TheHeretic -> Oikophobia (8/28/2010 10:12:45 AM)

We have been needing a good word for this.

Oikophobia:
An extreme and immoderate aversion to the sacred and the thwarting of the connection of the sacred to the culture of the West appears to be the underlying motif of oikophobia; and not the substitution of Judeo-Christianity by another coherent system of belief. The paradox of the oikophobe seems to be that any opposition directed at the theological and cultural tradition of the West is to be encouraged even if it is "significantly more parochial, exclusivist, patriarchal, and ethnocentric".

This nice new word is brought to us by James Taranto at the WSJ. He's bringing it up in the context of the mosque controversy, but the term is going to be useful well beyond that.

StrangerThan -> RE: Oikophobia (8/28/2010 11:00:09 AM)

I can see this one appearing on one of those lists of overused words, especially since it so adequately defines the mindset of some folks hanging off the fringe.

popeye1250 -> RE: Oikophobia (8/28/2010 11:06:38 AM)

I forget who said it (Pat Buchanan?) but right after 9/11 they said that the quislings on the far left would be siding with al qeada and the muslims.

TheHeretic -> RE: Oikophobia (8/28/2010 11:07:34 AM)

I think so, Strange, and I don't see it as bad thing. If the solution to free speech used badly is even more speech, it's always nice to have another tool in the vocabulary. The WSJ article cites Krauthammer giving examples of other words that are high on the overused list

-- Resistance to the vast expansion of government power, intrusiveness and debt, as represented by the Tea Party movement? Why, racist resentment toward a black president.

-- Disgust and alarm with the federal government's unwillingness to curb illegal immigration, as crystallized in the Arizona law? Nativism.

-- Opposition to the most radical redefinition of marriage in human history, as expressed in Proposition 8 in California? Homophobia.

-- Opposition to a 15-story Islamic center and mosque near Ground Zero? Islamophobia.

Oikophobia

Oik? Sorry, wrong word for it. 'Homophobia' is the fear of homosexuality And Islamophobia, seems the fear of Islam. And that the word 'oik' means "— n derogatory , slang ( Brit ) a person regarded as inferior due to being ignorant, ill-educated. (World English Dictionary)

Now, which group do we know, in America that is both 'ignorant' and 'ill-educated'? The Tea Party Movement!

It fits rather well, since most Tea Party supports are pretty....round....like a pig; and pigs do say 'oik' 'oik' 'oik'.....I would have to say it fits pretty well.

And if you take this as anything but good, humor (which it is inteded as).....get a life. Or get out from cave.

So I guess a much more accurate discription of 'Oikophobia' is 'fear of stupid and under educated conservatives, fucking up American's future".

Hmmm. We seem to have struck a bit of a nerve here, Jo. You sound just like a homophobic declaring that it's just because them fa**ots do such disgusting stuff to each other.

I can see this being used to describe anyone who criticises christianity, regardless of other views.

More accurately IMO it applies to Weeaboo.

How many tea party rallies have you attended and where were they located?

Malkinius -> RE: Oikophobia (8/28/2010 2:45:29 PM)

Greetings joether.....

The following is to make a point, it has nothing to do with what I believe about any group anywhere. I am taking your own words and making a few very minor substitutions. Now how do your words sound to you? Modifications are done in italics so everyone will see them.

Three small changes. Your original words, my reversal to make the point that others were making. Unthinking, knee-jerk hatred of any group only says bad things about the speaker, not the ones they are insulting. How do you feel about those words now? By the way, no one so far has found anything humorous in your words.

Well done.

I would have spent half a dozen posts pointing it out but you did it brilliantly in one.

Hats off to you.

Thank you. <grins> This is off topic but relevant to what I did. Take the Christmas song Santa Clause is Coming to Town and change every reference from Santa to Torquemada. It gives the song a whole new meaning. No, I didn't create that one, I have just sung it for years.

Be well....

More flogging of the "liberal elite"...a term used since the Nixon administration.  50 years ago.

I have no problem with Christianity, but many on the right believe that only their brand of Christianity is "real" Christianity.  This comes from personal experience, not the "liberal elite press".

According to them, folks like the Dalai Lama, Mother Theresa (yep, Catholics are going to hell), etc. are going to hell, while folks like Hitler and Stalin could go to heaven if they'd accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior at the last minute.  (And yeah, that comes from personal experiences too.)

I'm paraphrasing here, mind you: "Progressivism and antiauthoritarianism aren't the result of Liberal Democracy; they are the cause."

Good point, Malkinius. But to make the point, you also, had to do the same thing. Does that not also make you, the same? Lets say for the moment, we both are correct. So what? Tommorow, and the days afterward, we'll still have people, doing largely, the same thing I did, and others, doing largely, the same thing you did. They are both right, and both wrong. Will you also call each and every one of them out, in a public manner? Will you do it, also, with those who share your same feelings and understanding of the topic?

We demonize each other, and what ever the topic was at the moment (which might not be the original for five pages previous). There is alot of pettiness and cheap jabs on both sides. I'm sure you could agree to that Malkinius. I think, one thing we (and I mean everyone), forgets: we're all BDSM'ers. BDSM has one constant element: passion. Should it surprise anyone, that alot of us on here, are passionate in many areas of our lives (not just politics)? The problem with passion (just like other strong emotions), is that it can sometimes over-ride reason and thinking. Hence, were the demonizing begins.

I'm not bashing you, Malkinius (or at least, would like you to understand, that's not my intention). You made a good point. I think you could have made a better point, if you didn't say anything after the quote of mine (and thus, doing the same thing I did). There was a moment you could have taught something very good. Just want to understand your thinking, and for you, to understand mine. Should I have posted it? Probably not. Should you have answered in your manner? Probably not either. Would I learn, not to do it in the future, if you had not posted? Probably not. I can only learn to do better, right? I believe it would be fair to equality ask, you extend this concept, across the board. Malkinius?

Why would Progressives side with AQ?

Why don't you stop pretending to be an MOR "Independent"? Everyone who reads your posts knows you are Far Right.
