Have you read at least one non-fiction book related to BDSM and/or power dynamics?

If yes, what was your favorite?

I've read a few and while I can't say I have a favorite, "Manual Creation" by MasterFireMaam stands out as one that held my interest.

ResidentSadist -> RE: At Least One (10/2/2010 9:05:43 PM)

I have read over a dozen non-fiction BDSM books.  The one liked best was  Different Loving.

[image]http://residentsadist.com/rsdraft/pics-books/diflov.gif[/image]

I think it was timing that makes me pick this book.  It was 1993, BDSM wasn't quite a fad yet and BDSM wasn't as heavily polluted by the bias of so many tourists.   It was a "my kink is ok and your kink is ok" kinda' world and the book reflected that in the unbiased, non-judgmental interviews that toured several branches of the BDSM tree.

It may not be the best book written on the topic.  Gloria's (author) writing style certainly didn't give it the impact or popularity of its fictional couterparts . . . but her lifestyle, community spirit and participation were admirable.

sexyred1 -> RE: At Least One (10/2/2010 9:14:52 PM)

I have read a ton of books. But I guess I am different than most of the replies here in that the books that affected me the most are not non fiction how to books, but more erotic literature.

I have learned more about myself and my desires from novels than from any how to be a sub book.

 -thinking about it ive used this place as a major resource for learning and understanding stuff, pretty much all you need to know is right here.

MrBukani -> RE: At Least One (10/3/2010 5:38:00 AM)

No I didnt
I have read a lot of books but I am auto-didact so I rather learn myself.
I am a writer and dont want to be influenced to much by others, cause I am creating my own style.
And last but not least. A lot of talk about training and how much you have to learn blah bladiblah.
Being dominant or submissive is pretty natural, so is bdsm, its not rocketscience.
Rather learn tricks from people then books.

kiwisub12 -> RE: At Least One (10/3/2010 5:44:52 AM)

When i met my first dom, i read every book he had on bdsm - and my favourite was "Screw the Roses" - mainly because it was low keyed and humourous   -  because i try not to take much of anything too seriously. I am a researcher with subjects close to my heart, and can read three books in two days - as i did when i found out one of my kids had/has ADD  -  which i had never heard of .

I take the info. that resonates with me and leave the rest.    Love books!

RedBottomGirl26 -> RE: At Least One (10/3/2010 5:54:35 AM)

In reply to Kiwisub12: I have read most of that book too, I will admit, I skipped to the chapters which interested me, but yet I found myself reading things (like on sadists that perhaps I normally wouldn't care to read much about). I also found it to be well-written and I enjoyed the humor as well, it was very informative and I felt like I got to personally know the authors because they were not obfuscating their words, but just saying it like it was, or known to them. I read somewhere the male co-author of the book [Phillip] [:(] and that instantly made me feel sorry for Molly (the co-author of the book), the way she described their relationship, seemed like a one in a million shot really. I heard they used to give lectures, but every sense he passed away, this might have...halted some of the progress they seemed to be making as far as educating others. There is also another book "Erotic Surrender" which I also really identified with, I recommend that book [I think that author used to be Domme, but she eventually switched to sub, but I found that a little more confusing, generally a Dom or sub, won't switch roles unless they are a switch; but it confuses me when people change their roles all the time, or the reasons why they do rather?]

whiteslavebitch -> RE: At Least One (10/3/2010 6:21:18 AM)

I've read approximately 10 non-fiction BDSM books. My favorites are:

Screw the Roses Send Me the Thorns

Slavecraft: Roads to Erotic Servitude

thatsub -> RE: At Least One (10/3/2010 7:13:01 AM)

There were some books that I read, but one that comes to mind as my favorite is Venus in Furs by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch

~fast repy~

After a good sleep, I wanted to add to my previous post.

Yes, I own, what seems to be the required reading, "A Different Loving" along with a few other BDSM related books. Honestly, "Screw the Roses" isn't one of them. The books that have inspired me when it comes to BDSM activities usually are practical books like those relating to knot tying or anatomy and physiology.
For the D/s side of things, which I find much more interesting at the moment, inspiration comes from books that focus on building personality qualities of leadership and character, etiquette and houshold structure/non-sexual service.

For a while, I've been fascinated with Japanese culture and shibari/kinbaku along with the history of the Victorian era as it relates to the domestic dynamics of Master/Mistress and servant. The majority of BDSM or "lifestyle" books...both fiction and non-fiction...seem to usually broach these topics in a role-play sense. There are a few exceptions...."Manual Creations" being one of them and "Erotic Slavehood" by Christina Abernathy another.

I have read quite a few BDSM oriented books.  Most of my early reading was due to a search for knowledge about the strange desires that I had.  Once I discovered BDSM organizations, I started attending seminars and demonstrations, and that replaced books as a source of knowledge.  Of course, we now have the internet and DVD's, so that is also a more practical source of info than searching for BDSM books which are often hard to find.

Interestingly, over half of the books that I've read were done at the request of a Domme.  I seem to attract Dommes who like to make their subs read books and report on what they've read.  Some of the books that I remember include:

-Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns (Phillip Miller & Molly Devon)
-Different Living (William & Gloria Brame)
-Female Domination (Elise Sutton)
-The Femdom Experience (Elise Sutton)
-Showing You the Ropes (Two Knotty Boys)

DesFIP -> RE: At Least One (10/3/2010 9:16:03 AM)

The Topping Book. Bought ages ago. Was interested in what he gets out of this, nice read but didn't really answer the question.
Why no others? At the time there was a great alternative book store in town, alas long since gone.

Speaking of nonfiction books, anyone have a suggestion for an anatomy one for suspension? He's contemplating building a frame in the garage and he can do that part of suspension safely but we don't know about pressure points and such.

DomImus -> RE: At Least One (10/3/2010 10:15:29 AM)

I haven't read any of the non-fiction BDSM titles. I suffered through about the first third of the first Marketplace book at the request of an ex-partner who thought that would be better than just talking to me about her submission. It was dreadful. I think I've learned farm more by simple trial and error than I might learn from books like Different Loving although it might be interesting to thumb through it one day and see what all the hoopla is about. Sometimes I think these books end up on people's required reading lists simply because they saw them on someone else's required reading list or because the selection of this type of genre is so limited.

switch2please -> RE: At Least One (10/3/2010 10:58:34 AM)

Different Loving, The Ethical Slut, A Hand in the Bush, a couple guides to female domination and one to submission (the titles escape me), a bondage book borrowed from a friend, a few somewhat more generic sex manuals, and lots of forum posts/online articles/magazine articles. I recommend The Ethical Slut most often.
I like knowing about what I like, being good at what I like to do, and I read constantly anyway...so why not? Often it's not new material to me - I've already read about it or done it - but sometimes there are intriguing ideas or different perspectives, and it's an interesting topic to learn about.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: At Least One (10/3/2010 3:18:31 PM)

I read the Guy Baldwin and other gay leather stuff, many years ago, and some of Dossie Easton 's stuff--skimmed only.

MaamJay -> RE: At Least One (10/4/2010 12:27:23 AM)

I borrowed Screw the Roses from friends when I first got into bdsm and enjoyed it for its simplicity and humour. I read The Loving Dominant as that resonated with the kind of Domme I saw Myself as being and enjoyed much of that too. I was given the book Private theatre : personal observations and revelations of a dominatrix by an Australian pro-Domme, Mistress J, by a sub boy I played with and found it fascinating to find out how different it is being a pro-Domme. Mistress J readily admits that it is entirely different for a paying client than for a lifestyle sub and that Her role is primarily to create 'Private Theatre' ... a play geared to Her client's desires but which She can also take some pleasure in. I also bought Sacred Journey: A Bdsm Love Story by Mistress Mani, which detailed the journey She and Her sub took into bdsm. Again, lots of powerful insights there, and I was so sad to see Her former sub 91 on a personal contact site some years later, theirs had seemed like such a strong relationship. In addition I have read a lot of nonfiction on the web, particularly appreciating the writings of Mistress Steele on Steel Door.

Whilst I have learned more techniques from workshops, and undoubtedly developed My own style through picking up some ideas and rejecting others, I definitely appreciated the opportunities these books afforded to stimulate My own thinking.

I've read a few. The Loving Dominant, Different Loving, The New Bottoming Book, and a book on consensual slavery but I can't remember what the name of it was. I'm not exactly sure which was my favorite.

crazyml -> RE: At Least One (10/4/2010 1:42:40 AM)

~FR~

The Loving Dominant was given to me by a partner, it was ok.

I've read fairly widely around the topic of sexuality though not in an explicitly BDSM context.

Favourite authors on the topic of sexuality - Naomi Wolf, Greer and Anais Nin.

But, truth be told - most of my reading on kink has been in places like this (god help me).

ranja -> RE: At Least One (10/4/2010 2:09:36 AM)

recently i read Arjan Erkel - ontvoerd - which means kidnapped

A Dutch man who in 2002 was taken at gunpoint in Dagestan (a Russian republic where he had a job in the medical sector) and kept at different and very shabby locations by some fanatic captors for a total of 607 days before being released

it was a very interesting read... the only pity about it was that i could not really feel the angst he must have felt because i obviously already knew he made it out alive.

read screw the roses too
and the sexual life of Catherine M... not so much about power more about her sexual freedom... and after reading (most of) that i finally accepted my own sluttiness

Oh and 'the joy of sex' by Alex Comfort... not about BDSM at all... or power exchange, but a very good book to learn the art of love making... and a good lover will have power hahaha
