WyldHrt -> Novels- favorite authors/ books/ series? (10/14/2010 4:20:58 PM)

It's been a little while since we had one of these threads, and we have some new members who may have missed the last one.
So, what novel(s) are you reading and who are your fave authors, series, etc?
I just finished rereading 'Eyes of Prey' by John Sandford and have 'Executive Privilege' by Philip Margolin in the queue.

My favorites are:
John Sanford's 'Prey' series with Lucas Davenport
Patricia Cornwell's 'Kay Scarpetta' series
Anne McCaffrey's 'Dragonriders of Pern' series
Philip Margolin's books; all of them but particularly the ones with Amanda Jaffe
Steve Martini's 'Paul Madriani' series
David Eddings' 'Ruby Knight' and 'Tamuli' series

Also a big fan of Tami Hoag, Dean R Koontz, Steven King, Jack Higgins and Nancy Taylor Rosenberg.

Christine Feehan's Dark series. The basis doesn't make much sense, that if they do something unethical they turn into a different species but they're fun
J D Ward Brotherhood of the Dagger
Terry Pratchett has a new Tiffany Aching book.
Janet Evanavitch (sp) the Stephanie Plum books and I like the new spin off with Diesel getting to be the star.
David Eddings, all of them but Ruby Knight series are the best

I usually read several books at once, depending on what room I'm in when I pick it up.

Right now:

Stephen King, Under the Dome
Henry David Thoreau, Walden
Stephanie Meyer, Twilight (Again)

I will always read Stephen King, except for the Gunslinger books - hate them. I was completely smitten by the Twilight series because yes...I love Edward. And I love anything Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook is only the best love story ever) or John Grisham, because he just goes down so easy. Apart from that, mostly non-fiction books aiding me in my eternal quest to find the meaning of life, which I'm convinced is found in outer space.

Oh, I've said too much.

Stephen Hunter's Bob Lee Swagger series
Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp series
Lee Child's Jack Reacher series
Preston Child's Pendergast series
Brad Thor's Scot Harvast series

David & Leigh Eddings are personal faves. I lean towards The Belgariad, myself.

L.E. Modesitt's "Recluce" series.

Kim Stanley Robinson's "Red Mars", "Green Mars", "Blue Mars" trilogy. Currently re-reading these.

One of the few things I miss about living in a bigger place is having a book stashed in every room.... well, that and having a bathroom big enough for its own bookshelf [:D]

I prefer his short stories, but love many of his novels. I did skip the Gunslinger books, though

I like the movies, but have only read the second book (loaned by a friend). I liked the writing style and storyline, but have to admit wanting to reach out and slap the crap out of Bella more than once. After about 100 pages, the whining gets kind of old. That said, the fact that Jacob is way hotter than Edward might have something to do with it... [;)]

Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp series

Brad Thor's Scot Harvast series
Diana Gabaldon Outlander series
Orson Scott Card's Ender books and Seventh Son books

I am getting into the Sookie Stackhouse series, and I liked the Twilight books too.

Harry Potter.

I'm reading one of the Harry Potters.
Cold Mountain
Jane Eyre

I'm saving up to get a Nook. I got one for Shore and he seems to like it.
It will make reading multiple books easier for me and I won't have to lug around big novels.
Plus I like to read a few chapters from each depending on my mood.

barelynangel -> RE: Novels- favorite authors/ books/ series? (10/15/2010 6:08:39 AM)

I really like the Christine Feehan books -- but the Dark series has been irritating me with all the "Carpathian language" she puts in there more and more.  I also don't like she puts her dark series in hardback first for 6 months to a year.  So all in all on many levels the dark series is annoying me lol.  But i am waiting impatiently for Dimitri and Skyer's book.  i wrote her and asked her if she can't cut down on all the "carpathian language" in the books, if she would do so for that book lol.

I do enjoy her witch books -- her last one for Elle was raw even for me-->  Hidden Currents.  The continuation wasn't that bad either.  The waterbound was pretty interesting as it deals with a high functioning autistic woman.

It took me a while to get into the Ghostwalker series but those are good also.

Of course i recommend all of the JD Robb in death series.  The next one comes out November 2 -- yeah!!  i really like all of them and i have yet to come across one where i finished it saying -- eh.  But one of my favorites in the series is Origin in Death.  It deals with cloning and genetic manipulation.

One of my favorite books is called Third Twin by ken Follett.  Its interesting as it explores in the fiction the balance of nature versus nurture in criminality but also genetic manipulation.

My favorite cheesy romance books is Whitney, My Love.  Was the first book i read as a young teen wherein i realized i wanted dominant men in my life -- not BDSM lol but dominance without the need for ultra submission from the woman.

I've enjoyed all the Sidney Sheldon books and knew we lost a great writer when he passed.

Finally, my friend recommended a bookd called Redeeming love by Francine Rivers.  Its from her church group book club so i am a little skeptical but its set in 1850s where "men sold their souls for a bag of gold and women sold their bodies for a place to sleep."  Its about a girl who was sold into prostitution as a child, learns to hate men and feels empty and dead inside, she meets a man who marries her but she freaks out when she starts to love him and runs.

Okay i can go on  and on, so i will stop now.

Greedy -- World without End?

And yes, how can you forget JD Robb lol.  i just have to say -- i want me a Roarke.  I love their relationship and Dallas cracks me up with her flummoxed view of friends and interacting with people and relationships.

Roarke's question of the day -->  If you are having a conversation with your clone, does that constitute talking to yourself?

Nobody mentioned Anne Rice....I love everything she has ever written.
Brotherhood of the Black Dagger because all the vampires are sexy, dominant, and so well-endowed.
Stephanie Plum series because the stories are so damn funny.
Sookie Stackhouse, ditto, and the sex scenes are good.
A Year in Provence took me to a place I've always wanted to visit.
The Glass Castle gave me a bit of insight into a family dealing with mental illness.
The Velvet Swing....at least I think that is the name of the novel about a lesbian coming of age in the 1920s. It still haunts me.

Otherwise Im still reading lots of old stuff
Stephen King( I just finished Cell)
Clive Barker
Richard Laymon,
Patricia Cornwells Jack the ripper book

soul2share -> RE: Novels- favorite authors/ books/ series? (10/15/2010 8:09:44 AM)

I have devoured the Sookie books....I get them as soon as they come out, I found them late.  I've probably read each one like 5 times, and they haven't gotten old yet.

I've read the entire House of Night series and Twilight, as much as I've read Sookie......yeah, they were written for tweens, but the concept for the HON series is really kind of novel...no pun intended.  As far as which team I'm on, gimme Emmett anyday!  I read Janet Evanovich for laughs, in fact, right now, Ten Big Ones is on the bed getting read again.  mmmmmmmm, Ranger......

Funny, I can't seem to get into Nora Roberts, but JD Robb, I love!  I haven't read anywhere near all, heck, half!. of her books, I should really start from the first one just so I can follow the whole polt lines.

Stephen King rocks...just reread The Colorado Kid, it was sort of a novella.....and just left me hanging there....I read it again because I got in to the Haven on Syfy.  I can't get into the Dark Tower series, tho.....not much for sci-fi here.  Grisham, always a good read.
