Police: Man holds hostages in Discovery building

SILVER SPRING, Md. – A man upset with the Discovery Channel's environmental programming took several people hostage at the company's headquarters Wednesday, officials said.

Police were negotiating with the gunman, who burst into the suburban Washington building about 1 p.m. wearing what seemed to be metallic canisters strapped to his front and back and waving a handgun.

The gunman had what Montgomery County Police Chief Thomas Manger described as a "small number of hostages" but he did not say how many. He also did not say what the man wants or whether anyone was hurt.

Manger said most of the 1,900 people who work in the building were able to get out safely.

A law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing said authorities have identified James J. Lee as the likely suspect. Police believe he has a handgun but have not confirmed that he has explosives, the official said.

Well, for the first time that I can remember, a left leaning radical has taken hostages. Considering that his manifesto which seems to have been removed from the web seems to promote an anti-human stand.

quote:

“I want Discovery Communications to broadcast on their channels to the world their new program lineup and I want proof they are doing so. I want the new shows started by asking the public for inventive solution ideas to save the planet and the remaining wildlife on it,” the alleged manifesto reads, adding:"Nothing is more important than saving ... the Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels. The humans? The planet does not need humans.”

Full story

I refer to this person as a left leaning radical because the environment seems to be a Liberal cause.

I certainly cant remember a recent time when a lefty taken hostages either.  You would probably have to go all the way back to some of the campus protests of the late 60's and early 70's.  I also concur with your assesment that he is a left leaning radical because of the nature of his cause.

I am for saving the 'augies'. (Thats how my youngest daughter called them, in her infancy).

jlf1961 -> RE: Hostage Situation in Maryland (9/1/2010 1:05:59 PM)

It seems that he has been arrested for misdemeanor crimes prior to this for incidents out side the discovery building.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Hostage Situation in Maryland (9/1/2010 1:12:42 PM)

Unfortunately, now all the anti gun nuts are going to get all up in arms.

SorceressJ -> RE: Hostage Situation in Maryland (9/1/2010 1:18:07 PM)

Yes, apparently one of his previous incidents involved throwing thousands of cash dollars in the air outside the building. I have just come form the Yahell homepage which is carrying the story..
It's a real pity, for more reasons than one. Firstly, that someone may be injured or killed, which is always unfortunate. Secondly, IMO the Discovery channel does do it's part to present environmental issues well, and is one of the very small handful of channels on cable television at all that I will consent to watch, because most of the rest is pure, unadulterated crap (Discovery, Nat Geo, History, Animal Planet, and maybe some Cartoon Network to lighten the load. Even Sci-Fi has de-evolved in my book; I no longer watch it). Next, that the issues of the environment will now be mocked and ignored further because they will seem to have been championed by an apparent nutjob (that is what they will say, anyhow. I am not the desperate devil's advocate here, not this time..).
Le sigh..

Yup, HW, they will get up in arms about the fact he is using a gun... they will ignore the fact that he also seems to have explosives.

I may be a liberal, but I do own a number of firearms, and do not support the outright ban of firearms in America...

I do support sensible gun laws.

I do not support the idea that the world does not need humans, HOWEVER that said, I do that there are a lot of humans on the planet that some how survived to adulthood by sheer dumb luck. The "Terminally Stupid" (i.e an individual that will stand within striking distance of a rattlesnake and poke it with a stick and people who exhibit similar stupid behavior) are destroying human civilization.

According to a spokesman on CNN the suspect was taken out by a police sniper.

The spokesman was the chief of police, who said the suspect was "in custody" but did not know the condition of the suspect.

Something evidently went off, and they are now searching the building to make sure there are no explosives in the building. Evidently, Mr. Lee took a number of backpacks into the building.

The reason the suspect was shot seems to be that the negotiator felt the hostages were in danger.

According to the briefing, the suspect was going through a wide range of emotions.

Ahem...as a formal rural American and current citizen who lives about a mile from this situation...

First, I have no problem with people in rural areas owning shotguns and rifles for protection from "varmits." I have a huge problem with people who own firearms that were clearly made for the express purpose of killing another human being. But firearms aren't really the issue here, are they?

The issue is that someone feels strongly enough about the problem of overpopulation to take over the Discovery building to discuss it. I believe that overpopulation is the source of the world's problems. Am I happy this guy decided to be a terrorist about it? Hell, no!! Now it makes it more difficult for people to sanely discuss the issue.

Sigh...

Another lunatic with bombs and firearms and hostages. [>:] Thankfully no one else was injured. I cannot tell from the initial reports how many bombs there were total and if all have been disarmed.

The snipers did a great job.

Sanity -> RE: Hostage Situation in Maryland (9/1/2010 5:58:45 PM)

So do we blame this on the far left blogs and talkers, big Mike Moore and thinkprogress and Huffpo, Greenpeace and Mathews and Maddow and Olbermann?

Lucylastic -> RE: Hostage Situation in Maryland (9/1/2010 6:23:35 PM)

blame whoever you want, your opinion is always welcomed supported and admired

TheHeretic -> RE: Hostage Situation in Maryland (9/1/2010 6:27:02 PM)

It's such a sad thing that this poor victim couldn't get the mental health help he needed because the Republican stopped national health care*

*since everybody is having so much fun assigning positions to the other side.

Daddysredhead -> RE: Hostage Situation in Maryland (9/1/2010 6:29:06 PM)

I live in NoVA and this was all over the local news, and I saw that it made MSN, etc. online.  I'm glad that the kids in the day care center in the building got out ok and that there were no more injuries than what we've heard reported.  It's all just a shame really.  People will be impacted for a long time, especially the little ones.

Daddysredhead -> RE: Hostage Situation in Maryland (9/1/2010 6:30:09 PM)

Rich, who is assigning positions to the other side??
Only you it seems
unless my comprehension is really fucked up.Sanity is wanting to blame whoever and he is completely within his right to do so...but no one who has posted apart from that has even mentioned blaming any "other side"
