It sounds like you've got your safety protocol in order. If you're cool with it, then you're fine. Know to be safe. That aside, I can't speak about hoods, but chains are a lot of fun. The way I've used them in the past, they were like rope. Because of the difference in shape and structure though, I've never used them for bondage. I can't predict the pinching between links and whether or not they could tighten as a scene goes on. It seems like they could if they started to twist. However, they're great for chaining people to the bed, tying hands and knees together, or chaining them via a collar. In general, chains are a lot heavier than rope or cuffs. They're more physically cumbersome and restricting. I've used two different kinds, some heavier ones and some lighter ones that were called 'decorative' at the hardware store. The decorative ones were less weighty, but looked cooler and made a lot more noise (I find that sound is a big part of the appeal of chains). The other ones were really a hassle to move around with. Very restricting. They were like logging chains or somethig (belonged to a friend, so I don't know the actual size.) Basically, they're a lot of fun and there's some variation and effect that you don't get with rope. Go to Home Depot and check out several types. They're in our favorite section, next to the ropes and across from the hangers. -m
