Edited to add:  Per LadyHibiscus, my experience is the same.  Some women find orgasms help reduce cramps, but others find orgasms (during this time) intensify existing cramps or create new ones.

Edited to correct my evil typing:  It's very much up to how a specific woman feels and what she wants during this time... at least this has been my experience thus far.

. . . And, let's face it, while a lot of women have got past their dislike of menstruation and no longer see it as a nasty, messy, miserable experience, many haven't.  Vaginas may one day rule the Earth (indeed, already do, according to some) - but not for those few days every month.

~~TMI WARNING~~

Having a period is not "dirty" in the shameful sense, it's just a natural function, but strewth! There is ZERO erotic component to it for most women, and I am confident in that generalization. First, the blood and tissue just COMES OUT, there is no kegel on earth that will allow you to control it. If you have endometriosis, the clots are well... CLOTS. Giant rushes of fluid that can challenge the toughest tampon. Couple that with crushing internal pain, nausea, headaches, and lower back pain, and it's just not Happy Time. At this point, I say HUZZAH FOR MEDICATION!!!

Even WITH the right symptom controllers, menstrual blood is not BLOOD as such, it's not the lovely metallic stuff that you get when you hit someone just so with your singletail. It's gucky, or slimy, or dark, or just NOT. It often smells bad, like the dead and dying stuff that it is. The desire to wash it off and flush it away is pretty strong, for me anyway.

And yeah, I will have sex during my period! But you better believe there is hosing off before and after!

Really?  I've never thought it was that bad, myself.  Certainly no worse than pee.

Blech. From waking up in a LAKE at age 13, to the hardly-at-all that I have now, it's a matter of mess control.

Going back to an earlier point:  it's ironic that you should maintain that 'it's not blood'.   I have this little theory that one of the reasons men often object to it is precisely because it is, to them, 'blood'.  Most men don't see anything that at least looks like blood on a regular basis - not the way women do.  It's more alarming, perhaps, because we only associate that colour of fluid with injuries and things that are 'wrong' with the body.

Another one of my little hypotheses - take it or leave it, I don't mind . . . .

I get so god damned horny during my period that not even the crack of dawn is safe, but a guy diving at my crotch with his tongue out during that time of the month will, more than likely get a kick in the teeth for his troubles.

That IS ever so true, Bent, my libido skyrockets at that time! Which seems so odd, shouldn't libido be tied in to ovulation?

I thought there was a simple explanation for that: increased friction in a woman's growler when she's got the painters in.  No?

Hmmm.... I shall Ponder that.

Really, though, since we seem to be sharing all the seeekrits, shouldn't you just be taking advantage? ;)

Of what?  You seriously think I want to go out looking for a really, really bad-tempered woman who wants to knee me in the face?

I like oral sex as much as the next girl and I'm not disgusted or horrified by a little blood but damned if I want to see it smeared all over the face of my beloved. He's man enough for me without all that mess, thanks.

People, seriously...why the fuss? There is a very simple solution to having sex on your period.

Perhaps I am aging myself, but there is a device called a diaphragm? Hello?

Nothing gets out of that baby either during oral sex or fucking. I have had sex on my period since age 16 and the guy never once knew about it; other than me being a bitch from cramps.

As far as I know, most guys don't give a damn unless a woman is bleeding to death, but from my point of view, why spoil such a lovely act with blood?

Throw the diaphragm in have fun, take it out later, wash it off and voila! Problem solved.

Sexy Red, that's a great idea, except that there are always exceptions to everything, and I imagine that Hibbie would agree that for some of us, a diaphragm just isn't enough. I know, I've tried to use one in the way you've mentioned, and sometimes it does help...on light days. But some of us lose up to a pint a day, with gushers of a half cup to a cup...not to mention the clots, which can be placenta sized. Welcome to my reality.

I apologize to all of you who just lost your appetite.

Yikes, I hear you MistressRosalyn, I guess since mine was always normal, I would not know. My sister in law had endometriosis her entire life and she could not use it either.

Oh jeez LadyH....I hate to say it, but everything you said is so true. I have penetrative sex during my period but all of the above is right on. Oral? No thanks. Shower right after, thanks.

I also don't know lots of men in line to get their redwings, and I am okay with that. Really. .

I see no problem whatsoever.  So long as I've given the Domme a good hosing down, with maybe a vigorous brush with a sturdy yard broom dipped in bleach . . . where's the problem?  Standard procedure for safe sex these days, anyway.

We call it chunkin chicken livers in my sick family.

Sorry to have shared that, but I mean really, how many times in my life is that likely to be something I can say and not seem totally wacked out.

I am thinking this will be my one and only opportunity.
