Neil Gaiman
Clive Barker (I've just read Damnation Game)
Kim Newman (Dead Travel Fast is just awesome)
Stephen King (His best stuff, imo, is the Dark Tower series and Eyes of The Dragon)
Robert E. Howard
I also have a love of comics and some comic writers I love are:
Steve Gerber
Jack Kirby
Alan Moore
Pat Mills
Those are only a few of my faves.
At the moment I am reading some more Jack Kirby comics, but the next book I will read will be Le Morte D'Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory.

I am the same way -- i can't get into Nora, even the recent Big Jack that has Dallas in it, i have a hard time with lol.

The first book i read of JD Robb was Survivor in Death, which is another favorite.   Eve and Roarke are two people who don't live their lives politically correct.  They both have tempers from hell, he knows well how to "handle" her which god is such a turn on in a man lol.  They fight, they get seriously pissed, they have a very physical relationship and that is an additional turn on because its not politically correct but seems raw and natural and they don't apologize for it.  And their love isn't the floofoo type of ohhhh he respects me but a deep love that is built on natural instinct rather than what is "correct."

My favorite line is when they think they are about to die and Eve says to Roarke, "If we don't make it, i love you and blah blah blah."  And later when they do make it (no spoiler as there are books after this book) Roarke is tranqued due to medical treatment and he says to Eve, "I love you and blahh blahh blah."

Okay again, i can go on and on lol.

The entire Vampire Chronicles series...love it. 
Some Stephen King..mostly the mind game ones, some of his stuff scares me! 

I wondered..no one mentioned it so I will ask;  Does anyone Kindle?   As the price keeps dropping (now half of what it was when first introduced), it's much more affordable and a GREAT idea...I love being able to take lots of books with me when I travel, but take up almost no space in the suitcase!

Status: offline 		I love JD Robb, too. I so enjoy the relationship between Dallas and Roarke. They might be married, but they are so hot for each other. (I love the sex scenes). They even get on each other's nerves, and snap at each other. Like a real couple.

Status: offline 		Lisa, I've thought about getting a Kindle, but there's just something about holding the book in your hands, the weight, heft, the smell....especially old books.  I'd really miss that.....besides, I read in bed, and when KB wants me to get up, he pushes the books off the bed or nightstand.  I don't know how much banging around a Kindle could take.

That'd be a problem for me as well: when they invent an ebook reader that bounces if you drop it on a tile floor, and doesn't short out if you drop it in the bath, I'm up for that. Until then...

Another writer who does excellent fantasy series is Tanith Lee. The Four books of Paradys are wonderful, and the Blood Opera (which annoyingly didn't get finished) is even better. The Flat Earth series is pretty great as well.

Status: offline 		I clearly have very different reading tastes- haven't read any of the series mentioned yet, and can't stand a bunch of the authors (S. King, Ken Follett, Anne Rice, Janet Evanovich)

I have a friend of mine who's a librarian, and she gave me a few book a couple of years ago that I finally got around to reading-

Highly recommended- The Book Thief- Markus Zusak. I think kids are reading this in school, but it's a gripping story for an adult as well. The story involves a poor German girl growing up in Nazi Germany whose family harbors a Jew.

Not bad- Between Silk and Cyanide - Leo Marks- nope, nothing about D/S but a well written autobiography of a code writer during WWII. For folks that like puzzles, this shows how some puzzles can mean life or death. Its also very well written. Amazingly enough, the guy went on to work in the movie biz. Also, one of Ken Follett's recent novels, Hornet Flight, was based on events mentioned in this book.

Didn't like- Out Stealing Horses -Pers Petterson. Although its nicely written, it's a wandering biography about a character that ultimately doesn't interest me much. Widower in Norway.

Read not long ago- The Night Inspector, Frederick Busch- superb novel set in post Civil War New York, that weaves in Herman Melville. The boating chase scene as a finale is inaccurate, but only a sailor would catch it. Very well written and with a lot of historical fact.

Devil in the White City- Erik Larson- Great history of the Chicago World's Fair and the serial murderer whose exploits gripped the country.

One of my favorite authors- William Gibson, whose last three novels are intertwined: Pattern Recognition, Spook Country, and now Zero History- have to read the last. This guy can write.

OK, that's enough for now...

I LOVE books. I have too many books, and I could get lost for hours in an old, musty, used bookstore. Or a brand new shiny one, for that matter. Nah....I could never use a Kindle.

Yah, I really like Carl Hiassen too. I remember Dave Barry tried, and failed to come up with his blend of reporting and humor. He's one of my favorite mystery writers. For older stuff, I still like Leslie Charteris.

Status: offline 		The last book set that really lit me up was the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy by Philip Pullman. Obviously, the film did the books no favours whatsoever - what a mess, but the ideas crammed into the tale are simply amazing. The Daemon thing, and the idea of 'Dust',  I found especially inspiring. There's a wiki page with a synopsis of each book - but if you have a serious intent to read the set, I'd avoid: it's nice to discover the plot on your own.

Titles? 'Northern Lights' (in the US 'The Golden Compass'), 'The Subtle Knife' and 'The Amber Spyglass'

Thomas Hardy is my all-time favourite writer.

Status: offline 		Sookie Stackhouse books are good, much better than the shows. But I prefer one of her other series, the Aurora Teagarden True Murders instead.

And I love Nora Roberts but can't get into her Robb crime books.

Status: offline 		I just finished the second of Steig Larsson's trilogy (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, etc). I am shocked that I can't stop reading these books! I am not a fan of intrigue and violence, and these books have plenty of both. I just love Lisbeth Salander, though. Can't get enough of her!

But my usual reading tastes tend toward Margaret Atwood (my absolute favorite author), Doris Lessing, Jane Smiley, Jane Hamilton, Toni Morrison. I also LOVE Mark Twain! Morrison's Beloved and Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn are my two favorite books.

I read a book a couple of months ago called The Zookeepers Wife that was about hiding Jews in Poland during WW II. Non fiction that read like a good novel.

  - the Dune series by Frank Herbert (but only up to God Emperor - after that they're not worth it, and anything by Brian Herbert is disqualified)
  - the Earth's Children series by Jean M. Auel
  - Otherland by Tad Williams
  - Anne Rice's vampire series and the Sleeping Beauty trilogy
  - the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy by Douglas Adams (even though the trilogy is really five books, that's part of its' charm)
  - Ender's Game and all the sequels/spinoffs by Orson Scott Card
  - Lord of the Rings by J.R. Tolkein
Off the top of my head, that's about it... Nerd swagger!

ETA: I used to adore the Redwall series by Brian Jacques as well, but I outgrew it and gave the complete series away (or what had been published at the time) to free up space for more books

Jean Auel,  Earth's Children--Prehistoric people

For single books

Ruth Beebee Hill,   Hanta Yo--The Lakota tribe of US Indians just before the white man's influence
William Horwood,  Duncton Wood--Believe it or not, a religious type book with moles as the characters.
