming on the right.  The right generally has the opinion that gays are a threat to society on the whole and marriage in particular.  They think they are unfit parents, unfit teachers, and have an "agenda" to convert children in school.

This comes directly from right-wing websites and the RNC platform in Texas.

I always thought it ironic that folks declare marriage is one man and one woman.  They usually base this on the Bible.

However, the Bible says you can have up to 4 wives (sound familiar?) and several concubines.

Enough that it didn't pass. If I remember correctly, they said it was one of the highest voter turnouts because of Obama and sure enough he got a good majority of the voters in CA. Too bad those same voters were not for gay marriage. Now do you really believe they were all right wingers and they voted against prop 8 but still voted a democrat into office?

Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. Never saw the number 4 mentioned anywhere.
