I guess assuming I understand you to be asserting that the tools of science are superior for the investigation of literature????

No...I was speaking in the sense that the presence of literature (and poetry and music etc) at all is explained by science.

If by "investigation" you are referring to comparisons of the form and content within those disciplines, they can and are studied utilizing the scientific method, but the SM has no value in judging the aesthetic value of its content to an indivdual, which is purely subjective.

PatrickG38 -> RE: The Religious Right and the New Atheism (10/26/2010 2:29:20 PM)

Okay, that makes more sense.

GotSteel -> RE: The Religious Right and the New Atheism (10/26/2010 5:58:34 PM)

You've made quite a few offensive claims against new atheism as a movement so far, can you back up any of what you've said or are you just talking out your ass....or maybe shitting out your mouth?

Irony you say...Lets see

You call a faith that many hold dear...quote...Fairy stories...Ridiculous nonsense...Nutcases...Neanderthal superstitions.

I say you seem to be incapable of introspection and.... I... am snide, catty, condescending.

Yes it is Ironic...I don't believe you even realize how fanatical you sound....calling others snide and condescending when you are exactly describing yourself.

The banning of the pledge of allegiance in schools, for example, has had farreaching effects on how the US is viewed by different generations. The Courts have been used to enforce a tyranny of the atheist minority.

What court has banned the Pledge in schools?

PatrickG38 -> RE: The Religious Right and the New Atheism (10/26/2010 7:48:33 PM)

As I stated in a  previous post, the mandatory Pledge was banned by the US supreme court in 1943.  The case against it was brought not by atheists but by Jehovah's Witnesses whose religion objects to pledging to cloth.  Many school districts ignore this law.

Answer no court has banned the pledge of allegiance, but thay have said that schools can not FORCE a student to mouth the words.  Hell I was in about 8th grade when I stopped the routine, 8th grade was 1971-72 school year for me, and I am not any worse for wear.  If the fuckers had left the frigging pledge alone in its original form, I would probably say it rather than keep my mouth shut and thinking: BULLSHIT, BULLSHIT, BULLSHIT.

The Original pledge as written in 1892, and unchanged until 1923:

"I pledge allegiance to my flag and the republic for which it stands: one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all."

Clean, and simple, no bullshit anti-communist inspired reference to god.

In 1923 the wording changed to reflect the nation name, I am still ok with it.

The 1923 version:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States and to the republic for which it stands: one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all."

In 1924 another edit to the pledge was done to add the word AMERICA.

1924 - 1954 version:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands; one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all"

I would have no problem with this other than the unnecessary wordiness.

Then in 1954 the pledge was egregiously defiled because of our fucking paranoia over "godless" communism.  I hope the bastards that did this are rotting in whatever psycho-spiritual place they believed in.

The 1954 edit:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

As I mentioned I began to look on this as a farce by the time I was an 8th grader, and pretty much stopped the non-sense then, and as I got into high-school I began to not even bothering to stand.  I caught some flack but people were beginning to wise up about  forcing this shit on kids.

I’m just a guy that has faith in God but believes that you must find him to deserve him. It is not for me to tell you to look. If you choose to not look it is not for me to judge. You will be no more or less worthy of my respect if you choose to not believe. I respect your right to choose but expect the same in return.

You have every right to resist those that use their religion against you as do I…I reserve the right to worship my God within the laws of my country without interference...campaign and vote accordingly.

You should not be discriminated against or insulted for your lack of faith and I should not be discriminated against or insulted because of my faith.

What are you?

It was?

quote:

On March 11, 2010, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance in the case of Newdow vs Rio Linda Union School District.[27][28] In a 2-1 decision, the appellate court ruled that the words were of a "ceremonial and patriotic nature" and did not constitute an establishment of religion.[27]

Then why this ruling by the court of appeals? The law actually states they cannot force anyone to recite the pledge. But it did not ban the recitation.

I hate having to quote myself, but for the record tazzy I did point out the error, of saying the pledge had been banned, it was ruled, that children can not be FORCED to say it.  To my knowledge it also includes the right of the student to sit quietly, while not partaking of the sham.

Oh definitely, pogo. Im in agreement. Appears the history teacher has some... issues... in this thread and another.

Aresidora -> RE: The Religious Right and the New Atheism (10/26/2010 10:01:09 PM)

Religion is just another way to control the masses.

God probably doesn't like religion either.

I don't think God has a bunch of rules like people do.

Im actually just trying to post to get rid of this vanilla cone[:D]

tazzygirl -> RE: The Religious Right and the New Atheism (10/26/2010 10:02:49 PM)

lol... actually i agree with the rules part. seems all anyone can understand are the formal rules without realizing many of us who are religious dont follow those rules.

PatrickG38 -> RE: The Religious Right and the New Atheism (10/27/2010 5:08:02 AM)

That's why I said a 'mandatory' pledge was banned.

PatrickG38 -> RE: The Religious Right and the New Atheism (10/27/2010 5:09:06 AM)

Did you miss the word mandatory as well?

Nope, teacher we didnt miss the word mandatory. Did you miss the fact that you were not clear? One would think a teacher would make himself absolutely clear when teaching a subject. Guess not.
