The combat mission is over.

Iraqi forces are now in charge.

Obama's words about Bush were dead on.

Your thoughts?

What normally comes after a withdrawal, especially in this fucking disaster that became more than it was intended to be.

It is reported many want the Americans to stay as threat from others is still felt, this threat escalates and becomes more, the recriminations might infect the US, a case of yet more accusations of a unfinished job. But if it was not for the public outcry to bring the boys back home, would there be a date for withdrawal.

Im glad so many will be rejoining their families or at least be home.
And I will be happier when the rest are back amongst their loved ones

Why does such an amazing orator suck at it so badly now? I may go read a transcript later, but I damn near fell asleep at the wheel listening to the speech on the way home. Thank God I missed the first few minutes, or it could have been bad.

Fumes maybe?? smiles..It does make you wonder why, when he is so good naturally.

This.

I found the speech to be stilted and choppy with no sign of the energy and animation that I have come to associate with Pres. Obama.

Brain -> RE: Obama on the Iraqi Withdrawal (8/31/2010 6:33:51 PM)

I feel the same way listening to Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh.

I think Obama's depressed because Democrats are going to get their butts kicked in November. Chris Matthews said that Republicans have a 10 point lead to take back Congress which translates into 60 seats.

So the tingling has moved from his leg to his arm, huh?

TheHeretic -> RE: Obama on the Iraqi Withdrawal (8/31/2010 6:38:57 PM)

Ok. For those who want to know what he said, without having to sit through that ... presentation, here is the official White House transcript (I wasn't hitting a straight transcription yet)

Brain -> RE: Obama on the Iraqi Withdrawal (8/31/2010 6:40:40 PM)

It's about time the war is over. I think the Iraqis have a lot of nerve expecting America to stay in the country after all the money and lives that have been spent. Even if it means civil war the United States has to leave Iraq.

I didn't like his red tie. The fact that he's wearing a red tie means to me is not concentrating on his base. He's more interested in Wall Street and being bipartisan.

servantforuse -> RE: Obama on the Iraqi Withdrawal (8/31/2010 6:46:53 PM)

Obama seemed to forget that he was dead set against the surge in Iraq. The surge worked but he also forgot to give any credit to the president who presided him who was responsible for the surge. That speech was a joke.

H'mmm, I wonder did the Iraqi's invite the US Army to come and demolish their infrastructure. Removing a tyrant and neutralising any possibility of wmd's is one thing, but destroying anything that made them anywhere near twentieth century was not necessary, yet it was done. The money spent is only fair for more or less blasting the Iraqi people back to more or less the stone age, as to the lives spent, though they are regrettable, they are expendable by virtue of being in the armed forces in time of conflict and those that gained, do they really care, or are they just forming the words to be politically correct.

I only hope for all the money spent and blood spilled it was worth it and the rest of the world let alone the US can now be confident there is one less unknown quantity in the area that feeds the world with the oil it needs to survive and ensures it's political stability.

If a civil war is left in Iraq, it might have all been for nothing, for the sureties gained might be swept away with the turn of a new leader.

Brain -> RE: Obama on the Iraqi Withdrawal (8/31/2010 7:01:04 PM)

I'm not going to say the surge worked because I will not be surprised if a civil war breaks out tomorrow or next week or next month. I don't think it was much of the surge anyway; it was more about paying money so they would stop fighting. I think peace in that country is very fragile right now.

He forgot he didnt like the idea??

quote:

As we do, I am mindful that the Iraq War has been a contentious issue at home. Here, too, it is time to turn the page. This afternoon, I spoke to former President George W. Bush. It's well known that he and I disagreed about the war from its outset.

Hmm.. seems he did remember.

Yet, he gave Bush no credit whatsoever?

quote:

Yet no one could doubt President Bush's support for our troops, or his love of country and commitment to our security. As I have said, there were patriots who supported this war, and patriots who opposed it. And all of us are united in appreciation for our servicemen and women, and our hope for Iraq's future.

I think you lost the plot somewhere dear chap, cos that comment is newtshit crazy

servantforuse -> RE: Obama on the Iraqi Withdrawal (8/31/2010 7:07:53 PM)

That statement is just the opposite of giving Bush credit for the surge.

Brain -> RE: Obama on the Iraqi Withdrawal (8/31/2010 7:09:10 PM)

It's irrelevant whether they were invited or not. The United States is not obligated to stay in that country. The Americans have spent double or triple the money to restore anything that was destroyed by the war. And Bush declared Mission accomplished quickly so not much of Iraq was destroyed at that time. Iraqis destroyed their own country after the George Bush declared Mission accomplished.

Yeah the surge worked just beautifully, peace and prosperity has returned after his heroic liberation of the Iraqis.
