Aneirin -> What do Americans like about Britain ? (8/28/2010 5:17:33 PM)

I was just wondering after a few pints of real ale, I.K.B to be precise, how many, I am unsure, but seeing as Britain is sort of allied to the US through history and present circumstance, I was wondering if the Americans liked their allie ( unsure of the correct spelling). To Americans, what do you like about us, the Brits ?

Further to that, what comes out of Britain that you admire, or could not do without product wise ?

English cheddars. Samuel Smith's ales. (actually, the US makes some truly world-class ales now) British rock (except that poof Morrisey). Miniskirts. Scones with Lemon Curd. The British Museum. Theatre in the West End. The Tube. English eccentricity. Ringo.
The Beatles Story at Albert Dock & the Magical Mystery Tour (bus). Indian cuisine like Red Fort in Soho (way beyond your typical curry house). Broiled tomatoes at breakfast. The Eye. Wedgwood Jasparware. What's left of Windsor Castle. Portobello Road. Speakers' Corner at Marble Arch.

All that comes to mind at the moment.

Newcastle Brown Ale. I'm sipping a cold one right now.
All of the great music that the British bands gave the world.

The thing I admire the most about the British was their refusal to surrender (either officially or otherwise) during World War II. A courageous lot. Yeah, I like the Brits. Don't always agree with them nor do they with the USA but that's part of the reason I like them. We can disagree and then agree to disagree and get on with it when we need to work together.

Stilton cheese.
The graffeti on the wall of the chapel in Cambridge that was put there by Cromwells men!   or in other words the sense of ancient history in all parts of the country.
London - and the museums and art and red double decker buses and Harrods and the ravens at the tower of London and the accents and the book stores and.......................... well, you get the point.
Pub lunches
The Phantom of the Opera
Cornwall
The Lock Ness Monster
Grilled breakfasts - including the grilled or fried tomatoes
Bentleys
Rolls royces
Sausage rolls
Water cress sandwiches
Stonehenge
The White Horse
The Green Man
and so on and so on

I love the fact that we share a common language yet bloody well can not understand one another,  Bass Ale,   Breakfast Bangers, and the Cheddar cheeses.

Any more I can do with out Phillips, and above all Dyson products.

Anglophilically,

Doctor Who!

DomKen -> RE: What do Americans like about Britain ? (8/28/2010 10:37:30 PM)

I love hiking in England. For such a densely populated country it is still remarkably easy to take a walk through the country and the country has laws/traditions about public access that means you can just go through any gates you come upon without any trouble, or at the very least I've never had any trouble.

Fish and Chips

BBC News, I've listened/watched it in one form or anything virtually every day of my adult life.

The Inklings

Alan Turing

Doctor Who

GreedyTop -> RE: What do Americans like about Britain ? (8/28/2010 11:00:56 PM)

Dr. Who.
Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy
Monty Python
Fortnum and MAson
Bagpipes
Kilts
bodhrain (sp?)

Krull but that is really more of a UK thing, then again I love all people.

Tantriqu -> RE: What do Americans like about Britain ? (8/29/2010 6:28:53 AM)

The English language,
English authors and poets,
anti-slavery and childhood labour, and pro-education legislation,
protestantism,
Terry Pratchett's theory that your lousy weather made you a nation of inventors, ancestors, professors and explorers, and
Submissive alpha men!

Thanks!

GreedyTop -> RE: What do Americans like about Britain ? (8/29/2010 7:20:56 AM)

ScaryJello -> RE: What do Americans like about Britain ? (8/29/2010 7:28:01 AM)

We are two countries divided by one language.

Actually i quite like The UK. Newcastle, WytchWood Brewery, Fish and Chips, English Pubs, rugby songs, drinking songs. Also the underground clubs in the UK are pretty excellent.

And a woman with a nice british accent...mmmmmm I also love irish and scottish accents. Provided they fit of course.

The UK is a great place and I can't wait to go back to visit.

Aynne88 -> RE: What do Americans like about Britain ? (8/29/2010 7:33:07 AM)

The music! How would I have been a punk rocker throughout the 80's without you guys?[;)].

Bass Ale

The BBC

Saville Row

Gordon Ramsey ....yum.....

Monty Python

Aston Martin

Cool fashion sense

That clipped accent

I have been three times and I love it there. My sister is currently in Thetford and I am going in early spring to visit, yay!

Oh and absinthe in some questionable pubs. Good times. [:)].

LadyHibiscus -> RE: What do Americans like about Britain ? (8/29/2010 8:35:03 AM)

My mom took me to the UK as a graduation gift for my second master's degree. Early 90's sometime. BEST TIME EVAR.

The people, the landscape, the food (yay cream teas), it's a Good Place.

As someone who was born just outside Newcastle, I commend you on your excellent taste in cities! [:D]

ScaryJello -> RE: What do Americans like about Britain ? (8/29/2010 8:43:22 AM)

Well with such lovely scenery, excellent ales and pretty bunnies, how could I not love Newcastle? How could anyone?

Also you should try Anything made by the WytchWood breweries. Their Hobgoblin Ale is excellent.

myotherself -> RE: What do Americans like about Britain ? (8/29/2010 8:56:02 AM)

I've tried it, but I'm not really an ale person.

Give me wine any day!
