TheHeretic -> How low will they go? (10/11/2010 7:42:26 AM)

So the Democrats have their new 'hit piece' ad out, accusing the Chamber of Commerce of using foreign contributions to try and sway the election. What shocking bit of evidence do they have to suport such a claim?

quote:

David Axelrod, the president’s senior adviser, was asked Sunday by Bob Schieffer on “Face the Nation” on CBS if he had any evidence that the chamber was using secret foreign funds to influence the election.

“Well, do you have any evidence that it’s not, Bob?” Mr. Axelrod replied.

New York Times story, so you have to get towards the end

Who would have thought that the guy who was going to end the pettiness of our politics would roll in the slime like this?

Probably got it from the death squads that are denying the republicans health care.

Now, they have a VERY LARGE foreign fundraising focus, and I think it is a fair question to see that the vast sums they are spending are indeed within the law, and they can sequester the sums spent on domestic politics with clear domestic money.

I await their response.

I rather think that since their inception was due to the government financing them, that they should be out of it altogether, but I suspect I am in the minority with that opinion.

Democrats are truly evil Richie and you have a right to be upset.

Can I offer you a Midol?

TheHeretic -> RE: How low will they go? (10/11/2010 8:24:41 AM)

Ok, Ron. I see you saying they are no different from the Republicans, but doesn't that contradict the fundamental promise President Obama made when he stepped onto the national stage 4 years ago?

Whatever happened to that guy? Was he lying to us all then, or was he just stunningly ignorant of who he really was?

mnottertail -> RE: How low will they go? (10/11/2010 8:32:08 AM)

I dont see how he fundementally promised there would not be political infighting, nor specious arguments, nor hyperbole, nor adverserial attacks.....

I mean I speak for me, and can philosophise over 'How It Ought to Be' but can not control the behavior of 300 million people.

So, no.....

tazzygirl -> RE: How low will they go? (10/11/2010 8:32:28 AM)

lol... i find this all amusing that the Republicans would be so upset at having their own game turned against them.

Oh, I'm not upset, Tazzy. I'm just wondering if any of ya'll want to try to reconcile this bit of October shamelessness with the promise that brought our President to fame and power. Does anybody remember him saying this at the 2004 DNC?

Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or do we participate in a politics of hope?

mnottertail -> RE: How low will they go? (10/11/2010 8:48:01 AM)

Clearly he had a question (rhetorical perhaps, but thats why there is a question mark there, thats what that punctuation indicates).  I think that it went south after the general meeting he held with the republicans on healthcare.  So, I think we have our answer.

I said Republicans, as noted in your OP, not the republicans on these boards because, other than you, none have spoken up... which really doesnt surprise me... but it also doesnt lend me the ability to claim any republicans here are upset or not.

Live by the hatchet peace, die by the hatchet.

Fact: The US Chamber of Commerce's general fund contains money derived from dues paid by foreign corporations.
Fact: The US chmaber of Commerce's general fund is the source of the money being used to buy its campaign advertising.
Fact: It is illegal to directly or indirectly raise money from foreign corporations for political purposes.

What precisely is wrong with pointing out those facts?

I must be misunderstanding you, Ron. Are you saying that he dumped his whole philosophical approach to what sort of President he was going to be, the very first time something didn't go according to plan?

tazzygirl -> RE: How low will they go? (10/11/2010 9:45:01 AM)

First time? From the party of "NO"?

Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. Acceptance speech - 11/04/08

Why do you find such joy in the betrayal of the dream you supported, O59?

No, I am not saying that.  You are trying to make a specious as well as wholly dishonest arguement here.  I sorta think that it goes a little beyond a one-time recalcitrance.

And you of the 'reasoned right' find that questioning basic assumptions by putting adversarial mischaracterizations on them as wholesome as apple fucking pie, and feign great outrage when one asks a simple and obvious question.

So, what I am saying is why is the fucking Chamber of Commerce laying money on candidates rather than figuring out how to find ways to get this country back to work and selling american goods and services globally (which I assume is going to be close to their stated (but not actual) mission)? And further, are they indeed obeying the rules of that political moneygiving?

How fuckin low is that Rich?

Have you stopped beating your wife?

Thats whats wrong with it. Along with your first "fact". The chamber says that foreign contributions are strictly segregated as required by law. Axelgrease does not claim otherwise.

Doesn't surprise me either, the thread has only been up for about 5 hours or so and I don't think most people sit on CM waiting for a new thread to respond to.

I am also not surprised to see people saying "the republicans did it first". That seems to be the standard answer when a democrat is called on their actions.

As to the OP....Now it's possible that they will come up with proof of wrongdoing and if so, I hope they take action, but until they have some kind of proof, just saying the other side can't prove them wrong doesn't settle anything.

mnottertail -> RE: How low will they go? (10/11/2010 2:39:07 PM)

I don't think that anyone has pointed that out in root cause analysis.  Not me, for sure.

Do you have a reference to this claim by the Chamber?
