Yes, BBC was biased: Director General Mark Thompson admits a 'massive' lean to Left

BBC director general Mark Thompson said there was 'much less overt tribalism' within the corporation

BBC Director General Mark Thompson has admitted the corporation was guilty of a 'massive' Left-wing bias in the past.

The TV chief also admitted there had been a 'struggle' to achieve impartiality and that staff were ' mystified' by the early years of Margaret Thatcher's government. But he claimed there was now 'much less overt tribalism' among the current crop of young journalists, and said in recent times the corporation was a 'broader church'. He claimed there was now an 'honourable tradition of journalists from the right' working for the corporation.

His comments, made in the New Statesman magazine, are one of the clearest admissions of political bias from such a senior member of its staff.

The BBC has long been accused of being institutionally biased towards the Left, and an internal report from 2007 said it had to make greater efforts to avoid liberal bias. That report criticised the BBC for coming late to several important stories including euroscepticism and immigration, which it described as 'off limits in terms of a liberal-minded comfort zone'.

It seems it would be hard for the far left to continue to try to deny it, but I am sure they will try.

Well, DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. That is about as newsorthy as Fox admitting a massive lean to the right.

Say it ain't so...How many times were we told that we needed to look beyond our national news sources, for "unbiased" news?

Sanity, dont you even read the crap you post. Thompson was clearly talking about a time 30 years ago, when he joined the BBC. the words below are from YOUR link.

Speaking of the time when he joined the BBC, Mr Thompson told the magazine: 'In the BBC I joined 30 years ago [as a production trainee, in 1979] there was, in much of current affairs, in terms of people's personal politics, which were quite vocal, a massive bias to the Left.
'The organisation did struggle then with impartiality. And journalistically, staff were quite mystified by the early years of Thatcher.
'Now it is a completely different generation.
'There is much less overt tribalism among the young journalists who work for the BBC.'

"the original source is BBC Director General Mark Thompson."

Yeah, whose statements have been misrepresented by the dailymail, and their story twisted further by you. This story boils down to people at the BBC being much further left than the govt in the late 70s/early 80s. This is hardly surprising. Try googling the post war consensus (you'll love reading about how it 'failed', and it'll give ya context).

And seriously dude, you don't want to read the dailymail.....this is not a left/right thing, this is a sane/insane thing. The dailymail is not considered to be useless even as toiletpaper because it's 'right wing', it just plain makes shit up. INSANE shit. If ya want a right wing british source try the Telegraph or the Times. Dailymail'll rot your brain.

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eBT6OSr1TI

Those headlines aren't faked....those are actual things published by the dailymail...like I said, they're mad.

servantforuse -> RE: BBC Chief Admits A 'Massive' Lean To Left (9/2/2010 7:21:01 PM)

How long before MSNBC admits that they are biased ? I won't even mebtion NBC, CBS, CNN, ABC etc. adnausium..

Lucylastic -> RE: BBC Chief Admits A 'Massive' Lean To Left (9/2/2010 7:22:53 PM)

As the only one who isnt biased is fox...it stands that all the rest are
if you have fucked up logic

servantforuse -> RE: BBC Chief Admits A 'Massive' Lean To Left (9/2/2010 7:27:34 PM)

I see FOX as biased. I do see an opposing view on FOX that I never see on the other channels though. Has there ever been a view point from the right on Kieth Olbermanns show ? If there was, I missed it.

DomKen -> RE: BBC Chief Admits A 'Massive' Lean To Left (9/2/2010 7:28:58 PM)

Notice "early days" and "Thatcher"? Seems unlikely he was talking about any time since 1980.

As to the report from 2007? It says they have to work harder to be neutral. Not that there was some terrible bias present.

Has the Mail added a page 3 girl? I'd still prefer the Sun for my dose of British tabloid scandal and topless girls but...

The story about the internal report from 2007 has been around since ...........well, 2007.

They are recognizing their own deficiencies and trying to correct them in the spirit of objective journalism.

Contrast that with Fox which claims to be fair and balanced.

servantforuse -> RE: BBC Chief Admits A 'Massive' Lean To Left (9/2/2010 7:38:19 PM)

When will CNN, CBS,ABC,MSNBC,CNN and PBS start to be objective in their journalism ?

Sanity -> RE: BBC Chief Admits A 'Massive' Lean To Left (9/2/2010 7:43:39 PM)

Again, the BBC was forced to admit its leftist bias as recently as a 2007 report. Tht doesnt mean that was the end of it, that just means thats the last time it was admitted to.

They are, with the exception of MSNBC.

It's just that you like to listen to what massages your beliefs, so you spend your time listening to Limbaugh and Fox because they agree with your viewpoints.

Then you can turn around and say "now they really tell the truth".

Not to mention that this whole idea of liberal media bias was started by those who stood to benefit from it, Fox, Limbaugh, etc..

DCWoody -> RE: BBC Chief Admits A 'Massive' Lean To Left (9/2/2010 7:56:49 PM)

No it was not, someone linked the report earlier in the thread. Try reading it if ya like. That the BBC works to reduce its bias is not a good argument that it's biased, and the most controversial aspect of the report was on the Palestine/Israel thing, not a 'leftist' thing.

The BBC is the least biased broadcaster in the world, by a long way. Expecting perfection is too much, but it's damn good, and your story is twisted bullshit.
