Republicans block bill to lift military gay ban

WASHINGTON – Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked legislation that would have repealed the law banning gays from serving openly in the military.

The partisan vote was a defeat for Senate Democrats and gay rights advocates, who saw the bill as their last chance before November's elections to overturn the law known as "don't ask, don't tell."

With the 56-43 vote, Democrats fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance the legislation. It also would have authorized $726 billion in defense spending including a pay raise for troops.

Now wasn't there someone in another thread that said that Republicans are FOR gay rights? Considering they blocked even debate on the issue, sounds to me that someone was either ignorant of the facts or the lied plain and simple.

mnottertail -> RE: Republicans block bill to lift military gay ban (9/21/2010 2:32:40 PM)

I suppose they were afraid that the gays would go stampeding to the military, and there would be nobody left in airport bathrooms to play with them.

Just good business, is all.

I have to wonder why any gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered person in this country would vote for the Republicans.

mnottertail -> RE: Republicans block bill to lift military gay ban (9/21/2010 2:47:30 PM)

Republican opponents included some GOP senators who favor lifting the Pentagon's requirement that gays and lesbians keep their sexuality a secret.
However, they expressed concern that Democratic leaders could limit GOP amendments to the broader National Defense Authorization Act that includes the "don't ask, don't tell" provision.
Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the chamber's top Republican, proposed an agreement for the chamber to consider 20 amendments on a rotating basis, but none could include adding the DREAM Act to the bill.

From the same article, so it appears that we needed one vote to pass it, but no republican would cross the aisle based on the fact that  the 20 fuckead rotating amendments (having nothing to do with the bill) couldnt be pork packed (or ideolocially packed) into the bill, and so rather than do a  *THINK ABOUT THIS* wall street bailout sized load up (for how long?) of money into the wars.............

Yeah, it is the goddamn illegal cabbage choppers that are bankrupting us, this imperialistic incursion into the middle east is not what is doing us in.

Obstructionism at its finest.

The GOP views anything the Democrats cannot pass as a victory, no matter the merits of the legislation.

jlf1961 -> RE: Republicans block bill to lift military gay ban (9/21/2010 3:18:44 PM)

So they vote against the fucking Dream act, that is part of the parliamentary process. However, before Reid mentioned the DREAM act, Republicans were against the repeal of DADT. McCain as well as others are on record being against it.

PeonForHer -> RE: Republicans block bill to lift military gay ban (9/21/2010 3:20:12 PM)

I think this goes to a more fundamental question re Republicanism.  That is: why are they such twats?

Aneirin -> RE: Republicans block bill to lift military gay ban (9/21/2010 3:26:27 PM)

Please forgive my intrusion into American politics, but if a bill is passed to deplete yet more eligible people from having a career in the armed services, when a shortfall comes those that voted for the bill should make up the numbers, them and/or their families if the voter is past it in terms of everything including fitness to serve.

Ron, both of them are.
Don't worry, this is just another step closer to having gays serve in the military. I really don't think most of the American People really care if someone is gay if they want to serve our country.
That "dream act" crap is just the opposite. Noone wants that. I tried to call Sen. DeMint's office then Lindsey Graham's office to register my "NO" vote on it and I couldn't get through all afternoon!
When NumbersUSA tells people to call there's literally millions of calls.

But McCain was for the repeal before he was against it.

And people wonder why this guy lost credibility?

McCain appears to shift on 'don't ask, don't tell

A former war hero, McCain said he would support ending the ban once the military's top brass told him that they agreed with the change.

"The day that the leadership of the military comes to me and says, 'Senator, we ought to change the policy,' then I think we ought to consider seriously changing it," McCain said in October 2006 to an audience of Iowa State University students.

That day arrived Tuesday, with Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and Joint Chiefs Chairman Mike Mullen testifying to senators after President Obama's announcement that he would seek a congressional repeal of the 15-year-old policy.

Mullen called repealing the policy, which bans openly gay men and lesbians from serving, "the right thing to do" and said he was personally troubled by effectively forcing service members to "lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens."

Gates told the Armed Services Committee, "I fully support the president's decision."

In response, McCain declared himself "disappointed" in the testimony. "At this moment of immense hardship for our armed services, we should not be seeking to overturn the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy," he said bluntly, before describing it as "imperfect but effective."

Popeye, I guess you don't understand a small part of parliamentary procedure, YOU CAN VOTE ON EACH AMENDMENT TO BE INCLUDED OR EXCLUDED.

All you need is someone to make a motion to do just that.

No, the Republicans are using any excuse they can come up with to vote against the policy. Republicans have been on record in support of the policy for years. As has been pointed out, Republican leaders have gone on record in recent months against repealing the policy.

Perhaps if you would actually read or watch something besides FOX News you might actually learn something.

KenDckey -> RE: Republicans block bill to lift military gay ban (9/21/2010 4:46:34 PM)

Wasn't it the Democrats desire to limit the voices of the Republicans the reason that Sen Susan Collins R-Maine who supports the repeal of current law changed her vote?   I guess the Dems want to stiffle free speech.   I don't know.   Just looks like it to me.

kdsub -> RE: Republicans block bill to lift military gay ban (9/21/2010 4:59:50 PM)

You and I...like it or not...must understand they, the Republicans, are representing the wishes of their supporters. So putting the blame on their shoulders is wrong. The blame lies with the American people as a whole who are still prejudice towards homosexuals...and this includes all political parties.

maybemaybenot -> RE: Republicans block bill to lift military gay ban (9/21/2010 5:02:05 PM)

Who were the two Dems that voted with the Reps ?

popeye1250 -> RE: Republicans block bill to lift military gay ban (9/21/2010 5:05:50 PM)

I don't understand why we need a "law" for this just do it. It's getting so that some people won't pick their nose unless there's some "law" that says they can do it.
We can't enforce the laws that we have now.

Yeah....fuck all of this "law" shit....lets just make it up as we go along [8|].

At least I think that is a link to the correct vote.  They bury shit so deep, I wouldnt bet the farm on it for sure.

This would be the repeal of an existing law not the passing of a new law. It should be right up your alley.
