soul2share -> Calling all computer geeks!!! HELP!!!! (10/29/2010 7:32:36 AM)

OK, I'm not sure what's up with this stoopid machine, but if anyone can give me a clue, it would be appreciated!  When it comes to these things, I don't know the difference between a gigbyte and an overbite! [:)]

It had been acting up, locking up, freezing up and taking forever to load things if I had several different windows open, one of them being my Corel Word perfect.  Now, whenever I close ONE window, ALL of the windows close.  I can't seem to reset my computer using a restore point, I've run every virus program I can think of.  One person said it might be a worm...what is it and how can I get rid of it without having to buy virus programs?  I do have all of my original disks that came with the computer, so if wiping the hard drive is an option, I can do that.

you may be really short of memory.

go into the add/remove programs and blast out any applications you dont use.
cleanup!  (stevenjgould.org)  fuck demo mode, run it real.
dump all your fucking virus and firewall bullshit and get
comodo internet.
get glary utilities

all these are free.  run em.

DarkSteven -> RE: Calling all computer geeks!!! HELP!!!! (10/29/2010 7:36:44 AM)

I suggest cleaning up the hard drive.

1. Get spybot or Lavasoft's Ad Aware. They're both free.  Use them to clean malware off your puter, which is NOT viruses.
2. Run the Disk Clean and then Defrag.

better try an online scanner...if nothing is discovered...you might try a clean install

If all else fails, and your hard disk is packed tight, I'd get an external hard disk (for about £50) and dump loads of your old files on it.

There are quite a few free virus scanners available..here is one I have used often.
http://malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

What I do that seems to alleviate alot of the slow loading process is use the New Tab feature
which is available in IE7 or 8. (See that little blueish box up top next to your web address?)
This will allow you to search any other internet site without having to open another instance
of Internet Explorer. It can also be modified so you are warned when one page or all pages are
closing. I have included an image of how I have mine set up, if you would like to use that as a guide.

poise -> RE: Calling all computer geeks!!! HELP!!!! (10/29/2010 1:25:34 PM)

It would help if I included the image huh? [:-]

You mentioned Corel Word Perfect. Do you have the install disc? It might be worth trying a repair install to fix any broken registry entries or files.

You didn't say what operating system you are running. I'm assuming Windoze, but Windoze what? Do you have the original installation disc? It might be worth trying the System File Checker to replace any damaged OS files.

PS Malwarebytes, as suggested by poise, is truly excellent.

soul2share -> RE: Calling all computer geeks!!! HELP!!!! (10/29/2010 1:46:34 PM)

poise, I'm set up just like your screenshot.  I ran the one link from TD, it showed no problems.  I'm trying the Ad-Aware one now.

Looking at the Processes in task manager, it has 7 processes labeled "svchost.exe"  I have one IE window with two tabs open, YIM running in the background.  Whenever our computers at one workplace would slow down, we'd go to the Task Manager and end certain processes....I think it was the one I have listed.....the user names are for system x3, network service x2, and local service x2.

My physical memory total is 784,384, available is flashing 207,xxx, system cache is 408,xxx, I have a 256K and 512K memory stick in for memory.

mnottertail -> RE: Calling all computer geeks!!! HELP!!!! (10/29/2010 1:48:36 PM)

yeah, I would go comodo internet and in the firewall shut down all incoming ports, sounds to me like you got watchers.......thats why all the svchosts.

Lucylastic -> RE: Calling all computer geeks!!! HELP!!!! (10/29/2010 1:51:15 PM)

sounds like you really need more RAM badly

DMFParadox -> RE: Calling all computer geeks!!! HELP!!!! (10/29/2010 1:54:16 PM)

Holy torvalds, WordPerfect?

That is some crap softwares theres. Get openoffice. Hell, get Microsoft Office. OneNote is Tha Bomb.

Every time I've tried out corel stuff it nuked my shit. Their wordy apps or their pictury apps. I don't bother with them anymore.

poise -> RE: Calling all computer geeks!!! HELP!!!! (10/29/2010 2:07:39 PM)

I would not worry too much about the 7 svchost files. Most are associated with Windows services.
If you are really curious about one that seems to be using alot of memory, you can see what is
associated with by doing the following. Click Start - Run and type in services.msc.
If you are confident you aren't needing that service you can then double click it to disable it.

Hows the virus scans coming along?

Tantriqu -> RE: Calling all computer geeks!!! HELP!!!! (10/29/2010 2:23:39 PM)

Word Perfect is literally outdated and can't keep up with the 21st century; it's also unstable and jam-packed with bugs, and messes up everything else you're working on. Give up, get Word. Gotta convince your coworkers, too.

If you haven't yet, empty out your Internet Temporary File.

Bonne chance!

soul2share -> RE: Calling all computer geeks!!! HELP!!!! (10/29/2010 3:16:15 PM)

I'm running the Ad-Aware scan now, so far, nothing.

Word Perfect is what came on the computer, and I really don't use it enough to upgrade.......the only reason I'm using it now is because of the job search......my resume and stuff is there to load.

I did delete some programs I thought I wasn't using.....took out my YIM, toolbars and yahoo.  What I find a bit odd is that no matter where I go in the calendar, I can't restore my computer.  It indicates that there is nothing to restore.  {sigh}  Looks like I'm headed for the Geek Squad place.

True, but you can scan the external hard drive with an antivirus, too.  Or scan your data folders before copying them onto it.  Both my father and a friend of mine have just bought EHDs for their (quite old) computers.  It's made a massive difference in their speeds.  Besides, they're good for backing up everything should you want to reinstall an operating system.

Reinstalling an OS feels like it's using a grenade to kill a canary, but when you add up the hours it takes to run a variety of antiviruses and antispies, it's sometimes the more efficient option.  Well, it's turned out that way for me at times, anyway.

System Restore is like that.  The common complaint is that it'll only restore when you don't need it to restore.
