PeonForHer -> Hugh Laurie's American Accent in 'House'. (10/7/2010 5:50:43 PM)

What do Americans think of this?  Sounds authentic to me, but then I'm a Brit.  Dick Van Dyke and the all those involved in the making of the film thought his 'Cockney' accent was fine in Mary Poppins.

Stephen Fry went to visit him a while ago.  He reported that Laurie speaks in his 'House' accent 24/7 - getting it right is that important to him.

Just wondering . . .

Sounds perfectly North American to me - East Coast at that.

PeonForHer -> RE: Hugh Laurie's American Accent in 'House'. (10/7/2010 6:12:08 PM)

Good - that's reassuring, somehow.

Another thing:  I hear that he's a bit of a hit with the ladies out there.  This is astonishing to a lot of us here in the UK because he was only known as a very goofy kind of comedian beforehand.  Now, wrinkly as he is, as well . . . he's the 'thinking woman's hottie' (as I read it, somewhere)?

thornhappy -> RE: Hugh Laurie's American Accent in 'House'. (10/7/2010 6:52:43 PM)

Yep, I'd only heard of him in Blackadder, and he was a silly guy.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Hugh Laurie's American Accent in 'House'. (10/7/2010 6:59:07 PM)

I was watching Fry & Laurie in tbhe 80's, and those Jeeves & Wooster shows were fab!

His accent is as close to authentic as I have ever heard from a Brit. This from a person who has heard a llot of british actors try and fail.

Twoshoes -> RE: Hugh Laurie's American Accent in 'House'. (10/7/2010 7:12:30 PM)

I think it's because he's charismatic, 'fucked up', pretending to be insensitive and witty that he's appealing to the "thinking woman".

And I'm only saying this because my friends have talked about him. But that was years ago when that show was both new and more popular.

I have loved PG Wodehouse for over forty years.  Nobody will ever come closer to epitomizing Bertie Wooster than Laurie.

Actually, I thought Hugh Laurie was an Aussie.....but yeah, I'd do him!  Except, he'd hafta speak in his native accent  ::SWOOOOON::

And I mean I'd do Hugh, not House......I'd probably shoot House......

from a dedicated House viewer!!!!!  I even watch the reruns!

sunshinemiss -> RE: Hugh Laurie's American Accent in 'House'. (10/8/2010 4:03:10 AM)

I don't think, Peon, that it's Hugh Laurie that the gals are all atwitter about.  I think it's Dr. House, the character.  The character is brilliant, sensitive, and broken.  He cares for his patients in his own weird way.  He sees beyond the surface.  That all is like cocaine for caregivers.  Ohhhh if I live him enough, I can fix him!  It's like gambling.  You play and you play and every now and then you get something beautiful back.  It's enough to hook you.

True sex appeal from an actor depends on more than one role/character.

best,
sunshine

*eta:  He sounds East Coast USA to me as well.  Not New York, not NJ, not Philly... maybe DC area?

tazzygirl -> RE: Hugh Laurie's American Accent in 'House'. (10/8/2010 4:04:07 AM)

Ah hell, i would do House in a second! The man is definite YUM!

Somewhat alarmingly, my friend's 17 year old daughter used those words exactly.

I've heard that 'House' is the most popular TV series in the world at present.   This is genuinely cheering news for me - because, unlike most widely-popular series, it's intelligent, thoughtful and doesn't bullshit. It says good things about humans in general to me that it's so well-liked.

barelynangel -> RE: Hugh Laurie's American Accent in 'House'. (10/8/2010 4:14:02 AM)

He is Aussie.  And everytime i have heard him outside of the show, he speaks in his native accent.  Maybe when he was first learning the American accent he spoke it quite a lot but i believe he speaks his native accent when not on the show.

I love House, the character.  While i have no issue with Aussie dude, he doesn't hold the same appeal for me as House.  But then again, i don't think i would do House either. But i do enjoy watching him as House.

Until i actually heard him speak in his native accent, i had no clue his native accent wasn't the American one he uses on House.

He is Aussie.

Not per everything I've read, angel. Born in Oxford and schooled at Cambridge.

I love watching House because of Hugh, he is amazzing and is definitely not from Oz, hes a true brit,
he is definitely better looking as he gets older, I love his evilness, humour, in HOuse
I loved him in Blackadder, (all of them but specially 2. )
Fry and Laurie , very 80s and fun, and Jeeves and Wooster, he was excellent as was Fry, who I love in QI
With Ben Elton, Rowan atkinson, Stephen Fry, Tony Robinson, they were the 80s version of the Python team to me.
Nice to see his success go outside comedy

hertz -> RE: Hugh Laurie's American Accent in 'House'. (10/8/2010 6:25:12 AM)

House is a bit of a one trick pony. I'm amazed people still watch. Every episode is more or less the same as the last...

On saying that, I thought the first series was great. I've just got a bit bored with it now.

House Factoid: The theme tunes for 'House' in the UK and US are different.

GreedyTop -> RE: Hugh Laurie's American Accent in 'House'. (10/8/2010 6:29:13 AM)

myotherself -> RE: Hugh Laurie's American Accent in 'House'. (10/8/2010 11:43:24 AM)

Would it be wrong to tell everyone now that I met him about 10 years ago...:-D

He's definitely 100% British, with a to-die-for cut-glass accent.

And rather cute too..lol
