That'd stand up as an argument if you hadn't extended your comment from rml specifically to the rather generalised term "liberal church".

I guess you'll find where I accused him of mass murder, and that all smurfs are ignorant lil' gits, too, if you keep imagining things.

PS Perhaps you are a member of the liberal church as well, and therefore feel I insulted your religion?

I find myself very curious to know just what Juan Williams believes to be "Muslim garb"?

There is no Muslim uniform. Muslims live in and come from many cultures, and have a lot of different styles. Pretty much everything that is worn by some Muslims is also worn by non-Muslims. A couple of examples of what I'm talking about:

(1)The nation of Albania is mostly Muslim; that nation is in Europe and shares a border with Italy. The part of NYC that I live has a lot of Italians, and a lot of Albanians. I think the biggest mosque in this area is the Albanian one. These particular Muslims dress and act just like the Italians... except that some of them are even closer to the "guido" stereotype.

(2) On the other end of a spectrum, a lot of people in the US seem to think that turbans and beards are "Muslim garb", but in fact, if you see someone here with a beard and wearing a turban, he is almost certainly a member of the Sikh religion. (I've seen a statistic that 99% of turban-wearers in the US are Sikhs, although I don't know what the source for that is. I do know at least that personally I have never seen a Muslim in the US wearing a turban, except maybe on imam on TV; but I've seen thousands of Sikhs in turbans in person.)  The Sikhs are definitely not Muslims, and in fact have been fighting against extremist Muslims, particularly the ancestors of the Taliban, for hundreds of years. Partly because those Muslims tried to genocide the Sikhs, and they fought back. On top of that, the Sikhs have fought and died to defend freedom of religion of other people as well as themselves.

Mistaking a Sikh for a Muslim is sort of like mistaking an American soldier for a German soldier in WWII: the clothes may seem to be superficially similar, but the language, ethnicity, ideology and values are different.

About turbans: All "baptized" or initiated male Sikhs are required to wear turbans and to refrain from cutting or shaving hair. Some Muslims wear turbans either because it happens to be traditional clothing of their particular nation, or as a sign of high status. Turbans as a mark of high status is cultural to large parts of Asia, the Middle East and northern Africa, without regard to religion. Even in the Jewish Bible, the kings and priests of the Jewish people are said to wear turbans, so apparently they shared that custom in ancient times. It's like that in India: the old maharajahs wore turbans, as did and do the warrior castes such as the Rajputs. In modern Hinduism its customary for men to wear a turban at their wedding, even they don't wear one at any other time. Sikhs adopted the turban from Hindu Aryan tradition to show that all Sikhs were to be considered equal and respectable, no matter what their religious or caste background might have been. Thus, there use of it has nothing to do with Islam... except insofar as many Muslim cultures share the custom of seeing turbans as a mark of high social status.

Hmm... if there IS anything like an actual Muslim uniform, it would lie in the fact that, like its older brother Judaism, in Islam, men are supposed to cover their heads, and so many Muslims - in this country - wear small hats or skullcaps... in many cases, looking like an oversized yarmulke/kippah (the skullcaps worn by observant Jewish men). That being so, it would make more sense to mistake Jews and Muslims for each other, than to mistake Sikhs and Muslims for each other.

But... let's all be smart, and learn how to tell all of these groups from each other. Knowledge is much better than ignorance! One little hint for recognizing a Sikh: they all wear steel bracelets on one wrist, or occasionally both... even the ones who don't wear turbans.

Garb?

Williams was just expressing a lazy minded, bigoted, fearful, unsophisticated and all to prevalent mindset.

One of bin-laden`s hopes was to radicalize Americans against Muslims, enflame relations and spark a war(s).

Williams is just one of bin-laden and radical Islam`s success stories.

Actually, I think I'm leaning towards being a libertarian rather than a died in the wool lefty. I think it was wrong to fire Williams. It would have been nice for him to have been given a chance to explain or elaborate on what he meant before a quicky termination.

Because it was not the first time Williams made these types of controversial comments.

Here is another example, but there are many more.

What Bill O'Reilly Really Told Me - TIME

So, O'Reilly says to me that the reality to black life is very different from the lowlife behavior glorified by the rappers. He told me he was at a restaurant in Harlem recently and there was no one shouting profanity, no one threatening people. Then he mentioned going to an Anita Baker concert with an audience that was half black, and in sharp contrast to the corrosive images on TV, well dressed and well behaved.

I joked with O'Reilly that for him, a guy from Long Island, a visit to Harlem was like a "foreign trip." That's when he brought up his grandma. He said she was prejudiced against black people because she knew no flesh-and-blood black folks but only the one-dimensional TV coverage of black criminals shooting each other and the rappers and comedians glorifying "gangsta" life and thug cool. He criticized his grandmother as irrational for being afraid of people she really did not know.

I defended his grandma.

After watching all those racist, minstrel images of black people, I argued, she is right to buy into stereotypes of blacks as ignorant, oversexed and violent.

I can see you completely missed what he was trying to say.

As far as the current "mistake".  He was on an OPINION show giving his OPINION.  Where is the problem?  He has a right to be dumb and paranoid.

NPR overreacted.  The better path for NPR would have been to open a dialog about why he felt that way on the air, in a series.  One of the things they do so well which is open a discussion and view a subject from different sides.

What your skipping over is the fact there are many people in this country who feel that way.  All they see are the videos of hijackings, beheadings,  militants running around with guns.  They form an opinion about Muslims from the only sources they see.  Much as he was speaking of understanding why some white people form those opinions of blacks when the only source they have is rap videos and gang violence.

I am not worried about the Muslim wearing traditional garb on an airplane.

I am worried about the guy that looks like a everyone else who dress in jeans and t-shirts who has a bomb or some way of causing a catastrophic failure in the aircraft or someway to take control of the aircraft.

There are more whackjobs out there than just Muslim extremists. Remember the rash of hijackings in the sixties? Lets hijack a plane with a bomb for money, or hijack a plane to Cuba.

Fox taps NPR analyst fired for Muslim remarks
By Herald Wire Services
Friday, October 22, 2010

WASHINGTON — NPR fired longtime news analyst Juan Williams, also a commentator on the Fox News Channel, after he said he gets nervous flying with people in Muslim garb. Fox immediately hired him, giving Williams a three-year, $2 million deal.
...

The Los Angeles Times reported yesterday that Williams was promptly hired at Fox, where CEO Roger Ailes called Williams said, “Juan has been a staunch defender of liberal viewpoints since his tenure began at Fox News in 1997,” Ailes said in a statement, adding a jab at NPR: “He’s“an honest man whose freedom of speech is protected by Fox News on a daily basis.”

Three comments:

1.  And the lefties wonder why Fox viewership has steadily increased over the last few years?

2.  Poetic Justice is a real bitch for NPR. $2 million!

3. I agree with Aile's comments.

Again WHO THE FUCK CARES, overall it is a distraction manufactured to divert attention.  Now the question we need to be asking is what does the media want our attention diverted from?

It's a perfect example of liberal political correctness, and how it does not respect divergent opinions, and attempts to impose thought control over the citizens of this country.

It's entirely pertinent.

You are the one attempting to divert attention from it, and my question is: Why?

I am honestly trying to find out why ANYONE cares, the media in this country long ago abdicated their charge of "journalism"  Juan Williams is as much a "journalist" as Mitch Kupchak (there is a name from the past) no one gives a shit what Mitch is doing or even if he is alive, so why the god damned fuss over a simple "talking head".

I gave you a reason that it's important.

You not caring is more a reflection on you and others who "don't care" than the lack of importance of what happened, and why.

You gave not a reason, but an OPINION, and we all know what OPINIONS are like, don't we??  Regarding his getting fired is it possible he just might have violated some clause in his NPR contract?  Neither you nor I know, and will likely never know. I do understand NPR's position...they try to report the news without a political bent. I know this because both conservatives and liberals think they are biased toward the other.

<snip>

Butch

Sorry to burst your bubble about NPR but they have, for all the decades I have been listening to them, been on the left side of the political spectrum. Only the very far left considers them biased towards conservatives This has been known in the industry for a long time. It was probably the most liberal when a former aide or campaign manager (sorry, I just don't remember which and am too short on time to go look it up) was the head of NPR. It actually did move more towards the middle after that and moved closest to the middle after the election after the Republicans took control of both houses of congress for the first time in 40 years. There seemed to be a general media shift to the right about that time as well.

I can say this from many many hours of listening to both Morning Edition (from when it started) and All Things Considered since I was in college. I will still listen to them if I get a chance and over all I enjoy those two programs. Saying it isn't so is like saying that President Obama didn't come out of a city and political party infamous for corruption and crime. You can say it all you want but that doesn't make it true. NPR is still on the liberal side of the political spectrum and the Democratic party of Chicago and Cook County still has more than one politician a year (on the average) go to jail on corruption charges.

Be well....

Yes it is MY opinion, and take this for what you will but Juan Williams getting fired is about as important to me as who the winner of American Idol season 5 is, or season 6, or 7, or 1, 2, 3, and 4 for that matter.   I don't know who they were nor do I care.

Hell I don't even know what "season" that piece of tripe is entering.  I do know we have serious problems in this nation and the more we focus on trivialities like Juan Williams, the less we focus on the possibility of finding the "compromise" that lies in the space between left & right in this country.
