Owner59 -> U.S. Marine commandos take pirate-held cargo ship (9/10/2010 10:20:20 PM)

I love a commander in chief with back-bone.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/10/us-marines-take-ship-from_n_711813.html

The mission - using small craft to reach the deck of German-owned vessel as the crew huddled in a safe room below - ranks among the most dramatic high seas confrontations with pirates by the task force created to protect shipping lanes off lawless Somalia.

The crew managed to kill the engines before taking refuge in an panic room-style chamber, leaving the ship adrift and the pirates so frustrated they started damaging equipment after hijacking the vessel Wednesday, Navy officials and the ship's operator say.

That fails to meet even your customarily low bar, mn, but what has me concerned is the lack of sociopathic cursing. Too early, sick, or new meds?[:D]

I don`t think conservatives know what backbone is.They don`t have any examples to draw from.That`s why they don`t recognize it.They don`t know what it is.

This definitely signals a change in policy.

What was bush policy on pirates?.........[sm=dunno.gif]

Oh right.....pay them off and hope for the best.

President Obama proved his salt when he ordered the SEALs to take the thugs out when he 1st took office.

It`s about time we shot back.

I agree shooting those children Pirates with no trials was the right thing to do.

I have to agree, I like Obamas policy of Killing Suspects along with thier families also.

Why these Pirates are getting mercy I don't know. Pirates should be shot. Not taken to trial.

Owner59 -> RE: U.S. Marine commandos take pirate-held cargo ship (9/11/2010 4:34:17 PM)

And as to the silly slam at Bush Policy. There were
absolutly ZERO attacks by African Pirates, under Bush. Zero under Clinton, Bush 41, Reagan, Carter, all the way back to 1804.

Untill Obama, they didn't dare.

as happens so often, o59 is simply making shit up.

“Every indication is that this is the first time a U.S.-flagged ship has been successfully seized by pirates,” said Lt. Nathan Christensen, a spokesperson for for the U.S. Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet. The last documented pirate attack of a US vessel by African pirates was reported in 1804, off Libya, according to The Los Angeles Times.

About 30 Chinese rescued from pirate attack - CNN.com

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was at the United Nations on Tuesday for a discussion of the piracy problem and for the Security Council vote. [image]http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/.element/img/2.0/mosaic/tabs/video.gif[/image] Watch how the United States hopes to fight piracy »

"I wouldn't be here seeking authorization to go ashore if the U.S. government -- perhaps most importantly the president of the United States -- were not behind this resolution," Rice said after the council vote.

Asked if she thought U.S. troops soon would be on land chasing pirates, Rice would not speculate.

"The United States is part of an international effort," she said. "We do have naval forces that have been involved in this effort. What this [resolution] does is to authorize that the boundary of the maritime cannot become a safe-haven boundary for pirates. What we do -- or do not do -- in issues like hot pursuit, we'll have to see ... case by case.

Earlier, in remarks to the Security Council, Rice described the growing problem of piracy as "a symptom of the instability, the poverty, the lawlessness that have plagued Somalia for the past two decades," adding that the Bush administration "does believe that the time has come for the United Nations to consider and authorize a peacekeeping operation."

Off Africa's coast, pirates 'out of control' - USATODAY.com
Nov 19, 2008

The Bush administration is trying to coordinate efforts to stop the pirates, although military officials say they can't stop all pirates because there are too many ships in a huge area to protect.

"We're working with other members of the Security Council right now to see if there are actions that we can do to more effectively fight against piracy and prevent it," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Wednesday.

Meantime, the pirates continue to operate with near impunity across broad swaths of the Indian Ocean. They often anchor their seized boats near the ungoverned Somali coast and wait for the ships' owners to pay increasingly lucrative ransoms.

This year, pirates have attacked at least 95 ships near Somalia, including 38 hijackings, Mukundan says. More than 740 crewmembers have been taken hostage. There has been one fatality, Middleton says, adding that he fears hijackings could become increasingly violent.

The USS Cape St. George and the USS Gonzalez

I think there was a communication breakdown, Tazzy. I was referring to US merchant vessels actually being attacked by pirates, rather than pirates who started shooting when they saw they were about to be boarded the Navy. Or were you just going for an obscure snark in the dark?

And we repatriated those pirates, during 2006.
