Does anyone on here have an understanding why people want you to move to YAhoo IM immediately? I assume it present some sort of attack on your PC is possible. Any detection software to that specifically?

I always assumed it was for the quick cam ability? (Not that I would know, of course.)

I always thought it was because the chat feature on CM wasn't that reliable.  At least for me it's not.  There's the cam thing, too.  It's not that hard to create an "anonymous" yahoo identity and say no to the cam.

Sometimes it is a foolish attack on your PC other times it is a way to get you away from the site...to ask for money...to maniplate...and to be as colorful as one wants. I don't use yahoo.

You're not going to get hacked just by using chat. It's also extremely unlikely anything will happen using video chat either. If you're paranoid just don't cam or accept files (duh on this one). Personally I tend to just offer contact info fairly readily, as it's quite a bit easier to get ahold of me using those, than mailing me here (especially because I'm unlikely to be on this site at any place other than my home, and I'm rarely there nowadays).

I totally agree with this. Yahoo IM is much more stable, efficent and instantaneous than any web based chat I've seen. Most web based chat programs are fickle at best, lag, unstable, are resource hogs and frequently make Windows crash.

Sure, there are those with malicious intent, but if you have a decent antivirus and firewall, security shouldn't be that much of an issue. Odds are, if someone can mess up your system over yahoo chat, odds are it was only a matter of time before it happened.

Let's face it, for the most part, we live in a society of instant gratification. Definitely a sign of the times.

This is my reason for wanting to move to yahoo.

I notice the scammers tend to want to go there right off, but I am pretty sure it is for the same reason legitimate users do.  A more direct conversation makes making a connection easier and you can add someone to your yahoo list which makes keeping track of them fairly easy.

One of the best decisions I ever made was to stop using Yahoo (or any IM chat) when getting to know someone - it was a HUGE time sink for me.

You can't really get to know someone on IM - all you can do is read a construct of words created by someone. But without any stimuli from that other person - at the least, his/her VOICE - the best you're doing is identifying with words on a screen.

These days I send a few emails back and forth, and if we seem to connect, pick up the phone for a quick conversation if they're long distance or simply arrange to meet for a drink, if they're local.

I tend to see that if some is pushing me to go to IM, and is unwilling to email and has excuses for not wanting to move to a phone conversation in a reasonable amount of time - there's something else afoot.

As others have said, often it isn't a scam, but for me most often it's to try to get me on a webcam to see if I'll get naked and stick clothespins on my nipples. Eh, not so much.

I've found the same thing through MMO's actually. Really didn't start to actually make solid friends until I ended up using vent and teamspeak. I don't think it's impossible to get to know someone through text, but it's alot more difficult. Lacks the emotional context that we pick up through voice, most of us without realizing it. In general though I've found people are far more reluctant to engage in phone conversation. I suppose alot of people still use published numbers though, and don't have mic's.

I do not use CM chat, because like a lot of folks, it crashes my PC.
I do use Yahoo IM, but only to speak to my Husband from His workplace. This came after a lot of nonsense, though.
I also use a couple of other major networking sites which shall remain unnamed, because they've caused problems for a lot of ppl, but since I don't play app games or talk to people I don't know over there, that isn't an issue for me. Just sayin'.

EDITED for typos..

Ditto. I never use Yahoo or any IM to chat. I find it to be a lazy request. Phone is quicker and more efficient.

One of the reasons I hate IM is because it sucks my time up.  I used to use it a lot, but haven't in years. I don't even like using it with friends.  If someone wants a conversation, they call me, and I can talk on my cell phone - hands free - and still move around my home without being stuck at my laptop.

I never used it with Daddy.  We emailed awhile and then got on the phone, and then met.

My old WindowsME has to access Yahoo through Meebo.  I rarely used it...but am starting to use it a little more often because I haven't been able to get into CM's chatrooms since around April...and just this month lost access to the chatroom within the mail room.

I never ask people to take talking from letters to IM, I'm okay with letters until we take it to the phone or meet up.

I mostly  use gtalk now, but then I only have five people on my list, otherwise I use skype to talk. Yahooo has never been something I used a lot altho I did transfer all my icq (remember that) contacts over to it. I dont use it for mail, so it rarely gets used, there are way to many unwelcome elements for my liking.
To each his own.. I usually tell people I dont yahooo and they move on, those who are really interested in talking will go to one of the others:)

It is convenient and I love IM (Trillian ftw), but I refuse to chat with anyone who I haven't at least held a conversation with. If they say hi and then ask me if I use yahoo then I automatically say no unless I'm in the mood to fuck with someones head. I'm not usually that bored. The phone makes me nervous.

However scammers might try to use yahoo so they can get your email address AND I'm fairly sure there's a plugin on Yahoo that allows auto translation. So the person you're talking to might not necessarily be speaking English.

If someone really wants to know you, they will be willing to send emails. Go directly to chat and it's all sexual.
Someone read my profile, sent me an email mentioning something I had said and claimed he wanted to be a friend. The moment I said I don't have a chat program installed he disappeared. Friends aren't  focused on cybersex.
