Hippiekinkster -> "Proofiness", or numbers one wishes to be true (9/19/2010 5:44:49 PM)

NY Times book review

How bullshit numbers are used to sell, for instance, the Bush tax cuts, and other dishonest uses. There's an excellent example of McCarthy and his completely made up list of 205 communists in the government.

I have GOT to read this book.

Another good book

Apperantly he asserts Al Franken didn't win his election, and Al gore lies about Global Warming.

It does look like an interesting read.

Liars figure and figures lie..

Oh, Al Gore doesn't lie about, (snicker) "Global warming" anymore. He's got a few new hobbies.

I havn't seen that photo of a polar bear on a little piece of ice in a while. Did the North pole freeze over again, or is Al in court ?

This is something I have been saying for years, how's come nobody believed me but now they believe that guy ?

Percentage, percentile, average, mean, root mean square. These are not "fudges" of statistics, but few understand the differences. When you add up the numbers a certain way, you get one result, another way and you get a different result. Of course I am not referring to simple addition.

And Bush was not actually lying when he said the average American family, he just meant average to him. The only people he ever has any contact with who aren't multimillionaires is the valet at a restaurant, and I mean probably not even the chefs and the waiters. ( well perhaps some of his ESSENTIAL bodyguards )

Take drug companies for example. One drug under test results in 35% getting cramps, diarhea(sp), nosebleeds and hearing loss. Another drug results in immediate death, but only for 5%. Which one goes to market first ? And this is not even the crux of the bullshit. It goes alot farther than that.

Any and all are welcome to ignore the words of a dropout while embracing the "facts" as given by people who went to toga parties and bought some letters after their name. Go right ahead.

Since the bulk of McCarthy's "completely made up list" has since been verified by other sources, you might want to rethink whether the book is worth the trees it killed.

You're forgetting the people he was buying drugs from in college (and for his twenties and early thirties, come to that): they probably weren't members of the elite either...

Actually....you really should read a bit more. The so called list did not exist. That there were Communist and specifically Russian agents working for the US Government that the list supposedly contained, is true. Yes, that part HAS been verified. Now, whether or not the number of people on that list were the number of agents, I don't know. I only read up on that area as a tangent to other reading, I have not specifically studied it. You have read Mitrokhin's books, haven't you? (Note...I have only read the first one, not all five of them.)

Be well....

Truly amazing that 60 years later we still have those defending the man whose name has become synonymous with sleazy politics.

You might read about the Venona decrypts and the subsequent confessions of several spys that implicated the most important of those McCarthy accused. Amazing that a REAL government conspiracy to coverup communist infiltration starting in the 30s and that has been proven to exist gets no play from the truther types on this board.

Malkinius -> RE: "Proofiness", or numbers one wishes to be true (9/21/2010 1:08:21 AM)

Greetings....

I wonder how many people know which two future presidents of the US worked for and with McCarthy? <grins> There were a number of people on the lists which actually named names who swore they were not Communists or Communist sympathizers who thirty years later came out and said that of course they were. Zero Mostel come to mind as one of those who did that.

Regretfully, both sides on issues like this have too many people who follow the party lie without doing any checking for themselves. The truth is much more interesting in most cases.

Be well....

Malkinius
