For those of you who think adultery is a lesser crime than murder... well, yeah, I would definitely agree that it is a lesser crime, but the fact of the matter is that a society determines which laws are the most important and what the penalty for disobeying those laws should be. We reject the rest of the civilized world's stance that the death penalty is barbarous, and yet we want to tell other people they are barbarous because we do not like how they implement their laws. We have the least moral high ground to assert that another country should listen to "civilized" countries when we aren't one

To have the position that nations should have their own sovereignty, reject a body of international laws (such as a world court) and yet denounce other people for having their own laws is what I call hypocritical

True, we have no right telling another nation how to implement their laws.

But as a nation we have always been pretty big on the old do as we say not as we do.

We can tell them how "Following these old laws just because they're 'tradition', and 'in your holy book' is silly and stupid.", the second we quit trying to ban gay marriage because "Our holy book says that's how it should be, and it's traditional!".

I'm for the death penalty in the U.S. and I don't care what they do in foreign countries.

Master adores the old episodes of West Wing. Ive gotten into them as well, some are very well written. This morning i watched one on capital punishment. The President was weighing his religious beliefs against the good of the country. Seems everyone had an opinion. The one that struck me deepest was Tobby's Rabbi (for those who know the show).

Toby :The Torah doesn't prohibit capital punishment.

RABBI GLASSMAN No.

TOBY It says, 'An eye for an eye.'

RABBI GLASSMAN:You know what it also says? It says a rebellious child can be brought to the city gates and stoned to death. It says homosexuality is an abomination and punishable by death. It says men can be polygamous and slavery is acceptable. For all I know, that thinking reflected the best wisdom of its time, but it's just plain wrong by any modern standard. Society has a right to protect itself, but it doesn't have a right to be vengeful. It has a right to punish, but it doesn't have to kill.

That struck me hard and made me think. We have a legal system in place, far more advanced than they had in bliblical days and before. Did they even have jails then? Rehab? Surely if we want to be viewed as a country who can stand up and say what is wrong in another country, we best make sure we have our own back door all nice and tidy.

True, but I bet that with the right 'enhanced interrogation techniques'
the US could get those other countries to agree to how civilised it is.

Taz,one can not go too far afield quoting that show.....some of the finest writing to have ever made it onto American TV.That particular episode was pure genius...although if I recall right the fictional President Bartlett allowed the execution to go forward.....due to political considerations?

Mike, it's called minding one's own business. Haven't you heard that the world hates the U.S. for interfering in the affairs of foreign countries? There's a good bit of truth to that.
Sovereign countries have the right to expect other countries not to interfere with them. Look at Iraq and Afganistan. Surely you don't agree with invading them like we did.
We may not agree with how they conduct business in their own countries but it is their right to do so just as it is our right to run our own country as we see fit.

Exactly. The conversation between his parson and himself was telling. They had a talk about a man in a flood. A news broadcast stated the flood was coming, but the man decided that god loved him, he would wait for god to deliver him. A boat floated by, again, the man stated that god loved him and god would deliver him. A helicopter flew overhead and he was told to grab the ladder. Again, the man stated that god loved him and would deliver him.

Well, the man died.

At the pearly gates, the man demanded to talk to god. His demand was granted and he asked god.. why did you let me die? God replied... i sent a news cast, a boat, and a helicopter... why ARE you here?

During the show, Barlett was given a few outs. One by Leo who said... let the next president worry about it. And one by the parson who said... The bible says.. vengenance is mine, sayeth the lord... At that point, if you recall, CJ walked in with the note about the sentence being carried through. It was then that Barlett made his confession. But, also recall, that Barlett also said he had to keep the office seperate from the man.

I imagine his job would not be easy for any of us. Its easy to sit back as armchair judges and rule what we would have done and wouldnt have. But we are not faced with the moral and political dilemnas,

Too true Taz.....for me it is easy...Capitol punishment is state sponsored vengeance....and I do not want my state in the vengeance business.
Justice can and is satisfied by denying a man/woman his liberty.Society is protected in the same manner, and though the state might still make egregious errors...in locking an innocent man away....they will not have executed an innocent man.As we have seen all too often recently that can not be asserted under the present system,

Mike, what i meant is that the current cases typically already include dna evidence.

Up until the moment they started invading other nations?  sure

And before you head the directions your going, there have been many governments who have pursued wiping out a part of their population and we as a nation never batted an eye.
