I did not want to reveal it and spoil it for those who may want to read it, but I will tell you privately. :)

Elisabella -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 4:07:52 PM)

awesome ty :)

SpiritedRadiance -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 4:36:56 PM)

I didnt view it as a love story... I saw it  more of a girl who found a more "safe" way to express her urges in self mutilation. Instead of cutting or harming herself she was allowing another to do it for her. I didnt see it as the other girls not being worthy more of a man who just tossed out girls when they didnt amuse him anymore or didnt fight against it anymore, hence the need for the sign to be attached to always show him searching for a secretary (pet), People take differences on it, I dont find a man who takes a cutter who just got out of a mental institution, and then preforms sadistic acts on her as something hot or erotic.

If the story line was based on a character who didnt have self harm tendencies I might have seen the entire movie in a different light.

***Spoiler Alert***

Elisabella, just a little correction, she didn't sit outside of his house for days, she sat in the office in a wedding gown, palms down on the desk, because he told her not to move. She sad there, hungry, exhausted, ignoring pleas from friends and family, to the point of urinating at the desk, until he came for her.

SpiritedRadiance, did you not see the ending? He came for her after that, bringing her food, carried her home, lovingly bathed her, washing her hair, treating her so very intimately, then made love  to her.  I thought it was beautiful.

Just recently watched it, and would like to hear others' reactions.
It's the only movie I've ever seen that contained BDSM themes in a realistic manner (as opposed to porn). I loved it.

littlewonder -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 5:05:03 PM)

it sucked. one of the worst movies i've ever seen. it wasnt a movie about bdsm but about two people who had mental issues. i cringed watching that movie.

DomImus -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 5:06:20 PM)

I've never really understood why people criticize films like this because they don't portray this or that in an accurate light. If we forumites all got together and produced a bdsm oriented film we'd critique it amongst ourselves because it was too much of this or not enough of that. The truth is we could probably never reach enough of a consensus to get past the pre-production stage.

It doesnt change the fact he went through women quicker then most change their underwear, Or that he preformed s&m on a girl who had a history of self harm behaviors. I get the OH you didnt move and I just love you for ever and ever because you did this AWESOME proof of your submission to me.

All I saw it as if you were really a sub youd stay here for days until i decide to come back for you because I have nothing better to do. I believe many get the ultimate act of submission idea from the movie.

Sure was it sweet he bathed her and got her some food sure it was. But I dont see doing a few acts of kindness of something hot. I dont see someone just give off acts of kindness to substitute for the last x amount of days ive been a complete dick to you.

Firebirdseeking -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 6:01:44 PM)

Did I like it.  Hmmm.  yes and no.  I agreed with others who were bothered by the cutting, and the fact that she had spent time in a mental institution.  However, I saw that as less about the cutting itself, and more about her inability to cope with her feelings, which is a classic response of children who grow up with alcoholism (alcoholics anasthetize their feelings with booze, and their kids learn how not to cope, as well).  I also didnt like the fact that so little is revealed about his history and background, other than a very angry wife,  a string of former secretaries, and that he grew up in Des Moines.  I didnt really see him as dominant in the sense that dominance is important to me, he was more of a control freak and perhaps a sexual dominant.  But I did like seeing how she opened up to understanding that she liked and needed control, and that helped her accept who she is.

I'd like to know the ending in the book, too!

Ah yeah my mistake. I also totally forgot that she had another bf in the movie until my husband reminded me.

It's been awhile :P

~FR~The spanking was okay.

peppermint -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 7:54:15 PM)

The two main characters in Secretary were psychologically not normal.  The movie seemed to say that people who do things like those two did are unbalanced, and quite frankly, they looked awfully unbalanced in the movie.  The only part of the movie I liked was the very end.  It showed him off to work, living in a normal neighborhood, their neighbors unaware of what went on next door.  That was the only part of the movie that was true, in my opinion.

MistressTonya2u -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 7:57:31 PM)

I would like to know the ending too.

I rather liked the movie.

junecleaver -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 8:37:48 PM)

My opinion:  Mr. Gray (Grey?) can do whatever he wants to me.   I love that kind of creepy in a man.  <3

This. I absolutely loved Secretary. Secretary is the reason I finally accepted my kink, and I firmly disagree that the mental institution/cutting issues derail from the general awesomeness of a BDSM love story. The movie isn't saying you have to have a mental disorder to be into BDSM, it's saying - very honestly - that these particular people are very lost and lonely because they won't accept/don't know what they need. If you pay close attention to the scenes where they're playing (the spanking scene, yes, but also the "I'm Your Man" montage and the little clips where he's dominating her in the office), they're both calm, vibrant, happy people. It's only when Mr. Grey is wracked with guilt trying to avoid what he needs and Lee is young and has no idea what she needs that they're both miserable and imbalanced. I think the message of the movie is actually "be who you are and you'll be happy, healthy and balanced." You wouldn't get that message from a movie where the people started out healthy and balanced and then went into BDSM.

Also, Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader are smoking hot [;)]

leadership527 -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 11:22:07 PM)

See, that's how I read it also Jujubee. Heck, I've seen lots and lots of vanilla love stories where the two people were wrecks who saved each other. Redemption through love is a pretty common theme, not one leveled at sicko BDSM folks. So I saw the film as a sweet love story with a D/s theme that actually made some sense.

Twoshoes -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 11:36:57 PM)

I'd describe it as "cutsey".

The acting & directing, camera work made it fun to watch.

His subtle aggression - good.
Her vulnerability was delicious.

However, bit too... pleasant.

The characters are boring by themselves.

Edit: I need to go watch it now.

bloomswell -> RE: "Secretary" (9/13/2010 12:01:54 AM)

I also loved it. The main leads are both so delicious and unforgettable. Mmmmm.
I think I'd file it next to The Killing of Sister George, which is also based on power exchange.

ranja -> RE: "Secretary" (9/13/2010 1:17:43 AM)
