As a tattoo is a highly intimate and highly personal thing, I would suggest that you dig into your psyche first, and figure out what he means to you, and how you 'see' that being represented... then, before you take another step, talk to him and show him how you see him and your relationship as a pictorial... see how it resonates with him, and make sure that it won't cause friction between you when he sees you wearing said imagery.
I can tell you that if a servant of mine wants to be inked with something that represents me, there are a specific pool of images from which they can choose--but I won't approve of the image unless I feel that it also represents the servant's own perspectives on my impact on hir life. The reason for this is because, at some point if we are no longer together, that image will remain a part of her for the rest of hir life. Even if xhe gets a cover-up at some point, xhe'll still know what image lies beneath the cover, and what it represents... and for me, I want to be certain that my servant's participation and hir contributions to the relationship are -also- reflected in the imagery that xhe has chosen to represent that combination of hir and me tattooed onto hir skin.
