You can steal pics or use Photoshop, but it's blatantly obvious if you meet someone and their appearance is radically different.
If you never meet in person or use webcams, or talk on the phone (if the issue is gender impersonation)...then there's not really an issue, is there? If your interaction is online-only then it's almost purely fantasy anyway. Would you rather believe your Mistress is a svelte sexy blonde with massive tits and a perfect ass...or a big hairy bear in his mother's basement?

No offense to big hairy bears - and if you have the balls to admit living in someone else's basement, good for you!

Nnytheangel -> RE: The issue of pictures in profiles (10/16/2010 3:19:39 PM)

It's not an issue if you never meet. Whatever goes on in your head is..what's in your head. The problem with faking it is more often than not if you're fairly good, people then do want to meet, heh. That's about the point when the fantasy falls apart. Easier just to be honest from the get-go, but this is the internet and the wonderful thing about it is you can be who or what ever you wish. This is why I take photos as just that. They're pictures, they aren't representative of reality, though they may indicate personality as mentioned previously in the thread.

switch2please -> RE: The issue of pictures in profiles (10/16/2010 3:25:44 PM)

So if you had wonderful exchanges with someone on this site, felt a connection, and decided to meet - but they looked completely different - you would just take it in stride? No shock, annoyance, anger, disappointment, or anything?

Nnytheangel -> RE: The issue of pictures in profiles (10/16/2010 3:57:15 PM)

Pretty much. I am a reserved individual and rarely prone to outbursts save in literary form. I've experienced quite a bit in my comparatively short time on this planet and manage to maintain control of my emotional state. Granted the downside to this is that I appear 'cold' but that is far from the intention. It's an inherent philosophy of mine that, if I cannot maintain control of myself, then how could I possibly reasonably expect to be able to control another person? I view people as just that, people. It's remarkable how one's perspective changes when you can ignore matters of physical being and treat people as just what they are.

switch2please -> RE: The issue of pictures in profiles (10/16/2010 4:11:00 PM)

I'm also fairly reserved, but I certainly wouldn't be happy. If I share information about myself, including anything in a visual medium, I expect some reciprocation. Even if it's just a platonic coffee date - there doesn't have to be attraction, but I do expect honesty about appearance.

Nnytheangel -> RE: The issue of pictures in profiles (10/16/2010 4:30:41 PM)

Can't say I would be happy, but I tend to not set the bar of expectation too high.

I don't answer profiles or send messages to profiles without a pic posted. Some pics are professional and that tells me they are fakes/scammers and I don't even deal with them.

Not necessarily true. Many of My photos are taken by a professional artistic photographer who also happens to be a dear friend of Mine. I also (as I may have mentioned earlier) used to pose for adult websites, and as such, have a collection of "porn" that is also still Me.

switch2please -> RE: The issue of pictures in profiles (10/17/2010 12:49:28 PM)

...and now you'll get an overwhelming number of users rushing to see your profile [:D]

Nnytheangel -> RE: The issue of pictures in profiles (10/17/2010 1:12:15 PM)

I wasn't going to say that but.... [sm=evil.gif]

Iholdthestrings -> RE: The issue of pictures in profiles (10/17/2010 1:27:12 PM)

I didn't say they were on the profile, did I?

I don't post a photo of my face, and I haver often received unsolicited email from women telling me how beautiful the waterfall in my pic is.

Please dont tell me that isnt your butt climbing that slope. [:(]

lol......I thought he slipping down it , not climbing up.

Twoshoes -> RE: The issue of pictures in profiles (10/17/2010 6:13:24 PM)

Now that I feel like an A+ on a French literature exam (which is impossibly good):
I completely agree that a picture of any kind is an opportunity to present some aspect of yourself. I actually prefer unique-looking pictures. Plain photos or naked ones are informative, but creativity is intriguing.

VC: I've always liked your forum/current profile picture, because the elements themselves (red fingernails, digital camera and the resultant orange hue) are plain, yet the composition is memorable. It makes your forum posts easily identifiable at first glance, while projecting the sentiment "dead sexy" toward your audience. [8D]

switch2please: I really like yours too. Reminds me of the serenity I feel after a nap, as I casually look about, while trying to decide: "Should I move to get up now or... now... no, not yet."

poise: Why are you trying to bewitch us with your unending stream of aesthetically appealing Black&Whites?

Icarys's Matrix avatar screams 'solemnly cool'. (Even though the Matrix stopped being cool after the sequel.)

My favourite picture on this site is actually of a Canadian woman who is fully clothed and lacks a head. (Purely based on the dress.)

Personally, I'll go out of my way to come up with the most convoluted solutions imaginable, although often impractical and time-consuming. So if that last stylized picture* wasn't enough, I was recently inspired to photograph a pair of my shoes. [;)]

Edit: *Actually, the stylized picture completely messed up my facial countours, but at least it made people aware I like jackets.

takemeforyourown -> RE: The issue of pictures in profiles (10/17/2010 7:47:53 PM)

I once communicated with a man via email whom I thought was just perfect for me in mind and spirit. Unfortunately, when he finally sent his photo, he was about 35 years older than I and just not my type. Then I felt badly because I hurt his feelings by turning him down. If there had been a photo to begin with, I could have avoided hurting him by moving on after viewing his profile. Attraction is visual as well as cerebral. I don't think it's wrong to ask for a photo.

Twoshoes -> RE: The issue of pictures in profiles (10/18/2010 12:16:38 AM)

Well, no one has asked me yet. [;)]

rhpaw -> RE: The issue of pictures in profiles (10/18/2010 8:12:19 AM)

Used to have a picture and profile, but get just as much attention with it hidden.

DegradedCreature -> RE: The issue of pictures in profiles (10/18/2010 9:41:37 AM)

For awhile I had removed my pictures out of fear that someone I knew saw them for several reasons, mainly that I enjoy taking humiliating pictures to show the words I am trying to portray among my profile. While I don't have a face picture as my main photo, I am sure it does show my animalistic nature quite well to grab attentions, the next few photos showing me quite well among my face. I realized even if I remove my pictures due to the fact that I've been around long enough many know what i appear like anyways. Even if at any time I do remove my pictures from my profile, I would be comfortable in sending my photos to another person through messages, while I do respect someones privacy to not want to post a picture, I must say there will be a problem if the person I am talking to doesn't want to send me a picture of himself. If I don't see a picture at all, I'd assume that he will want to remain online and not be willing to invest further in a relationship where we shall meet in real time.

You could post a photo of your silhouette, or from the neck down, or with sunglasses, or wearing a demi-mask, or a picture taken from a distance. Take a look at the pictures on some of the other profiles, and you'll see there are plenty of creative options being utilized.

And if all else fails, white rectangle!!!!!

You don't need Photoshop. You just need 2 min, a 3/4 pose and a fudgy camera. The only accurate part about this picture is my ridiculously perfect hair. [8D]

You are so cute, Two Shoes. You look very matrix like with the white bar though. [;)]

I really think the majority of people that demand you have a profile picture up before they even
give you the time of day are more shallow than they are concerned over your being a legitimate person.
Id expect, if there were obvious shared interests between us, followed by some comfortable dialogue,
sharing a picture would not be unreasonable, and it would only be then, if refused, that I may question ones motives.

And if after the obvious shared interests and comfortable dialogue occur pictures are finally exchanged and one party opts out based on the picture are they still shallow? It's all information and it all matters. I don't see why the order in which it is received really matters. If you decline someone up front because or their appearance you are shallow but if you get to know and like them and still ultimately  decline based on their appearance you get points for getting to know them before your shallowness was engaged?

poise -> RE: The issue of pictures in profiles (10/18/2010 7:59:32 PM)

The OP stated that he thought one of the reasons people might demand a photo before even starting a dialogue
was a way to authenticate the person... I was merely suggesting another reason for why they may ask, and am
in no way saying our shallow side should not have it's needs met, regardless of when a photo is shared.
Heck...my shallow side is three dimensional [8D]
