Saudi couple hammer 24 nails into Sri Lankan maid

COLOMBO (Reuters) - A Saudi couple tortured their Sri Lankan maid after she complained of a too heavy workload by hammering 24 nails into her hands, legs and forehead, officials said on Thursday.

Nearly 2 million Sri Lankans sought employment overseas last year and around 1.4 million, mostly maids, were employed in the Middle East. Many have complained of physical abuse or harassment.

Someone should tell the Saudia- sometimes referred to as "the keepers of the faith" that they just don't know jack shit about Islam.

This breaks my heart because I know first hand how prevelant this is in these countries.  Most people know that my ex-husband is from Sri Lanka, and I lived there for part of the time that we were married.  Many of these ladies who go abroad to work for people overseas are very innocent and very mild mannered women, who work very long days, and send the money they make back to their families in SL.  When I lived there, the maids and nannies that were employed by my in-laws were extremely well cared for, and considered it a blessing to work for a family that not only expected good work by their employees, but compensated them well, and did lots of extra things to give them comforts they were not used to.  Taking care of your domestic help is an investment in wonderful service for your family (not all that different from the lifestyle we on this site partake in). 

I don't know that a particular religion can be blamed for the sheer evil that some people perpetrate against these ladies who have traveled far from home, only to do a job that will provide earnings that can be used by their families of origin.  I know that some of the house maids used to tell me about the "bad people" they worked for overseas (various countries) and even in SL.  It makes me sick that this poor woman in the news article was treated so horribly, and I can only pray that the doctors in SL are able to repair the physical damage that was done and that maybe one day, the emotional damage will begin to heal.

Actually, just not enough education wherever you're from.

In your own past, people have been tortured far worse, and have drawn some pretty impressive crowds in the process.

The day you expect Africa to have the engineering skills and equipment to deal with their own shit without foreign aid, I may lend some credence to the notion that you can reasonably expect the Middle East to suddenly undergo the same changes as the West in a fraction of the time (practically overnight). Until then, you can pretty much shove your comprehension of their culture into one of those holes on the x-ray, and then pull the nail back in over you, or admit you hadn't thought this through for even a fraction of a second more than it took your gut to say "yowza!"

If you want prejudice, ignorance, and so forth to go away, or tolerance, understanding and forgiveness to become a worldwide way of life, I suggest you start by cleaning out your own closet, because those skeletons are piled pretty deep, and showing as such. You may not have the benefit of perspective, but you clearly have Internet access, and can choose to remedy that problem.

Care to talk about Eastern Europe (secular), Africa (varies) or Israel (jewish) in this context?

Saudi Arabia has more money. And prefers them in the home, rather than the brothels.

First, I reject the notion of excusing evil by the tactic of drawing false moral equivalency to other evils which may or may not exist. Pleas stop with the liberal strawman/equivalency crap as a way of whitewashing Islam.

Second, this story is very different. It is one of religiously-based violence condoned by the state. You and I both know that only happens in an Islamic context.

I'm still waiting to hear about the Nai victims of terrorism Has to be more entertaining than this weak defense of Saudi barbarism.

Uh. I know no such thing. My ancestors didn't do it in the name of Allah. Hell, they didn't do it in the name of Odin, either. They just did it because it kept the servants in line, and discouraged uprising-issues. In the modern era, we don't condone it, but we aren't doing a very good job at preventing it, either. It's not legal, but police aren't generally assigned to it, except on a case by case basis, after the charges have been filed, which is rarely.

Anyway, you can start by substantiating the notion that it is condoned, rather than being a neglected problem, if you want to cover the matter.
