You got it the right way round-'it's volts that jolt and current that kills' is what I was taught. I'm not sure you can take 'any number' of volts, though, but I don't remember where the danger zone starts.

I agree. Little shocks from "static electricity" can be around 3 kV. With that much energy, however, anything above a couple of hundred μA in current can kill you.

I had a subby request I use one on him. Being an anal-retentive sort of dom, I refused to do so unless I knew exactly what I was doing to him. Also being ridiculously fearless, I did myself on the thigh with the one he handed me so that I could properly gauge the sensation. It was a lot like being kicked by a cow. I do see why they are used as cattle prods; the effect pretty much simulates what one cow would to do another. It didn't ruin my day, but it wasn't a huge amount of fun either.

If you have any kind of medical condition that would preclude such play, be safe and discuss it with a doctor, or don't go there at all. There are milder forms of electrical play that are probably a lot safer.

I won't comment on the how right or wrong the thinking is, only you can decide whats right for you. I can comment on what cattle prods can do as I've been on the receiving end more times than I care to rememeber. They hurt and for me its like what I'd imagine a buzz saw would feel like tearing across the skin. The electricity penetrates deeply and muscles contract involuntarily. The pain doesn't end immediately afterwards like a violet wand or TENS. It lingers. The few times I wasn't securely fastened to an immoveable object, everything moved...alot. I use all my breathing skills and processing tools to the max, but I quickly cave and will plead for mercy. Thankfully cp's are generally reserved for punishment and I seldom seem to require them, but there are those who do with more fortitude than I. Check out Men in Pain Claire Adams if you want to get up close and personal with two Hot Shot prods.

All the responses about "breaking a hard limit"? I read the OP over 3 times. Where exactly did the OP say that the use of a cattle prod was breaking any limit at all???? Come on folks, there is a big difference between being afraid of something and having it be a hard limit. There's lots of stuff that Master does that scare me....actually, for us that's really a part of what makes it so fucking cool!

Someone said something like you should let him try it on you and if you don't like it, if he's a "good" Master he won't use it on you again. Seriously? "Good" Master's only use things on their slaves that the slaves like? Please tell me where the submission comes in if you only have to submit to that which you like and/or want? So does that mean that if a slave doesn't like something and the Master does it...is he then a "bad" Master?

Seems to me the confusion comes into play when a person has a fear of an activity and it is immediately deemed a hard limit though the person has never experienced said activity. Usually this fear is based upon having a lack of working knowledge and a fear of not knowing what to expect when something new may be tried on a person. many of us do have a fear of electricity which is often based on being shocked from an exposed wall socket and that translates to not ever wanting to engage in any sort of electrical play. I found my self in this situation until I played with a Dom who allowed me to express my fears before asking if I wanted to try a TENS Unit. Yea I fearfully tried it and found that my fear was baseless and what I considered a hard limit was broken, still have a healthy respect for electricity yet will eagerly be wired to a TENS Unit again.

As to having a cattle prod used on me, that I will have to veto. I have seen the 'kick" it produces and will be too uncomfortable and highly unwilling to want to experience it myself. Though if others wish to try it then more power to them as they have way more courage than I have. I know my comfort levels are and when I feel it is necessary to push them.
